Sony has been de facto king of JRPGs since the ps1, but I will say the ps3 was kind of meh in that category. Do you think the ps4 will improve and recapture the glory of the old days? Persona 5, Star Ocean 5, Disgaea 5, Ni No Kuni 2, is a great start to things. What do you think, SW? I personally think we will be in for a treat with this new Sony renaissance.

No, that would be the 3DS or Vita.

Assuming we are talking only of consoles? Yes, definitely.

@charizard1605: making what up? The first one was massively successful and a sequel has already been talked about. Namco Bandai produces tales games up the wazoo and you think they aren't going to make a sequel? Don't make me laugh!

The first one bombed in Japan, and sold 1.8 million copies worldwide if sales of the DS game are also considered, which themselves numbered in 600,000.

Secondly, Namco does not own Ni No Kuni, they just published it in the west. Level-5 owns the IP, and they already expressed their dismay at the game's failure, and have since moved on to far more successful ventures such as Youkai Watch, which is currently the most successful media property in Japan across any format.

Thirdly, the sequel has not been talked about by anyone except fans who understandably want to see more of it.

It's not happening, and you listing a game that wasn't even remotely officially mentioned in any capacity is sad, it's just you padding the list out, and undermines the credibility of your entire thread.

Oh, I forgot, the first Ni no Kuni was a collaboration between Level 5 and Studio Ghibli, and Studio Ghibli no longer exists.

That's a good start (even though Type 0 is trash)

FF XV is coming to Xbox One.

I don't wanna go there but Bloodborne has almost nothing of a traditional JRPG. I sure as hell wouldn't recommend it to a JRPG enthusiast.

Kingdom Hearts 3 is also coming to Xbox One

FF Type 0 is also coming to PC

Star Ocean 5 is trash but we'll leave it.

So basically fans of JRPG can get on PS4 and nothing else, Star Ocean 5, Persona 5, Disgaea and Ys8. Kinda underwhelming.

The question is not whether you can get those other games or not. The question is, if you are a JRPG fan, which of those systems would you buy? You buy an Xbox One, you miss out. You buy a Wii U, you miss out. You buy a PC, you definitely miss out. You buy a PS4, you get everything.

I guess so. I'd argue you'd miss out on Xenoblade Chronicles X if you don't own a Wii U but aside from that nothing. Dear god do JRPG's suck now. Used to be my favorite genre from the mid 90's to mid 2000's.

Between Persona 5, Xenoblade X, and Final Fantasy XV, I foresee a minor renaissance incoming.

Symphonia! I loved Symphonia. Abyss was okay, too, but Symphonia and Vesperia are my absolute favorites.

They are low quality, low selling niche games that have become largely irrelevant due to technological advancements.

Whereas I would have argued that is a good thing, since 1995 game design sensibilities are generally better than 2005 game design sensibilities, once again, I have to say: no.

These arguments held true last generation. This generation, they are no longer holding true.

Oh also, just wanted to point out, P5 is also on PS3.

I haven't played any JRPG this generation so I can't comment. We'll wait and see. I know the ones from last gen felt like SNES games with HD graphics. Almost none of those you listed is out anyway. Bloodborne plays almost exactly like Demon's Souls(combat, minimalist plot, premise) so it's still stuck in 2009.

played a bit of the symphonia collection earlier this year on PS3 and even their great games have aged poorly. the whole series is arguably crap now but the newer ones have some kickass combat systems at play if you're devoted enough to see all of its potential

Nah, Bloodborne is fairly different.

For FF15, we have the demo to go by, Persona 5, even if identical to P3 and P4, is already far ahead of most other games on the market, Type 0 was trash, yeah.

Yeah, I give mad props to the combat systems, it's a pity they're surrounded by such mediocre games though.

Except for Hearts R, there even the combat was mediocre.

For FF15, we have the demo to go by, Persona 5, even if identical to P3 and P4, is already far ahead of most other games on the market, Type 0 was trash, yeah.

No it's not. I played all Souls games and when I played Bloodborne on my friend's PS4(I recommended him to buy it), I felt right at home and breezed through the game as it felt awfully familiar. From the static faces with no lip-sync to the complete lack of exposure to the mechanics and enemy behavior, this game very much feels like a Souls game. It certainly hasn't accomplished anything that couldn't have been accomplished in 2009.

If we go by P4 we know Persona 5 will have awesome characters, plot and character development but lackluster mechanics and terrible dungeons. Again, nothing we've seen so far screams ''2015''. Everything shown feels like it could have been done 10 years ago.

ClaDun X2 happened, so yes.

I still blame NIS for why PC gamers had to burn their money on FFXIII to convince Square-Enix to bring Type-0 to Steam and why Rise of Incarnates is looking like a good excuse to keep Tales on consoles.

Ni No Kuni did very well in the West, especially considering it was a new IP for a niche genre.

Link to where they said it was a failure?

There have been rumors about a Ni No Kuni 2 for a while.

You saying it's not happening doesn't mean it's not happening.

Kinda doubtful though. PS4 will most likely be on top when it comes to JRPGs, which is fine since that's the primary reason I bought a PS4 to begin with.

Though I definitely need FFXV on PC.

All of the game the tc listed have a high chance of coming to PC.

I remember having to deal with morons who kept saying that type-0 wasn't happening. Oh

Legit question (not messing around for a change lol)- what do you think are the actual, serious odds of P5 coming over? Because Persona is the one series that I suspect might remain console exclusive for a while, but I wanna know what you think.

Dunno but it has won the "indie 500" two years in a row so who knows. :P
