I don't just mean at launch, I mean will a GTX 670/680 be able to keep up with 2015 games and beyond? Frankly I don't think my GTX 670 would age well into a consoles lifetime.

We don't know. We don't have next-gen specs beyond rumours. We have no idea the graphical fidelity that will come.

Furthermore, it's not a straight comparison, as you'll likely be looking at different resolutions.

In 2015, it'll obviously be outdated and dwarfed by new PC hardware, but I think it'll still be able to compete with console standards and pull off some medium settings in most games...

Are you an idiot? The cheapest ive seen a GTX 680 was £350. That probably costs more than the next gen consoles itself.

At console standards (720p and 30fps) sure. But i don't think you'll be getting the performance you want playing late next-generation games at 1080p+ and high settings.

Yeah, but your 580 still holds up rather well in most cases, and even when 700-series comes out, you'll still be able to play plenty of games at high settings, I'm sure...

Though I wonder, for how long will the tech keep improving so much, when will we reach the point where it starts being meaningless?

On the CPU side, we're already awfully close to it I'd say, most regular applications make very little use out of the more advanced mainstream chips like the 2600K, 3770K, and today, was just checking some rumored Haswell benchmarks, they pack very little improvement over 3770K, seems the biggest focus is on the IGP...

Intel is really taking to Nvidia/AMD with these built in IGP's. It saves people a lot of money when they can just use their CPU's to run HD movies and some low stress games. Given that Intel is looking to move away from socketed chips with its OEM stuff. In terms of actually performance, I reckon with the next line of consoles having proper CPU's with at least 4 cores, the games will scale a lot better. Currently, a 4 core is only really needed but maybe in two years, 8 to maybe even 16 core CPU's will actually make a positive impact on game performance verses the negative effect on your bank account.

Riiiiight.

If you're expecting next-gen consoles to be as beefy as those cards, expect a hefty price tag. (which will not happen)

If a gtx 680 is having a hard time with current gen console looking games then imagine what it will be like when there are next-gen looking console ports. Pc gamers are already complaining till this day of games like GTA IV.

Well, since Intel CPUs already do a good job at outperforming AMD offerings, guess it's not suprising they're focusing less on the actual CPU performance these days, and more on IGP, trying to give AMD a run for their money on that front as well...

But yeah, I wonder what sort of CPUs we'll be having next gen, how much will they affect our games, and will powerful 8+ cores start making their way into competent gaming PCs...

Nvidia GTX 660 and better will easily keep up, especially the GeForce Titan which is rumored to be more powerful than x2 SLI GTX 680's!

How is it 120fps if the game is running at 100fps? or did you just mean that your monitor is 120Hz

Oh I know, I normally get about 40-60FPS depending on the area. I could get more if I OC'd my CPU but I cant be bothered with doing that.
