Poll Which was the most powerful console last gen? (101 votes)

The PS3 was a bit more powerful than the 360 46%
They both had different strengths/weaknesses but ultimately they were about evenly matched 36%
The 360 was a bit more powerful than the PS3 19%

I know multiplats were generally better on the 360 especially early in the generation, probably because the PS3 was harder to develop for. The best way of comparing them is by judging from the best looking games on the respective console.

Some say the PS3 was more powerful, because of Uncharted 2/3, GOW, TLOU etc, they look good, though a few of the mentioned games had some minor frame rate issues and others say that the 360 was more powerful, often pointing at Halo 4 which also looks pretty good, maybe not as good as the best looking PS3 games but Halo 4 has more things going on at the same time than most games that generation with many NPCs on the screen and vehicles and smaller aircrafts involved in the battles as well.

And a lack of blu ray, and an intentionally faulty DVD drive that scratches discs.

For game development it's better but beyond that, the hardware is all around terrible.

The bluray was mostly a detriment to the system. See the long load times, increase price tag, and mandatory installs.

The "faulty" DVD drive was not intentional so much as penny pinching.

What's great about blu-ray is the discs never scratch unless you do it intentionally, and many 360 games ended up shipping on 2 discs. Ps3 load times maybe were bad at the very start on some multiplats, after that was pretty much even to the 360. I really wish lost odyssey was on Ps3 instead of the janky stacked package on 360. Not having blu ray wasn't a big issue for game development, but it's another reason PS3's hardware trumphs the dated and poorly made 360.

Yes, they intentionally made a faulty disc drive to save 50 cents, there's no excusing that and it's STILL not fixed.

both pretty much even...slight advantage to the PS3 under certain conditions but nothing to get excited about.

the 360 was a far smarter design though (on apaper at least....lets not mention the heat....or the quality of the disc drive :P). it was the gamecube of last gen in terms of clever hardware decisions (this gen the PS4 is the gamecube of hardware decisions).

i still remember the excitement when MLAA was revealed for GOW. this was the vcalidation fot eh cell..this was the super computer at work......except the 360s gpu could do the same thing...only faster.

considering the cost to manufacture of the PS3 it really was a massive BEEPup by sony. it was a trojan horse....sony sold gamers to try and get a foothold in other markets. thankfully it was a catastrophic mistake, sony got a bloody nose and have since learned from it. the PS4 is absolutely spot on.

People were flying space ships with ps3 consoles and not xbox 360 consoles. The answer is obvious.

What's next?

Probe was exploring Pluto with PS consoles and not N64 consoles. The answer is obvious?

Lol at people calling the 360 more powerfull then the PS3.

That's like saying a Fiat Panda is faster then a Honda s2000.

Yes it's faster , if the Honda is tied to a tree.

They were evenly match. PS3's RAM was so putrid you couldn't even have party chats outside of games. 256MB for system and another 256MB for video. That was pathetic.

It had probably a faster CPU much harder to code for but a weaker GPU. They had different strengths and weaknesses. Most multiplatform games shone on 360 but PS3 had exclusives that were really hard to beat if devs knew what they were doing with the hardware. Tie at most otherwise slight edge to the 360 for having a better and easier architecture.

There was no "probably" to it. It is/was a definite fact that the ps3 cpu trumped the 360 cpu. I'm almost to say that the cpu in the ps3 was more powerful over the cpu in the 360 than the 360 gpu over the ps3 gpu.

Xbox 360. All multiplatforms look better on the 360 than ps3. That should be your answer right there.

Being easier to develop for =/= More powerful. Plenty of devs stated that the ps3 had a bit more juice in it than the 360 when fully utilized, the problem was the costly finances and the extreme talent needed to fully utilize the ps3 vs the 360.

The 360 is all around the better designed piece of hardware outside of heating issues.

That was a big issue and for that reason it failed.

so did the ps2 fail because of the DRE issue that Sony never addressed?

Reading Comprehension isn't your friend.

He didn't mean that the 360 failed as a whole, but at being the better designed hardware. The ps2 was NOT the better design hardware wise in it's generation, but the 360 wasn't an overall failure.

To a certain degree, yeah. Not all conversation/topics in SW discussing specs have to have the PC present at all times.

I'm a bit surprised with the results, I haven't voted yet, viewed the thread using private browsing to see the results. I believed that most people thought that they were about evenly matched.

The PS3, but because the shortcuts done with the memory setup and GPU, it was hard to utilize. If it had had one more CPU core and unified memory alot of bottlenecks could have been avoided.

They were both pretty much the same, the differences were negligible.

Yeah , that's why LA Noire was on 3 discs.

While mems claim is pretty ludicrous in its own right, your lacking understanding of the difference between DVD and Blu Ray makes your statement so fundamentally incorrect it makes my brain hurt.

The PS3 was just a tad more powerful than the Xbox 360. But the Cell processor was awful to program for. So most multiplatform games were created on Xbox 360 first then ported to PS3. Overall the PS3 and Xbox 360 were mostly even in power. The PS3 had a sleight edge in processing power that was rarely showcased since the Cell processor was hard to work with. But when developers could make games really shine on the PS3. The power difference could be noticed. Overall Xbox and PS3 were almost the same. With each systems having advantages.

Each system sold 84 million systems with PS3 having a tiny lead over Xbox 360. PS3 84.4 million sold VS Xbox 360 84.3 million sold. The difference in processing power was similar. With PS3 holding a small edge over Xbox one. But nothing really to get excited over.

I have both Systems and enjoy them both. Still do as they crawl towards 90 million in lifetime sales. Overall last generation was a draw between PS3 and Xbox one. Both in sales and "power" technically the Wii won with 101.2 million in sales. But the Xbox one and PS3 are still being sold and having a few new games in 2015. While the Wii is long dead, off the market and no new games for quite a while.

So PS3 and Xbox 360 are still active in 2015, if just barely.

This isn't a debate, the PlayStation 3 was more powerful and produced better looking first party games than anything the 360 was capable of. However because of its complex nature and the simplicity of the 360, multi-platform games ended up looking and running better on the 360 due to developers not getting in depth with convoluted coding required for the PS3.

In the end it all ended up looking about the same so the middle would be more accurate, the PlayStation 3 was more powerful but for most applications that didn't matter.

the papers were all sony bullshit and technical details about a CPU that noone could really benchmark or compare, the games showed the real winner,
