What's your favorite JRPG franchise at the moment?

Mine is between Final Fantasy and Persona. Final Fantasy 7 Remake was a great revival of the franchise and I look forward to part 2! I'm also excited for the PS5 console exclusive, Final Fantasy 16. I think we'll be getting more news on that this year. And then there's Persona. Persona 5 was a landmark game for JRPGs. It showed us what a traditional turn based JRPG can be like in the modern era. Though not perfect (drags at certain points), I think the next one will be amazing! I'm also looking forward to Persona 4 Arena Ultimax coming this March! Other JRPGs that I'm starting to really like are Tales of Arise and Shin Megami V. Oh, and Dragon Quest 11S was amazing! First time playing Dragon Quest.

Ever Since Xenogears on Playstation 1, it has always been Xeno games. Xenogears, Xeno Saga 1-3, Xenoblade Chronicles X,1,2, and Torna the Golden Country all really speak to me. In my opinion Xenogears on Ps1 is so much better than Final Fantasy 7. It is not even close for me. I am very much hoping for Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and X2 someday!

Hmmmm, for current franchises it would probably be Persona, Dragon Quest, or Final Fantasy.

I will say that Tales and Trails are close though.

Monster Hunter

probably persona right now, but the funny thing is i've enjoyed jrpg games most on nintendo consoles than anywhere else. Fire emblem, advance wars, golden sun 1 and 2, chrono trigger are all fantastic games. I've enjoyed playing these games more than any jrpg game to date.

SMTV is also great, but ive been getting super annoyed with it recently because of its stupid game save mechanics.

Honestly ... none.

FFVII Remake is one of the best JRPGs in the last few years, but as a franchise, they are still a hit and miss.

So many JRPG franchises that I love that I always feel bad for putting any one over another. Anyway my top five would be:

1. Chrono Trigger/Cross

2 Final Fantasy

3. Dragon Quest

4. Xenosaga/Xenoblade

5. Tales of

If monster hunter counts then monster hunter. it probably does count. i don't think i have played a monster hunter game i didn't like (though Monster hunter stories is close).

Other than that: Xenoblade. 2 was a dud But 1, X and the 2 expansions ranged from good to absolutely fantastic. So, despite, the last mishap, i am still really looking forward to see what Monolithsoft has next (hope its a Xenoblade X2).

Always an interesting question when it gets brought up. I get the Soulsborne genre wasn't around when the term 'JRPG' was coined. But I guess it counts?

Still have my PS1 copy of Xenogears! Such a classic. Have not played the Xenosaga games, but have played Chronicles 1 & 2. Want to play X on the Switch! Hopefully that happens. Didn't get to Torna.

This guy have really good taste; I would love to say the same, but have to say Persona, although my favorite game of all time still is the original Valkyria Chronicles.

For still active franchises I'd say Dragon Quest and Valkyria Chronicles as well. Historically it would be Phantasy Star (I haven't played and all not much interested in the new ftp pso - although maybe I'm missing out) and Chrono Trigger/Cross

If I can ever bring myself to finish P4G and try P5 the persona series is on my list... For some reason I loved p4g and yet after getting past the false ending I was just exhausted and honestly a bit bummed I hasn't beat it

I thought that most Switch owners also own other systems. Also, the Switch has alot of quality JRPGs, whether they are original titles or remakes of older titles.

If it is a RPG developed by a Japanese developer, it is a JRPG. Valkyria Chronicles, unlike most JRPGs, is a strategic turn-based JRPG series like Fire Emblem.

@robbie23: you know nintendo as a company is always wasting precious IP. The way they wasted away golden sun is tragic. If they supported the franchise over the years, it would have been one of the best jrpgs right now. Golden sun 1 and 2 were that good, and a version for the switch would have been amazing.

It's a shame that golden sun has to be locked up as a nintendo first party. It would have been better off going 3rd party.

This is one reason im glad Capcom went back on nintendos exclusivity rights for RE4. Otherwise that game would also have been buried on the gamecube

@mojito1988: xenogears is the most underrated jrpg of all time. I have never played an JRPG that came close to how good the story, ost and characters even though the game is unfinished and felt rushed.

Persona. And it is solely because of the brilliant Persona 5, which is the only Persona game I have ever played.

Excluding stuff that shouldn't count, such as Zelda, Dark Souls or Monster Hunter, it's probably Dragon Quest for me.

JRPG (the type of JRPG I'm talking about) is a genre that sucks total ass about 98% of the time. DQXI was tolerable, even fun at times. Which is why I'm going with DQ.

@SolidGame_basic: not at launch no. I will get very addicted when I play Soulslike games. Always trying to Platinum them and play the next soon as I can so I am avoiding both it and Elden Ring for now. Waiting for the Goty edition of both before jumping in.

Barely played them, but generally universally enjoy Nihon Falcom.

The Legend of Heroes is great, but they tend to natter too much, so YS is tops for me as it gets right down to bussiness.

Even the original YS games I/II be it the OG's or remakes hold up well.

JRPGs are the most fun when you are not playing them.😊

Legend of Heroes, great turn based RPG's from the Sky Trilogy and the Crossbell games to the Cold Steel series, constantly evolving and connected universe and improving gameplay with every arc.

Much better than Persona and Final Fantasy in every way imaginable IMO.

If souls games count, then that by a large margin. If not..FF I guess.

Persona series is garbage.

Right now the two that crossed my mind immediately is Kingdom Hearts and Persona. It definitely is more, but those are the two I have been more invested in in the past few years.

How is the Phantasy Star series in comparison to the Online/MMO games that came out in modern time? I've been wanting to play the earlier game but hesitate to.
