Poll What's the best Metal Gear game? (107 votes)

Metal Gear Solid 30%
Metal Gear Solid 2 15%
Metal Gear Solid 3 46%
Metal Gear Solid 4 12%
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker 7%
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes 3%
Metal Gear (MSX) 1%
Metal Gear 2 (MSX) 2%
Metal Gear Rising: Revengance 7%
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops 1%

(only including canon games, sorry Acid fans--all two of you :^))

MGS5: The Phantom Pain is already confirmed GOTY 2015 and best game in our lifetimes. But what's the best released Metal Gear game?

The correct answer is MGS2. Best gameplay, best story, best characters, best Raiden.

Subsistence. Though I get the argument for Substance (MGS2), but The Phantom Pain shall be beast.

Revengeance is the best kind of canon. It treats the metal gear lore with exactly the kind of respect it deserves, none what so ever.

Definitely MGS3. Was already a huge MGS fan, but that game absolutely blew me away. Best ending cutscene of any game ever IMO. Hell, that whole ending portion is just fucking incredible.

MGS1 will always be tops. loved the adventure. Great cast and great bosses with background explained for each which made them even more interesting. Final battle was just awesome. I would maybe give twin snakes the upper since it gave an already great game a nice spit shine but the slow mo matrix got just to overused and killed alot of stuff for me.

If I had to be limited to a "Solid" entry, then MGS3. Amazing game, great bosses, one of the best endings ever, and it works as a story on it's own, because it didn't have to deal with the rest of the convoluted bullshit that is Metal Gear cannon.

But really, we all know the real answer is Revengence. Based on the bosses alone, that game is fantastic. Throw in the combat, music, environments and visual flair, it's GOTG contender.

People who don't vote for Sons of Liberty are probably too young to have played this game in its time to see the revolution it created in video games.
In my opinion Sons of Liberty along with Oblivion, Bioshock and The Last of Us are the most glorious moments of video games.

Too bad MGS5 will almost certainly fail.

MGS2 = MGS3. Can't stick to which one I think is best, depends on the day. Both awesome games for polar opposite reasons.

Ground Zeroes has the best gameplay though and TPP will soon take that crown.

I loved MGS2 Sons of Liberty. It was an amazing masterpiece. It was RIDICULOUS what that game was doing on PS2 hardware back in Nov 2001. That was a great year. We got a lot of fantastic games that year like GTA3, FFX, and MGS2 and the release of the GC and Xbox as well.

I had MGS2 reserved and waited in a long line to get my copy. Hell, I bought Zone of the Enders just for the included MGS2 demo six months prior.

MGS4 is the best game in the series so far. However, when you factor in story and pacing I'm really not sure. MGS3 is probably the most solid, overall experience.

...Some of my favorite moments are in the first and second games though. MGS has a tone which makes it stand out--everything from the music to sound effects--if I remember correctly it was done all custom. In a few ways I still think it is the best one.

MGS 2 really did a good job showing snake from an outside perspective.

MGS1 was the only entry with a decent story, MGS3 was the most fun with gameplay and just overall buzz in mind (and MGS4 should get a mention for having more fan-service than anything else I have ever experienced). I think I prefer the first, exploring shadow moses was the highpoint of the series for me.

I really like Matthewmatosis's review of MGS2. MGS2's lasting legacy isn't really its excellence in technology, graphics, or gameplay: it's how it messed with players. It's almost presumptuous to call the game prophetic, but MGS2 has such a forward-thinking narrative that was way ahead of its time and only really resonates today. Like Matthewmatosis says near the end of the review, Kojima could have easily followed up MGS1 with another game featuring Solid Snake infiltrating a base and taking out terrorists--and for any other developer, that would have been the logical choice for such a massively-anticipated game. But what sets Kojima apart from the rest of the industry is his willingness to take risks and innovate. That entire revelation with "Colonel" and the Patriots was mindblowing stuff, and it ranks as one of my absolute favorite video game moments of all time.

That's why I like MGS2 a lot more than the other games. MGS1 and 3 are amazing, and 4 is good at delivering fanservice, but they play it a lot safer. MGS2 is just such an interesting, brilliant game.

I don't listen to and follow modern reviews of classic games (To be honest, I find errors in modern reviews of classics, misplaced context, and usually know more about many of these games than the reviewer), but rest assured I know lots and lots about MGS. It's an amazing series. What you posted regarding Kojima's decision to not play it safe with regards to MGS2 I've said as much back in 2001-2002 when the game was hotness. So many fun debates and discussions with RL peeps back then. I've said in other posts in the past here as well. My fave MGS rotates as I don't actually have a favorite, but rather I enjoyed all of them for various reasons. It's hard to relay a lot of very specific Kojima-tales and what I admire about the man's work to the common folk/proles of SW without select anti-Kojima trolls buzzing about...but even the trolls and kids have a harder time arguing with the tech at the time which is why I mentioned the amazing tech. I can't say I disagree with anything you posted though.

I'm sure that 2013 Matthew review is a good review if he touched on those points. I might check it out sometime. I appreciate the link. :)

That MGS2 trailer was AMAZING. Some anti MGS/PS2 gamers were saying the MGS2 trailer wasn't real time and faked...it was glorious! :P
