As with all my NX speculation threads, assume the following:

  • The NX home console is at PS4.8 level of hardware power
  • The NX home console comes with a reasonably 'normal' controller, with Nintendo not overboard with gimmicks
  • The NX home console will get third party support and multiplatform games
  • The NX home console will come with a reasonable online network- whether or not there is a paid option, it will have all the standard options that an online network should have in this day and age

Okay, given all of this- how much would you be willing to pay for the Nintendo NX at launch? Is the price non negotiable? Would it go up or down based on other factors, such as online games, specific games being available, power being more, etc?

Personally, I think the ideal price for a console as described above should retail for $349- it's a good price, just a little above the Xbox One and the PS4 (which is also reflected in its hardware power- a PS4.8 should be one and a half times stronger than a PS4, and almost twice as strong as an Xbox One). For a system that was actually 'proper,' that would be a price I would be gladly willing to pay.

Higher than that, and Nintendo is committing financial suicide. Nobody will pay that much for a Nintendo system.

The PS4 isn't exactly a powerhouse. Releasing .8 better isn't enough to get excited about.

I'd pay $49.95, tops.

$300-$350 would be the sweet spot.

I'd consider $400 if the console's games and features are appealing, but I would not pay more than that.

Why's it Ps4.8 if it's only 50% stronger? Do you make the names for kingdom hearts lol

PS4.8? It won't be that IMO. So the entire assumption is flawed.

I'm guessing it will be more like a PS4.2. Where's it is SLIGHTLY better than current gen in some way, but maybe not in a particularly noticeable way. 4.8 implies that it is almost a next gen caliber system, and frankly I don't see Nintendo doing that. I would love to be wrong though. I could definitely see $349 for a PS4.2 type system, and that might even give them some cost leeway for a controller gimmick.

Now if they actually did a system that was almost a gen ahead of the PS4, and launched it at $349 I'm pretty sure people would be lining out the door for that. I know I would. Though it's tough to predict what the "casual masses" will do.

All I meant to say is that it's a half step over the PS4, but below a potential PS5 lol

Well, you can change the assumption, and then talk about what you would want to pay.

As for the casual masses, I think they follow the marketing- like they did with the DS, 3DS, and Wii, Nintendo would have to nail the marketing of this thing if they hope to sell it to casual audiences.

@charizard1605: I don't think Nintendo can capture the "casual" market again, not like it did with the Wii. Motion controls aren't special anymore and Apple owns all the casual gamers with extra money to burn. I think the only way they they capture that casual audience is if they release tools that allow developers to create mobile versions of NX games (or at least mobile apps that integrate with NX titles in some new and meaningful way). And even then, I don't see it being a success.

I think Nintendo is in a very tough spot and I truly do not know how they'll successfully navigate their way back into the spotlight as a leader in the industry.

@musicalmac: By 'casual' audience, I don't mean Wii casual as much as I mean the PS4 and Xbox 360 casual audience- the mainstream gamers who maybe buy Madden and Call of Duty every year, and that's all that they own a console for.

Nintendo consoles are the last things that come to mind when I imagine Madden and CoD gamers. Or maybe I misunderstand what you're saying.

You're understanding me correctly, though perhaps still misunderstanding my point. My point is that this bridge in association between a Nintendo console and the CoD and Madden gamers is exactly what Nintendo needs to correct with the NX- the bulk of the gaming audience is of this disengaged, mainstream, casual kind. They need to be catered to, or the NX will have a natural cap to the max install base that it can reach.

$499. Not just because of the power out of the box. It is also because NX is future proofed. Once they get the add on box that includes extra processors and memory, they can pretty much go toe to toe with PS4/Xbox 2.

If it is as powerful as the PS4, $299.00 If it is weaker than the PS4, $199-249 depending on actual power. If it is more powerful than the PS4, $349.99. These are the sweet spots and any higher when the competition has established libraries could be an issue.

Instead, i'm going to realistically assume it's the same under-powered POS that Nintendo usually tries to trick parents into thinking their kids want, with a laptop for a controller and an online system that rivals the Sega Dreamcasts. In which case, they'd have to pay me $5 to go through the effort of finding space in my entertainment unit for it.

I say it can be done at $299. Im sure Sony and Xbox One can already release cheaper $199 versions already. Nintendo should be ready, they can easily cut prices this gen.

This.

If it's better tech than PS4, with all the 3rd party support, then that would be too superb of a price to pass up.

NX cannot be the most expensive console on the market, irrespective of it being more capable than its competition.

$300 tops.

If Nintendo can hit the sweet spot for $250.00 for the Nintendo NX "Core System" The NX console and 1 controller. Or $350.00 With the NX system and 2 controllers and a pack in game. The legend of Zelda game that will debut on Both NX and a striped down version for the Wii U. should be the pack in game for the NX

NX should be a least equal to PS4 and Xbox one. If Nintendo can even double the power of PS4 to somewhat future proof the Nintendo NX. That would be great, But since this is Nintendo I'd expect them to just match Xbox one.

Nintendo has to hit the sweet spot for the price point on NX, if the can get it to $279.99 - $299.99 they should do alright.

$350 is kinda the sweet spot (CAD), but i'd pay $400 if it were a more than capable machine, with a solid online infrastructure.

$299.99 at most. Nintendo can't get away with a higher price tag, especially if the console lacks strong third party support.

I understand it is a new console but at this point PS4 and Xbox are getting price cuts and bundle deals so if Nintendo is looking to compete properly than they shouldn't be looking higher than $299

$299.99.. but even then I don't believe it will matter. By that time the PS4/XBO will be $199/250 and with MUCH better libraries to boot. Nintendo is better off letting the WiiU ride it out until 2017, when people are "buzzing" about the PS5/XB4.

No offense, but do you want Nintendo to further dig their own grave? A $500 Nintendo console would flop harder than the Wii U.

It will if it doesn't have access to all third party and isn't significantly more powerful than current gen. You do not release a $500 console and rely on gimmicks to sell it. It needs to be a console that renders current gen irrelevant (not hard to do knowing how much of a hard time current gen has with games nowdays), have access to Nintendo's exclusives and finally get all the third party. I feel like they need to go all in this time around and get every god damn third party. Enough of the shit "Nintendo isn't about 3rd party" or "if you're into 3rd party, you should look elsewhere". Seriously enough with this shit, we've been hearing this for how many decades now? First, they need to at least try to get the third party (not 1-2y old games re-released on their brand new console like the WiiU had for the first six months) and by "try" i mean it, not the shit we had with all their previous consoles.

There's so much potential when it comes to a Nintendo home console but they've been fucking failing since GC. If you get the horsepower, good price ($500 isn't too much for a true next gen system. In fact i'd argue its the perfect price for a console on a 5-6y cycle), Nintendo's exclusives AND all third party, wtf is the point of having an Xbone or even considering getting Xbone 2 or whatever it'll be called?

But naaah that's me dreaming, Nintendo is too fucking stupid and will rely on stupid gimmicks AGAIN.

Depends how powerful it is. If the sweet spot price is announced when they reveal it you'll know it.

Even if the NX had strong third party support a $500 price tag would hurt that console big time. The NX can still be more powerful than the PS4 without being too expensive.

Its doubtful Nintendo checks off more then 2 of those 4 possibilities.

Doesnt really matter because the only one Im interested in is how powerful it is. If its 50% more powerful then the PS4 and launches at $399 or under with a 1080p open world Mario game, then Day 1.

$500 powerhouse. A 9th gen console in 2016. Or the laughable road which is $300 ps4 level console released three years too late.

Even if the NX had strong third party support a $500 price tag would hurt that console big time. The NX can still be more powerful than the PS4 without being too expensive.

being more powerful than a ps4 isn't saying much. Now how its gonna fair against a ps5/xbone 2? If its only a little bit more powerful than current gen, it won't receive any multiplats when next sony/ms console comes out. Being stuck between two gens like the WiiU is the worst mistake Nintendo can do.
