Hello system warriors,

So i was thinking because im a Big FPS guy. FPS is heart and soul of my life and my life cant complete without FPS games. but then i see horde of military war games. and i never understand the apeal of them i think they are extremely boring and uninspired. especially compare to Real FPS like Half life or Doom. they dont have any creativity. not to mention forgettable protagonist american hero overcome the odd.

Non military shooter either they are half life, doom, quake, stalker etc have tons of variety and creavity. science fiction fast paced unrealistic shooters are always lot of fun. I just cant stand psedo realistic shooters.

what is so brilliant about military army games? compare to old school hardcore shooters.

Regards

I liked Doom. I liked Quake. I also liked Duke Nukem 3D. I liked Half Life...meh. You can toss Stalker out the window. Stalker isn't fast-paced. It still feels like a military FPS to me except I'm shooting mutants/monsters. Take Metro with you while you're at it.

Military shooters have been getting stale for a long time. They used to be fun, back when bf1942 was popping off. Thankfully we have UT4 incoming .

Stalker is more of a survival game. Not for people who want to just run and gun.

That's a fairly ignorant comment. But I get it, its always fun to make blanket statements about something you know nothing about.

Half life's protaganist is an american physist hero that does fight the military, Doom 3's was a marine. Well I know why I preferred MOH (modernwarfare) over COD of those respective years and a few buddies in the army did also. Because firing the M4 in that game sounded and had the 'feel' of the M4 we fired. It had a satisfying gunplay to it.

Now as for whats the draw to them? People like to feel badass without having to risk anything. You said so yourself in another thread you want to feel like a badass. Would you really be one if demons or headless farting, three legged buldogs invaded our plane of existence? Who cares you get to pretend with no consequences. And some people prefer to pretend they are doing the very things that Soldiers are asked to do, albeit these games are far from realistic, but the equipment, some settings are. And people get to feel like a badass, spec ops soldier without even having to deal with basic training. Its entertainment.

Top kek SNIPER

As Freeman tries to make his way out of the ruined facility, he soon discovers that he is caught between two sides: the hostile aliens and the Hazardous Environment Combat Unit, a U.S. Marine Corps special operations unit dispatched to cover up the incident by eliminating the organisms, as well as Dr. Freeman and the other surviving Black Mesa personnel to keep them from talking

Freeman fights the Marines before reaching the surface of Black Mesa, where he learns that scientists from the Lambda Complex may have the means to resolve the problems created by the cascade. Gordon travels to the other end of the facility to assist them.[20] However, Gordon encounters several hurdles throughout the facility, such as reactivating a rocket engine test facility to destroy a giant creature of three tentacles,[21] using an aged railway system in order to get to and launch a crucial satellite rocket,[22] and fighting a group of Black Ops soldiers,[23] before he is captured by Marines and dumped in a garbage compactor. Gordon escapes and makes his way to an older part of the facility where he discovers an extensive collection of specimens collected from Xen, long before the resonance cascade.[24]

I don't think we disagree that the people who committed these atrocities had mental issues, but the question still stands: "What is the appeal of simulating the gruesome killing of another human being, especially in a war setting where is happens so frequently?" If simulating shooting someone in the head with a sniper rifle, or bowing off limbs, etc is "fun", why not games where you simulate the abortion of fetuses, or the murder and dismemberment of people, like a serial killer? There has to be a reason why many consider simulating the killing of a person one way is "acceptable", why other ways are not. I have no idea why anyone would ever want to even think about another human getting hurt like that, never mind actually simulating it and being gratified by it, especially in a war setting with war and killing being two of the most offensive things I can think of.

Those guys may have been insane, sane men did the killing.

I don't think Good people want to kill. I think sometimes our hands are forced.

Humans are the killing machines on this planet. It's in our DNA. The food chain dictates this fact.

This will never change. If a human is cornered or threatened, instinct takes over. Death is sometimes the only solution.

If your life was challenged you would kill in a heartbeat or you would die.

In America we live in a make believe society. Where people think this soil is not stained with the blood of millions of domestic or foreign men, woman, and children. They choose to wear blinders to the truth. The reality of it must be to hard? Everyday someone is dying to protect this false reality from the truth. America dumps billions into the Military a year, to protect this fairy tale society. To give people in our country the freedom to believe in this lie, that the killing that goes on everyday is not happening.

The fact of the matter is. Those billions of dollars in military are the only thing protecting us from the harsh reality of certain death or invasion.

You cannot spin history. It is the only truth of who we really are as a species. To deny that is a delusion.

In all honesty IDK. It seems to be big with the "dudebros" though.

I prefer my FPS experience to be more fantastical like in the far future.

I go by feel when playing these games. Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, and UT have that fast-paced feel that separates them from other FPS games. The rest, HL2, Stalker, Metro, BF, Crysis, KZ, all have a "slower" feel like the military FPS the TC mentioned. It's just a matter of the external cladding or theme.

Most FPs games are total crap though, because it always turns into a one man army Rambo game with regenerating health, which is fine if the game had something else to offer.

Mainly because they are fun. Military hardware is fun to use, fighting in imaginary war scenarios is fun to do, generally playing warfare on a computer is a lot more fun than waging it in real life.

Military shooters come in all forms and each has their own appeal. They have plenty of their own variety. Each series does something a bit different and combines its own unique gameplay elements. It's extremely ignorant to ignore that. Each series has its own way of doing things much like all of the series you mentioned. The only major difference is that there are a lot more military shooters lately as people who enjoy the series keep buying them. From game to game they are all very different just like any of the games you mentioned.

So when people say "oh great more military shooters" it's almost always in reference to the newest game in an established series. We would be saying "oh great, another arena shooter" if 2-3 arena shooter series had a game released each year. Market saturation based upon demand has made a lot of people not see the bigger picture. Sequels in a popular franchise release far more frequently than they used to and there are far more popular franchises out there across a larger variety of platforms.
