What games have a perfect harmony of gameplay and story telling?

I'm just wondering what games captured your heart, mind, and soul when you played it and has a perfect harmony of gameplay and story telling?

Not one. Gaming as a whole doesn't seem to understand you can tell a story without a cutscene.

EDIT: Actually, I'd have to concede that Portal accomplished this quite well, but one game doesn't prove much.

mgs 3, final fantasy 10, devil may cry 3, uncharted, persona 3.. meh alot of games for me actually

Nothing perfect, but Uncharted 2 was pretty darn close.

It brought you right into the cinematic action.

Half-Life changed that.

Recently, I'd say Uncharted 2. Had cutscenes, but the gameplay and the moment-to-moment story were seamless.

Sometimes it serves stories better to use cutscenes.

I'd say Uncharted or Half Life, maybe Mass Effect(I haven't played it yet but from what I've seen)

Not true. Although there are many problems with the plot of Heavy Rain, that game proved that gameplay and story can be interwoven seamlessly. Other examples I can think of are Metroid Prime 1, Portal, and Braid.

As for some older games I would have to say Castlevania Symphony of the Night and Final Fantasy X.

Your sig made me think of Left 4 Dead. That's a perfect harmony of gameplay and story because the moment you start playing you think "Oh, it's the zombie apocalypse and we're survivors." and that's pretty much the entire story. :P

Homeworld. Play it to find out. It may have come out 12 years ago, but it still beats most RTSs today in terms of gameplay.

Nothing really. I've played a hell of a lot of games too, but nothing in story telling in games has been what I would call superb.

[spoiler] that dude was some kind of shaman or something trying to avoid Wander to do what he did, kinda like some kind of guardian. That demon possesed Wander after the fool killed all the colossi and the shaman guy sealed him away inside Wander, who then became a horny baby. i feel that games with great story and great gameplay are mgs 4 and assasinss creed 2 and brotherhood (desmounds story for brotherhood) and probaly mass effect

Ah it seems we are destined to always disagree about that (MGS4 is soooo much better :P ). But in the end it is our love for MGS as a series that will always keep us remaining friends :D

Can't argue the Peace Walker comment as I haven't played it unfortunately, but I refuse to believe that a mere handheld title could ever come near MGS4!
