Poll What do you expect Nintendo to show at VGX? (41 votes)
Nintendo is confirmed to be making an appearance at VGX this year, their first time ever, and they are teasing something 'very special.' Given that this is VGX, which has an altogether different demographic than Nintendo's traditional audience, it's pretty interesting and potentially exciting what Nintendo might be teasing here. Will they actually be getting out of their comfort zone for the first time in a generation and a half to do something new?
What do you think they will be showing off?
SUPER SMASH BROS: This is basically the default fallback option. Smash appeals and sells to even those who traditionally dislike Nintendo, and its demographic overlaps almost entirely with those who watch VGX. It's one of the few 'cool' franchises they have, so showing it off at a big event like VGX would probably raise a lot more awareness and hype for the game and for the Wii U (remember, Smash has only been shown once so far, and that was at a Nintendo Direct). Add in a new character reveal and/or a release date, and this seems like a no brainer.
X: RPG reveals at VGX are actually fairly common: Skyrim, Dark Souls II, Mass Effect 3, all got their first reveals at VGX. X is a fairly interesting new IP from Nintendo and it looks distinctly un Nintendo. It also looks like the most next gen Wii U game yet. Revealed properly- with an emphasis on showing off the graphics, scale, combat, and open world, it could generate a lot of hype, and even put it in the spotlight (where new IPs, especially ones from Nintendo, otherwise have issues with that).
BAYONETTA 2: This one is a no brainer. Bayonetta 2 is the sequel to a widely popular Xbox 360/PS3 action game, and once again, its demographic is likelier to jive with VGX than traditional Nintendo properties. By showing it off, Nintendo generate awareness for the game and hype for the Wii U, and put it in the eyes of an audience that traditionally would not even consider it.
THE LEGEND OF ZELDA U: Zelda, when done right, is one of the few Nintendo franchises that still has an appeal with the VGX crowd- when done right means a console game with the realistic art style, as opposed to a handheld game, or the Wind Waker/Skyward Sword art style. Nintendo has had a trailer for Zelda U complete since before E3, and it was pulled from their E3, Gamescom, and TGS presentations at the last minute. Assuming this Zelda game is a modern, realistic looking, ambitious HD Zelda, now would be the best time to reveal it and generate some Twilight Princess-esque hype for the game and Wii U.
METROID/PRIME: Another obvious one. Metroid, especially Metroid Prime, is the rare Nintendo IP that appeals and caters entirely to western tastes. A Retro developed Metroid Prime(esque) game for the Wii U (imagine what they could do with the Wii U's power, and with their expert art style!) would generate a lot of interest and intrigue for the Wii U. Metroid hasn't had a game since 2010's disastrous Other M, so it's due a new entry- is now when they reveal it?
NEW WESTERN ORIENTED HARDCORE IP: We know Nintendo is working on several new IPs- is it possible they are trying to expand the base and appeal of their machines and brands by trying to develop a new IP that appeals to western tastes? And if so, wouldn't VGX be the time to reveal it? Is that what they are going to show off this year?
So which one of the above do you think it is? Or is it something else entirely?
