To Summerize Recent Events, if you were able to play Smash Before and you are able to play Smash Now you are pretty much SAFE. To be on the safe side it's probably a good idea to invest in one of the Nintendo Recommended HDDs for your system.

The Error Code 160-0103 is NOT EXCLUSIVE TO SMASH BROTHERS. It has been noted that this error has been around since the Launch of the WiiU. It's only now starting to show up more because more people have WiiUs than there were back at launch and more people are playing WiiU thanks to Smash Bros and Mario Kart 8.

The Systems that are Bricking are not exactly done by Smash Bros itself, but rather people trying to reformat the system on the request of Forum users or Nintendo Reps on the phone. The correct response is TO NOT REFORMAT YOUR SYSTEM AS THAT WILL BRICK YOUR CONSOLE.

From what I have gathered it is still not entirely sure if this error is cause by Firmware or Hardware due to faulty Flash Memory on the WiiU.

With that said it looks like WiiUs are still as safe as they can be, with the exception of those unlucky to have encountered Error 160-0103. :(

source: http://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/2o2ems/error_1600103_its_not_smash/

(Original OP)

http://www.gamnesia.com/news/new-smash-bros.-for-wii-u-error-can-leave-the-game-unplayable#.VH3KtckzDQo

You dun goofed Ninty, You should have built a stronger System.

So here's the gist of it.

There's Update Data for Smash that causes an Error on the System causing the System to Brick or Wipe all the Data from the console. So far it doesn't seem like it's a problem with the system itself because all other Games and Functions work perfectly, but for some reason Smash is the only game to give off Error 160-0103.

The Data Management Page on the WiiU ALSO gives off a different error code (160-1710).

If you do encounter this error and call Nintendo they will suggest you to Reformat your system or to send your system to them for repairs, But according to everyone who has encountered this error it's STRONGLY Recommended you DO NOT Format your System as that WILL Brick your console.

Nintendo is aware of the issue.

@Capitan_Kid: Yeah, Real shame, No true issues at launch and then Nintendo had to bring out an Update to mess everything up.

I think if you avoid For Glory mode you're good. A lot of people are saying that if you Play For Glory and then leave it's what triggers the error. But I don't know, just to be safe Offline for me.

That's very, very strange. I wonder why a game update would wreck the entire system. It has to be touching more than just the game.

Well the Data Management Page gives off an Error too so you may be right. However the errors only show up when you play Smash or go to the Data Management page, everything else from Miiverse, Internet, Eshop, or Bayonetta 2, Hyrule Warriors, etc seem perfectly fine.

Whatever Nintendo did with the update it messed EVERYTHING up.

There was an instance where a Wii U Update ruined Sonic and All-Stars Racing (but that's fixed). Bugs can be quite persistent.

I've known about this for a few days and I even spoke about it in other forums, but I was hoping the issue would die down.

It seems that even Nintendo is getting in on 2014: Year of the Buggy releases.

----

I wonder how many people are using the wrong kind of HDDs with their Wii U?

Nintendo has a list of Non-recommended Wii U HDDs and recommended HDDs. Some users have used the non-recommended HDDs/memory with little issue, but I wonder if this is THE game that finally catches up with those users?

I do wish the Wii U was stronger, that's for sure.

I don't think HDDs are the problem as those who are playing with a disc are encountering this issue as well.

@MarkAndExecute: Nintendo has actually released quite a few buggy games in the past couple years. Ones with game breaking bugs. Mario and Luigi Dream Team, Pokemon, and Skyward Sword come to mind

Makes me wonder if something went wrong with the patch installation. The patch itself doesn't install right and creates a bug in-game and Data Management is looking for something that isn't there. Whatever it is, Nintendo needs to get it fixed fast.

I spoke with the guy who uploaded the video a few days ago and he uses a non recommended USB flash drive, but it's just food for thought.

I hope it gets fixed soon, I have the game and I want to open it.

Tis unfortunate. Still, sounds like it is more an issue with an update than it is with the game itself, so Ninty DID ship the game out in top notch condition.

Good they get this out of the way now. I have had serious temptations to get a Wii-U mainly cause of Smash, but if I do end up getting one it unfortunately won't be for a while as I not made of money. Hell, this year will be expensive as hell game wise WITHOUT my having a whole other console to worry about...

Yeah and that apparently makes things a bit worse? I don't know it could actually be the culprit since I haven't heard of game breaking bugs on Smash until now.

@nintendoboy16: It's not, though My main gripe with WiiU is pretty much it's a "weak" console. Seriously they should have done better.

From what I've seen on forums, a main cause of this is shutting your WiiU off while still in Smash bros.

So edit it then shut it down

So again, what good would more powerful hardware do for something like BUGS or crap like this?

That's disappointing.

I always ass-umed Nintendo tested the hell out of their patches before releasing them. Unlike Sony.........

But in all fairness to Sony everytime people complain about the latest update bricking their PS3's I've yet to have a problem.

I heard that it's just not smash causing these issues, but multiple WiiU games and that the issue is not that big. It's probably a firmware issue or a issue related to the types of hardrives people are using in their wiiu's.

@nintendoboy16: The "Hardware Problem" is my own personal gripe that has NOTHING to do with this thread, but of just the WiiU in general. My small remark on this thread was just bait for people like you to get flustered up. Deal with it.

@super600: Oh snap, SolidTy was RIGHT on the money. Guess I gotta get an External soon, I'm using a 16gb USB.
