I thought so too at first, but it looks like it only affects steam's social functions, not actual games. At least, it said nothing about blocking in-game chat features etc.

I have a 10 year old steam account and it's public and i have never received one either.

I get spam bots every day.

It really depends on what you have in your inventory, not what you spent in terms of games. A friend of mine who doesnt have many games gets a crazy amount of Spam bots asking for requests. He has a Steam inventory worth a total of $200 of CS:GO skins alone and it's easily scammable compared to getting hands on your account. My inventory is probably worth about $30-40 with 366 games or so to my account.

People here are missing the big elephant in the room (because this place is not very smart), especially since I know plenty of you buy games from other outlets that add games to Steam. The only problem I'd have with this is whether or not this affects Steam games not purchased directly from Steam. I rarely buy my games directly through Steam anymore (as do many of you). So im wondering if games purchased through GMG, Humble Store, G2A, Steamworks Retail copies or even Gifts would count. According to my Account details (Settings > Account > Account Details). These entries show up as 'Complimentary', "Gift/Guest Pass" or Retail. I mean, it wont affect me, but I know it will affect a few friends of mine.

steam didn't want to do this but it will help battle the spam for them its not some kind of paywall scam its trying to help the gamers out

I've never had any either. Profile is private though and all the friends I do have are people I actually know.

Regardless of that I think this is a great idea. Will help with the issue that many people seem to experience and why even sign up if you aren't going to be spending money in the store.

That's not really a one time fee as mentioned in the title. They are just requiring people to buy something for $5 to show they are human, instead of a Spambot basically. I'm ok with that. How hard is it to spend $5 on Steam? Hell personally I think the limit should be higher. Make it a $20 minimum and just call it a preferred account. Then give people a badge....people love the Steam badges.....

Remember when you all saw that pay box on this very site? It was a yearly or quarterly thing, I really can't recall. Anyways, the site was great and nobody--myself included--understood that it was sort of necessary to sustain the staff and time investment. Now look at things.

@illmatic87: No, a Steam code from another Site does not lift this at all. You can not buy a Humble Bundle and redeem your code and get instant access to Steam Features.

It was like that in the past, but now you literally have to spend a minimum of $5 on the Steam store to access Basic Features on Steam.

Honestly that shouldn't be too big of a problem. Just got an account? Need to talk to friends? Got $5 to spend? Buy Don't Starve. It's like $5 right now. or you could browse the Sale section and you could probably rack up 2 or 3 games with just $5.

Is there something wrong with Valve expecting someone to buy an item from their shop before they get full and indefinite access to Steam's social features. The infrastructure likely has a fairly substantial overhead for a profit making company to just supply for free. There are over 125 million active Steam accounts now, that's a lot of people to manage, as well as a lot of bandwidth.

It's not like their trying to charge a monthly subscription, besides it's not going to stop anyone from playing a f2p game, using in game chat or making micro-transactions.

while there are a few legitimate users that will be affected by this they are far too few, on contrast this will help greatly the community of steam, and the vast majority who have spend at least $5 on it.

I get 1 at least once a week and sometimes several.
