So my PS4 has been very loud for the past few months. Luckily for me I am a member of other forums and am aware of a fix to a problem that a certain fanbase here has ignored. It turns out Sony cheeped out on the thermal paste on the PS4 and problems are starting to creep up. Here is a video that details the repair since launch PS4 owners are going to be without warranty.

Were you one of the people that bitched about needing a screw driver to change memory cards on the New 3DS? Are you intimidated by the HDD upgrade procedures for the PS4? Are you a Lem that relies on external drives to expand your storage? Are you a Cow that's afraid of building a PC? I'm sorry, I have some bad news. You are going to need some tools for this one......

For reference there is a 11 page thread on NeoGaf regarding the issue.

It's gotten pretty loud a few times, but 95% of the time, it's pretty quiet. Kind of a pain to tear down a PS4 for it.

Extended warranty here. :)

And so far, only Rocket League has made it loud.

@lundy86_4: My console had been loud during MGS GZ and Rocket League but started shutting itself down recently. The reason for the loud fans is CPU Temps. And the reason for the high temps? Shit thermal paste. And going by the word of folks that have already done the repair it's real bad.

@GoldenElementXL: I'm not surprised. Gotta bring down the price on these things. It sucks that yours has been shutting down... I've never had mine do that. At least we're out of the RROD days.

I have two (launch model and new Batman model) and they are both quiet.

I have a whole tube of Artic Thermal paste lying around so, I'll keep a listen for any increase in sound though.

That's usually coilwhine, you can fix it by replacing the fan.

Great for those lucky ones with silent PoS4s, still bad for us with loud as jet engine PoS4s, mine is loud since new out of the box and sometimes and some games make it louder, I do have to admit that it´s not as loud as my trusty old PS2 Fat, but it´s a bummer that you spend your hard earned cash in something that has been not quite a disappointment but getting close, the controller, or at least the one I got with it is also a dud, it has like 300 hours of use and it´s already broken, the left joystick is toast, and as usual, shit happens once the warranty is gone.

Launch consoles with the obvious exception of Nintendo have been of shit quality for 3 gens now.

My PS4 is doing it's best blow dryer impression lately at busy points and non-busy points alike. I doubt it will last the entirety of this gen.

Yes, my PS4 is super loud while under load. It is the loudest machine I own (from this generation). PC, Xbox One, and Wii U (when not disc reading) are super quiet in comparison.

I might change up the thermal paste when I start using my PS4 more often but for now, I barely use it so it is a non-issue.

I haven't turned on my PS4 since Axiom Verge came out. I'm not even sure where it's at, I boxed it up before moving in August and haven't seen it since lol.

I don't remember it being loud though, just puts out of a lot of heat. My PC tower though? That thing sounds like a jet taking off.

Huh, so this issue is simply down to cheap thermal paste wearing off from the sounds of it. Cool, that's an easy fix. Pop off a few screws, undo some ribbon cables and apply some decent paste (I keep Arctic Silver stuff on hand for PC stuff). When the warranty runs out I'll give this a try. Thanks for the heads up.

At a guess I'd say you have an AMD CPU/APU right? Infamously loud fan that comes with the stock heatsink. Does a poor job of cooling the chip too. Or maybe your on the Intel side and the pre-applied thermal paste is failing.

Either way I'd highly recommend getting some high quality thermal paste and an after-market CPU cooler for a total of around £30. Trust me, it will make a world of difference to your quality of life experience. Before doing this I never used my desktop. Hardly played games on it either. But now I play on it all the time.

lol thanks for the thoughtful response, but nah it's just my tower. I only roll with Intel/Nvidia, I don't roll with stock heat sinks and I do invest in quality thermal paste as it's so damn cheap so why not?

However, I have an Antec 1200 tower and it's been loud since day 1. And it's not just my build either, that's just how these towers are. 8 fans on the case alone will do that. Doesn't bother me though, it's a steady low pitched hum. I only notice it when I first boot up.

I have a i7 5960X overclocked with a Corsair H110i, 2 Superclocked Titan Blacks with 3 additional fans and my PS4 is currently louder than my PC. I hope to fix the problem on my main PS4 tomorrow. My "alternate" PS4 is packed away in storage and won't be available for repair until my house is finished. Judging by some of the pics I've seen I plan on doing the repair asap.

Some sample pics and messages from Gaf.

It's pretty loud by my standards, which is quite funny since it's louder than my PC that is vastly larger on the other side of the room. Then again, I use a Noctua NH-D15 for my CPU, and my desktop is SSD exclusive. Still, at the moment my PS4 is the loudest thing (even while idle) in my room.

Fortunately I usually play on my PS4 with a pair of sweet active noise cancelling headphones that actually cost more than the console itself.

Being the nice guy that I am, if my PS4 ever goes tits-up I'm sending it to you. No need to thank me, but I will take that DC club invite. :P

Haha consider it done.... I'll let you pay for postage and handling ;)

See I almost went that route, but decided £40 of fans and a few sheets of sound dampening, now it's barely audible in normal usage. Could go your route and get even better reduction but costs too much.

My PS4 isn't too bad, has been pretty quiet but the odd time it goes loud but I wouldn't say it's because the TP is wearing out.
