I prefer sonys solution prices will keep falling for storage on ps5. On xbox in 3 years that thing is still gonna cost $215 while in 3 years you might be able to find a tb drive for half the price. Maybe less than a $100.

This problem goes away if Sony releases their own branded drive with a heatsink, but to pretend that the consumers in general aren't uninformed is naive.

@Pedro: Yes both systems have a pitiful amount of on board storage. The PS5 at least allows a decent amount of expendable storage.

you can buy as many of the Xbox expansion cards as you want and hot swap them out if you are really in a need for more than 2 TB of storage space for the games you play all the time (which is more than enough IMO.. everything else can be put on an external drive and swap it onto the main drive when you want to play it)

Also they did say they would be coming out with other sizes other than 1tb for the Xbox

If only installing an internal hard drive can be as easy as plugging a thumb drive into a USB port. The same goes with installing a graphics or sound card into a PC.

I generally like the ability to fabricate my own solution (like Sony provided), but the price savings is not worth the hassle at least at this point. Sony took a gamble, but the M2 prices didn't drop low enough to have a big advantage.

That doesn't really mean much when they'll all be selling to the same number of devices / consoles.

M2 drives are being sold to laptops, desktops etc. and will benefit much more from economies of scale.

But is it benefiting the PS5 now?

Yes. There's already several compatible drives and the functionality is still in beta.

Manufacturers will just continue to make faster drives and lots of them will end up being compatible.

The price advantage isn't going to be immediate but, it'll fluctuate a lot more since it's a standard component. I'm sure you'll be able to get one on Black Friday etc. for a lot cheaper.

I have a lot more faith in the market vs Microsoft licensing their (Seagate's?) own solution.

Currently it is not benefiting in price despite the previous claims that the PS5 will offer cheaper alternatives. Manufacturers continuing to make faster drives also benefits any system that using the same tech but somehow it is only beneficial to the PS5? 🤔
