Sony recommends well-lit room, screwdriver and probably a flashlight to add PS5 SSD

So after all that it is more expensive than the expansion card.

UK: Xbox = £179 (Slow memory card)

UK: PS5: = £144 (random 4000/5000 speed SSD)

US must be vastly different on pricing, unless Sony are restricting all compatible SSD's to Seagate Firecuda 530.

The Xbox Expansion card is a custom high performance CFExpress card that matches the internal SSD in performance. Right now a good 128GB CFExpress card that is falf the speed cost more than the 1TB Expansion card.

So imo I think it was a good choice to have. It matches the internal SSD for speed, is much better value than other CFExpress cards and is very simple to install. Where as Sony has to worry about heat, power draw and people taking the console apart to install it.

So in retrospect I understand the choice MS made with this.

They should've made it easier, but installing an m.2 isn't really hard. As for the prices, yeah, high-speed gen4 m.2's are expensive... Mine cost $500 for a 2TB.

Corsair MP600. ~5000 read / ~4000 write. Not bad, by any means. For now, it houses my Windows shit as well as gaming... Probably gonna slap lower capacity in for the OS/programs.

And instantly the Series X/S storage card looks like a bargain in comparison (1TB for $219 vs 1TB for $275 U.S. prices) Plus you dont have to jump through tons of hoops to make sure it'll work: right physical size, right speed, does it have a heat sink that won't make it too thick, etc.

I don't have an issue with using a screw driver or a 12 step install. If that's too hard I'd recommend getting an Xbox for that plug and play and never purchasing a house/desk/grill or anything that requires maintenance. But I'm not paying that much for storage. I'm sure it's super fast and that's cool, but last gen I had a 4TB external and 1TB internal both full on my PS4 alone.. With game files getting even bigger, that doesn't look to be a fiscally reasonable expectation anymore.

Dear Lord

Sony "design" engineers designed this system with their head stuck up deep in their asses and Sony's top brass, with their heads stuck even more up their asses, approved it.

Not only you have install the stupid shit but also you have to install your own heat sink, how can this nonsense bullshit be ok ?

@pc_rocks: I actually have a history of upgrading my consoles to add functionality.

Genesis:

  • Sega CD
  • 32X

PS2:

  • Network adapter
  • 40GB HDD

GC:

  • Network adapter (LAN)
  • GBA player

PS4:

  • 1TB HDD internal upgrade
  • 4TB HDD external addition
  • PSVR (if this counts)

Upgrading the PS5's SSD will be easy.

Why do you need a firmware update to install an m.2 SSD? Shouldn't this be a day one feature.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to get one without a heatsink ps5 already hot, but Sony just took an L to MS with their storage solution I figured as much since when they announced this I was still in the process of waiting on pci 3 m.2’s to come down in price. On top of the fact that the ps5 doesn’t consistently load faster than the X and when it does the lead is not big enough to justify their decision.

I put a Samsung 980 Pro 1TB that I got on sale a month ago for $180 in my PS5. When I feel I need to up the storage on my XsX I’ll buy the proprietary drive for it, but it will end up costing me $40 more than I paid for the PS5. No big deal, but I’m not going to say MS did it better.

@pc_rocks: Exactly. Why would you do any of that anyway?

I mean you might want to at least update the drivers if you want games to display with fewer glitches and performance hitches. And you might want to update the anti-cheat software to allow you online. And you might also want to update the OS to avoid security issues. And then probably you'd want to update the games to make sure they resolve as much of the bugs that could prevent them from working on your hardware configuration. And you might also want to check forums if you're still having any issues running the game.

But I mean besides all that.

So just like consoles then. What was your point again?

Installing more storage is usually a bit more than plug and play. Still something a monkey should be able to pull off.

Are consoles still promoted as plug and play though? I've no idea, I don't watch ads.

For the Series systems and the Switch, it is plug and play. Storage installation should be that easy for all modern hardware as far as I am concerned but ease of installation tends to take a back seat For some companies. It is not the end of the world but it is more involved than it need be.

What do you mean? The amount of steps to go through is huge.

First, you have to make sure you're human, and that you've got two arms.
Then, you have to make sure your arms have hands.
Then, you have to make sure your hands have fingers.
Then, you have to make sure you can see. If it's too dark, you have to find/purchase a flashlight.
Then you need a table to put the console on.
Then, you have to find a store that sells the exact screwdriver you need.
Then, you have to..

Sony really screwed the pooch. No SSD upgrades for almost a year after launch. Then you have to open the console up to do the upgrade. Who's the idiot who designed this thing? MS one step ahead again. Now you can't even get Horizon this year? All these hyped up big Sony games pushed back to at least 2022. Sony keeps swinging...and missing.

Yeah, sure! I mean it isn't like People had trouble with Returnal and Housemarque themselves asked them to not play or it's not like countless games where PS5 was running PS4 version or the countless games where people had to use forums to figure out how to transfer their progress or it's definitely not a case that you have to have a day one patch or you have to update the firmware to play the game or get online or the latest hoops you have to go through to install the SSD or even how to change the stand.

I mean sure, none of that is true you didn't know about any of these. It's not like you weren't in each of the threads regarding those DC'ing like you're doing right now, RIGHT?
