Sony can't get it right with their protables can they (In the memory department anyway).

The Memory Stick Pro Duo prices were ridiculous when the PSP came out. I think 8 GB was $80 or something. So what the heck is Sony doing now?

They're still selling memory cards (Vita-exclusive ones at that) at prices that make getting anything above a 4GB unreasonable. The problem with it is though, these cards are small. About the size of an M2 or Micro SD. Both M2 and Micro SD are some of the cheapest cards available.

16 GB Memory Stick Pro Duo (Sandisk): $43.

16 GB M2 (Sandisk): $27.

So what is so special about these cards that makes a 4GB card almost the same price as a 16 GB M2?

I remember how expensive the PS2 memory cards were. Wasn't the 8MB one like $40 for a while?

They have to make money somehow though, right? They do sell their consoles at a loss after all.

My Advice, Don't get the Vita when it releases and wait sometime for them to fix all the issues ( systems always come with problems ) and get a latter version of it ( like they always do ) by that time there will be imitation cards that will be much cheaper.

Proprietary memory means that Sony can charge whatever they want for them and people have to buy them regardless. Basically, Sony gets more money this way.

It provides consistency as SD cards come in all different speeds, it provides security as they can't simply plug into a PC and let the pirating commence, they are also faster. Sure they are expensive but so were SSD's, M2's and Memory Stick Duo's, it's just the way things go when they are new.

There are advantages to proprietary media actually. Everyone can have the same speed so there is consistency. Who knows what speed Vita cards run at, could be high.

Anyways, yeah it's a rip off but the latest prices are well manageable.

Being proprietary, Sony can make more money. I don't really know what kind of memory stick tech it is but Im guessing its somewhat different than the ones already available. It also makes it safer because you won't be able to use the memory stick in any other device. If it was an SD card, it would be much easier to mess around with the device. Thats at least what Sony thinks.

I think they just pulled 50 off of the Vita price, and added 50 to the memory stick prices. The normal consumer will look at the Vita price not the memory sticks, and thus fall in their trap.

What I'm saying is, I think you're still paying for the Vita hardware when you buy the sticks.

Because Sony is greedy and wishes to learn their lesson here the hard way just like they did with their $600 PS3 launch price. I say let em. Maybe if they fall on their faces enough, they will get their heads out their ass and realize consumers aren't willing to allow themselves to be ripped off.

If by "we still buy it" you mean it has moved from a day 1 purchase to a Christmas of 2013 purchase. Then yes, I fit in that group.

Because Sony is greedy. Of course if MS did this, cows would be screaming about the "evil M$" but with daddy sony they'll rationalize it away.

2 reasons

1: Cards are more advanced/newer than SD cards.

2(big/main one):They are new proprietary cards that Sony the only maker of (aka they are the monopoly producer and charge what ever the hell they want)

You guys realise they have been doing this sense the ps1... right? Hell why the hell did they even make it so you can put a sd card into a psp? That would of killed piracy.. A lot of this does not really add up either way. Seems like an intelligent consumer will jsut go "umm but I have a sd card, I know they could of just let me use that." The funny part is people are JUST questioning this, yet console companies have been doing this sense you can save games 0_0. Meanwhile on the pc XD

Some of the few reasons are is that Sony sells the Vita at a loss and they want to recuperate as much as possible out of the accessories. Plus, it's a new proprietary card as well and they can price it how they see fit.

Just buy the largest one you can afford and move on with your life. I am getting the 32 gig card cause i plan on using my Vita a lot for everything it has to offer, so why play around? Its $99.00... it is expensive, but its only once and i am not going to cry about it.
