In case you somehow haven’t heard yet, the multiplayer online battle arena genre (or MOBA for short) is big business: What started years ago as the “Defense of the Ancients” player-versus-player map for Warcraft III has ballooned into a full-fledged real-time strategy genre where teams of professional players compete on a worldwide stage for millions in cash prizes.

Case in point: The upcoming Smite World Championship, unfolding at the Cobb Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, Georgia from January 9-11. Eight teams across five regions will compete for over $1.7 million dollars in cash – and lucky attendees will get their first crack at the game’s upcoming Xbox One version, which makes its first public appearance at the World Championship.

“MOBA is the world's most popular game genre, but it hasn’t been available on any next-gen console until Smite,” said Todd Harris, Chief Operating Officer of Smite developer Hi-Rez Studios. “Console was a fairly obvious opportunity, and Microsoft also saw the huge potential for a free-to-play MOBA on Xbox One.”

And if you’re wondering how an Xbox One adaptation of this traditionally PC-centric genre will feel once it migrates from keyboard to controller, you have nothing to worry about. “In terms of game control, some of the PC players already use a console controller, so the basics work well – but they are being further optimized for accessibility and comfort,” Harris explained. “Most of the development work has [revolved] around optimizing the user interface for an awesome living room experience.”

The pro community has nothing to worry about, either: Hi-Rez Studios plans on going big with the Xbox One version of Smite when it comes to the tournament scene. “There will be Xbox One tournaments,” Harris confirmed. “On PC, Smite is the fastest new game franchise to have an event with over $1 million in prizing. If our current momentum continues, Smite will be one of the top e-Sports for Xbox One.”

Indeed, Harris predicted, “Being on Xbox One will only further increase the pro community and viewer population.” We couldn’t agree more.

Smite doesn't have that big of a esport scene compared to other MOBA's. Dunno if it being on the xbone would help that much either.

Massive waste of money considering pretty much every competitive Smite player is on PC.

Should have just flushed the money into trying to make competitive Halo a thing to take seriously instead of it continuing to fail miserably. Those featured streams aren't free.

Cool , I don't know much about this game but I have seen it a few times on twitch and seems very popular on PC..,.,.i got my first taste of MOBA last year I think with that lord of the rings game(forgot the name) and it was fun, will definitely check this one out thanks

In all seriousness, to get huge on esports you need a massive following, like COD, Halo, LOL or Dota. I don't see this game getting the same results, but it could have a nice following.

yea, i'm sure you're right. i just think its a cool option to have for Xbox One and its users. to give them access at all to the eSports front. maybe some will actually try getting into it in a serious way.

besides its just nice that this gaming aspect -eSports- is being offered on a console finally. i'm sure some users will get into it...not sure if it will be a big thing on consoles though. either way, more gaming.

this is awesome news unless you're a playstation owner. in which case it sucks to be you. but in all seriousness, since the ps4 is outselling the xb1, why would hi-rez not want to push this to the ps4 first? After all, that's the bigger market right? thoughts anyone?

Smite is actually a pretty fun game if you're into MOBAs.

Problem is, most people who enjoy MOBAs play Dota 2 or League and are completely addicted and locked in to one game. I'd say about 10% of the people I know on my Steam friends list are big Dota 2 players, and that is all they ever play. Everyone else mixes it up, but not those Dota fiends.

consoles always riding off PC's coat tails. First fps, then wrpg, then openworld, then indy, then mmo, now moba.

When will it end? Stick w/ movie games rather than cheap imitations of big boy genres.

Other free to play games in the past especially on the 360 needed an xbox live subscription to play the games so the same may apply for SMITE.

I want cross platform matches to happen, controller vs kb+m. :(

The term E-Sport is so damn oxymoronic. It's a competition, not a sport. My little tangental rant aside, I do enjoy SMITE on PC and I always thought that it would make a great console game. Dunno how the console version will do on the professional scene, but I imagine it would be a lot of fun just for the average gamer. Hope it comes to PS4 at some point in time. Yeah, sure I play it on PC, but would love to give it a go on consoles too.

It's a really fun game and it's nice to see a console finally getting a proper moba.

Unfortunately, this is as far as it goes I think. Smite's third-person viewpoint allows it to be played with the WASD keys which transfers over well enough onto a controller. I don't know if we'll ever see a moba on consoles with an isometric view that has the depth or finesse of Dota or LoL.

Regardless, lems should enjoy this. Just remember that once you get hooked there are other games that exist out there. Don't let a year go by and realize you haven't played a singleplayer game at all.
