Shenmue 3 Kickstarter Hinting At Xbox One Stretch Goal

Shenmue's 3 console exclusivity on PS4 looks ever more uncertain today after Ys Net updated its Kickstarter FAQ.

The answer to the question about additional platform versions now reads: "Currently we are planning development only for PC (Windows) and PS4. Other platforms have not been decided yet. If other platform versions were added as rewards, an announcement would be made on the update page."

This suggests that an Xbox One version could be added as a stretch goal reward.

The FAQ also made the same comment in relation to a physical PS4 version - "If a physical copy was added as a reward, an announcement would be made on the update page."

Hmmm. Looks like Sony's involvement in this entire project may, in fact, be zero. Apart from taking the time out in their E3 conference to announce the Kickstarter on stage, and be attached forever to the project as its savior.

This was up for awhile dude. I think the only other platforms they are talking about is mac and maybe Vita.

Honestly, my guess is that it is a clarification since the tone is basically the same as the original post and they specifically mention Xbox etc originally (in the FAQ question). So people probably asked "how will you let us know..."

@charizard1605: I guess but you might be getting lems hope up for no reason. Seems clear this will be PlayStation exclusive especially with Sony's 3rd party relation being involved for almost a year.

Well, the donations have somewhat slowed down. Another platform would only help.

That's the thing- they said they were.

The next day, Yu Suzuki said they weren't, and that Kickstarter is where the majority of the funding would be coming from.

It's all a mess.

Sounds like Videogamer, and by extension, you, are assuming a little bit far here. There is nothing in there that suggests Xbone over something like say, Mac or Linux, also considered separate platforms by most developers.

Whatever get's the game the funding it needs, we need a resurgence of more and more Japanese developers.

@charizard1605: I read that as a hint that the only way an XI version could exist. Is if it is a 12 million dollar goal or one above that. Has Sony actually stated that is exclusive in any form? I'm about to log off, so I got have time for google right now. Maybe Sony's funding of marketing is just for a guaranted PS4 version?

Sony has never stated it is exclusive, to my knowledge.

I've seen quoted that Sony are only involved in the PS4 version's marketing/digital distribution, can't remember where though. Not that that'll be cheap given many games have marketing budgets larger than their production budgets these days.

This is all speculation.. The only thing we KNOW is that it's a kickstarter project that will release on the PS4&PC.. Nothing more.

Don't care really though. Shenmue is Japanese history and should be left as such. Gameplay and game dialogue has moved way beyond this game of yesteryear.

He's probably willing to port his game to a more powerful next gen system but I doubt he is ever going to put the game on xbox 1. Way to get xbox fans hopes up Char. DId you forget NX is being made and will release in the near fuutre, is a japanese system and needs games?

As long as it isn't a current gen system or PC I doubt Sony cares much. If he releases this game on NX in 2018 with it being released on PS4 in 2017 I doubt it will have much effect on PS4 or this generation.

And shenmue 3 continues to be a questionable kickstarter.

Well, it may be gross, but you could also look at as if Sony were the ones willing to give him a platform to create awareness on.

Sony already said they're only willing to finance and market the PS4 port, not the original PC version. If YS Net wants, they could port Shenmue III to other consoles, but they would have to do so with their own funds raised from Kickstarter. But if YS Net decides to port to rival X1, then Sony could cut the funding for the PS4 port. For now, it looks like it might, at the very least, be a timed console exclusive for the PS4.

If you're begging for crowd funding and not receiving any funding from a parent company, I think it's fair to say that you're responsible for making it go to all platforms.

Honestly those two do not entirely contradict themselves. For example Sony may fund the expenses of the PS4 port in the case of the Kickstarter hitting $2 million (which it obviously did), but do nothing more than that. Thus, the game remains fully multiplatform, fully out of Sony's control, mostly crowd funded and still with a little help from Sony.

Though this is all theory until both sides say exactly how they are helping each other.

@charizard1605: For the love of Christ... Sony's involvement revolves around financing the PS4's version and marketing it. That's essentially it. Yu Suzuki has stated numerous times that it's the money that the kickstarter brings in as well as unknown financial backers that will fund the development of the project.

That said, I hope fans that jumped in on the first Xbox with Shenmue 2 get a port for X1 of the new game. Shenmue 3 is being funded by the fans and that includes those that are on Xbox.

This whole situation is just shady and pointless. If Sony really cared for this game then they would have funded it. If they have any real involvement in the game they just make it clear. I don't see this game coming out anytime soon if ever. I see this game in the same boat as Phantom Dust for the Xbox One, no one know what will happen with it.

If Yu Suzuki is smart he would add the Xbox One to the stretch goals. Make it the 5 million goal and watch the number soar.
