Think about it - Most other FPS franchises play it safe and simply make minor tweaks. Very few have gone through the amount of dramatic changes in gameplay and tone that this great and underrated trilogy has undergone. Some of the changes weren't for the best, but they were always new and refreshing. R1 and R2 feel as though they could be two entirely different FPS, and R3 went in an even darker direction. Insomniac never needed to make such changes as they already had a winning formula, but they chose to take the high route anyways and deliver a new experience with each installment. And answer me this -
how many game series kill off their main protagonist half way through the trilogy, hm? Now that took balls.
Some installments are uneven in comparison to others: R1 nailed both it's campaign and multiplayer nicely, R2 had a much weaker campaign but was also one of the funnest and most content-packed multiplayer experiences available on PS3, and R3 dropped the ball entirely with it's multiplayer but backed it up with a tremendously good campaign that was both enthralling and also a nice throwback to old school FPS. As a whole the Resistance series stands as testament to truly creative and daring game design. A diamond in the rough that has been largely forgotten in favor of more generic franchises that only want to appeal to the masses. Insomniac simply has not received the respect that they deserve for this amazing series. My hat is off to them.
