Think about it - Most other FPS franchises play it safe and simply make minor tweaks. Very few have gone through the amount of dramatic changes in gameplay and tone that this great and underrated trilogy has undergone. Some of the changes weren't for the best, but they were always new and refreshing. R1 and R2 feel as though they could be two entirely different FPS, and R3 went in an even darker direction. Insomniac never needed to make such changes as they already had a winning formula, but they chose to take the high route anyways and deliver a new experience with each installment. And answer me this -
how many game series kill off their main protagonist half way through the trilogy, hm? Now that took balls.
Some installments are uneven in comparison to others: R1 nailed both it's campaign and multiplayer nicely, R2 had a much weaker campaign but was also one of the funnest and most content-packed multiplayer experiences available on PS3, and R3 dropped the ball entirely with it's multiplayer but backed it up with a tremendously good campaign that was both enthralling and also a nice throwback to old school FPS. As a whole the Resistance series stands as testament to truly creative and daring game design. A diamond in the rough that has been largely forgotten in favor of more generic franchises that only want to appeal to the masses. Insomniac simply has not received the respect that they deserve for this amazing series. My hat is off to them.

I liked the changed between RFoM and R2 but Insomniac really dropped the ball with R3. I was expecting an awesome conclusion to the story and all I really got was what seemed like a spin off campaign and a laggy ass CoD clone MP. They didn't even do an 8 player online co op mode like R2 had which was a huge letdown.

Resistance: FoM was great. They dropped the ball with 2 and never redeemed the series with 3. Oh well.

That being said, it's not the most daring or original FPS this gen.

I like the Resistance games, I'd even go as far to say that R3 had one of the best SP campaigns of this gen. But as a series it always felt like it was off, and in each one there was an element that just failed to impress. Like R3 had a great campaign, and abysmal multiplayer, the polar opposite of R2. The series has always been held back in that regard from being a great one, but it is a good one.

In other news, The Agonist is awesome.

Resistance: FoM felt like an older WWII game from the PS2 era. Resistance 2 tried to copy the Call of Duty franchise from the current Gen. Resistance 3 came into its own by adding a meaningful narrative and some very memorable moments. Honestly they were all good games, but Insomniac just had no vision in what they were trying to make. They just kept tweaking until they finally found a good formula in the finale. I wouldn't call it the most daring or original FPS this gen by any means.

FoM was good, and it was damn good for a launch title. Resistance 2 was the great. A much bigger campaign than the first one, and the MP was more fleshed out.

Resistance 3 was crap, both in its tiny, low scale campaign and in its sloppy, lag-infested MP.

I'd say games like Borderlands, STALKER, Left4Dead, and Arma were much more ambitious than Resistance. Though I do think the 8-player co-op in R2 is a cool idea.

Except that he wasn't... when he was killed he could've easily killed Master Chief and pretty much any other FPS protagonist with a single move of his hand.

I kinda doubt that.

And Call of Duty has made a habit of killing off protagonists, so I hardly think that aspect makes it original.

It's not a franchise, but the most original FPS I've played this gen is probably Cryostasis. The story, the way it was delivered, the healing system and the mental echo element were all unlike anything I've ever seen in a video game, let alone a first person shooter before. I understand you recently got yourself a gaming pc/laptop, so if you can run this game (which is, unfortunately. horribly optimised), I highly recommend giving it a try. It's like 10 euros on Steam.

The 8 players co-op was incredibly fun... The AI was good.. But the weapons were some of the best i ever use on a FPS by far,the Auger was one cool weapon not only in your hands, but more so on the hands of the enemies, they would make you face those enemies, since the Auger can go through walls,so hiding to regain health wasn't an option.

I thought R3 was the worst in the series. Campaign was good but the shortest yet with a terrible ending. Multiplayer, to this day, is a glitchy unplayable mess with atrocious balancing. I'm pretty sure more people are still playing R2 online as I've popped it in an still find huge games all the time.

I called it daring and original. Which it is. I never called it fun. I think it's boring. But despite that it IS daring and original. That's credit where it is due.

Not at all. Resistance as a series is much much darker than Halo. The Chimera are far more ruthless and evil than the covenant or pretty much any other FPS villain. Their multiplayer also puts more of an emphasis on large scale battles with 40 or 60 players (R3 ditched this concept though for CoD-esque action). Resistance 2 borrowed a couple of things but that's it.

Resistance games are so generic. They have some good gun ideas and the MP is solid but that's about it. They are pretty decent games though and not the garbage that people on here pretend they are (most of those people have never played Resistance before). The series is a solid 7 or 7.5. Not the best but not bad either.

I would say Bioshock is the most daring and orgional FPS series this gen. COD and KZ though are the best.
