Capcom Co., Ltd. (Capcom) today announced that worldwide shipments of RESIDENT EVIL 7 biohazard (RESIDENT EVIL 7), the latest installment in the Resident Evil franchise, for PlayStation®4, Xbox One and Windows PC have surpassed 2.5 million units.

The Resident Evil franchise features survival horror games in which players utilize a variety of weapons and other items to escape terrifying situations. Cumulative sales of the games in the series now total 75 million units* since the first title debuted in 1996. Support from the passionate fan base across the globe even today, more than 20 years later, makes it Capcom's flagship game series. (*As of January 27, 2017)

RESIDENT EVIL 7 is the latest installment, and builds upon the series' roots of fear, exploration and tense atmosphere. The full game is also available to play via the included optional PlayStation®VR Mode for the PS4 version. In order to provide an overwhelming, deeply immersive horror experience, the game's system underwent a dramatic shift from its previous third-person camera to a new first-person perspective. Further, with the new RE ENGINE, a proprietary game engine developed in-house for this title, Capcom has pushed hardware specifications to their limits. As a result, the title garnered attention worldwide, with the demo version exceeding 7.15 million downloads—a record for the series—and the game selling more than 2.5 million units.

As part of Capcom's ongoing efforts to expand the Resident Evil brand beyond the category of games, the newest Hollywood film, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, recorded the film series' largest Japanese box-office opening yet after its December 23, 2016 release, and is slated to open worldwide starting today; additionally, the feature-length CG film RESIDENT EVIL: VENDETTA is scheduled for a May 2017 worldwide release.

Capcom remains firmly committed to satisfying the expectations of all users by leveraging its industry-leading game development capabilities in order to create highly entertaining gameplay experiences.

Everything I've heard indicates that this is a hell of a great game, so this makes me super happy. RE7 is the kind of horror game I've always wanted to play, and I'm so glad Capcom took this risk and were rewarded for it. I can't wait to play this myself.

Well deserved! Like I just said in another thread. Capcom has restored my faith in horror games. What an awesome game! PSVR is a must.

Not at all, I think it's the second or third largest in franchise history

I'm definitely waiting on getting a PSVR myself before I can play this, but lol, there is no way this game is exclusive.

@charizard1605: Well hopefully they ship more, sounds pretty small to me for 3 gaming devices. Resident Evil 6's initial shipments were bout 5 million for just two devices.

Yeah, but Resident Evil 6 was the most successful game in the series that also ended up killing it because of its bad reputation. RE7 has an uphill climb ahead of it just because of that, and because of the dramatic changes it has made to the formula.

I'm still to pick it up.

I'm big fan of the franchise as played 1,2,3,4,5,6, remake, 0, cvx, UC, DC, revelations 1 and 2. Did kinda like the demo but was bit sceptical if it would work well but it seems my doubts have been quashed...

It does seem like a good game, although a bit short, and releasing DLC so close to the launch and asking money for it makes Capcom bigger assholes than they already were. Not gonna pay full price for this game, so if I'm to play it at all, it will be later.

Not sure why Capcom is so persistent on turning me off from their good games.

RE7 was a risky project, so it's nice to see it doing well. Hopefully, this should be the start of a new direction for the series, just like RE4 was... but let's hope they don't screw up the sequels like they did with RE5 and RE6.

To be fair, RE5, for what it was, was a fun, well made game- it just strayed from the roots of the series a bit too much.

RE6 was a fucking trainwreck lol

I'll pick this up on PC one day but feel like I should only play it using VR, which I'll doubt I will buy. Maybe I'll wait for the 2017 steam Halloween sale. Love horror games but I'm on a mission to clear a lot of my backlog.

I'm going to venture a guess and say this game didn't cost nearly as much to make as RE6. So 2.5 million is probably satisfactory for capcom.

2.5 million are just first day sales- given how great the word of mouth and reception for this game is, it will probably continue to sell well for years to come.

And yes, it allegedly cost just a quarter of what RE6 cost to make.

Good for Capcom. They have been on their game lately and all their main series are in there prime right now... lateset offerings in Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Monster Hunter have all been fantastic.

People say Capcom been slacking, but I strongly disagree.

It's actually not that great of a game to be honest, it's still good but it's not great, but I think it probably exceeded many people's expectations, especially given Capcom's track record these last few years, to see them deliver a game of such quality in many ways is something worth celebrating considering the slump they've been in. I'd be pretty satisfied with Capcom if they can make more games this good. When we finally get RE2 remastered, I might be more excited to play it now, not cynically thinking they're only releasing it like they have nothing else to do. You've done good Capcom.

Both things can be true. You see, no matter how good the game is, VR makes a lot of people throw up; that's just the nature of that particular technology.

The game must be selling quite well since it seems sold out at many outlets and rightfully so. I'm curious why Capcom went the TCM route and if the Japanese (Europe too) are familiar with the movie and background.

This is phenomenal news for everyone. Hopefully Capcom gets the message that this is where fans would like Resident Evil to be from here on out tonally. Sweet Jesus, can you imagine a remake of RE 2 in this style?!?!?!

I'm kinda shocked at just how good this game is on every level. They've actually managed to tap into the dna of the series while simultaneously upgrading the game play with top notch visual and sound design as the cherry on top.

Well played Capcom.

I'm not 100% sure about this but isn't it the first full game to take advantage of VR? That would make it the winner by default ya? Full games trump minigame whackadoodle every time methinks. Especially a full game of this quality.

Capcom has a knack for finding ways to take advantage of these peripherals it seems. I own every iteration of RE4 (sad, I know)but the Wii version is still the one I play the most because of how awesome the motion controls work with it. In fact, that's my favorite iteration of RE4 period.

Eh, kind of not the same. I don't think RE5 left a truly bad taste in people's mouth the way RE6 did, so some of RE7 starting off slower is because of how badly RE6 turned people off. Throw in the part where RE6 released on systems with a larger install base and it being a bit more of a shift, and it being usually a slower month (Q4 vs Q1 sales have historically seen more sales in Q4) it's not that big of a deal or surprising that RE7 is starting off slower. The good word of mouth though for the game should give it the legs RE6 never had though.

Plus pretty sure the marketing wasn't nearly the same. I remember seeing RE6 commercials during NBA games, the World Series, the NFL games, barely saw that much stuff on RE7 (which also makes sense given Capcom's financials).

RE7 is everything not to do in a RE game, the boss fights are just bullet sponges out the ass (even more than your typical RE boss)and so far only seeing what 1 enemy type no I'm not counting the flies as a type of enemy and so far the story is actually pretty bad in terms of a RE story. If this was any other game/series it would be torn to shreds but with how much RE5 and RE6 left a bad taste in peoples mouths you can see the derp in their faces and eating up this shit.

While I do criticize the hell out of RE7 (better than praising the shit out of it ignoring its big flaws) it does do things well like the pacing is so far been spot on, while Ethan is a "noobie" to the franchise it's nice to see a RE game not star with Leon,Chris,Jill or Claire and the nod to the classic puzzles is a good touch.

For every step forward, RE7 takes 2 steps back and honestly it just baffles my mind when people have been ignoring the games flaws and these aren't just "oh hey I can ignore it".

Plus pretty sure the marketing wasn't nearly the same. I remember seeing RE6 commercials during NBA games, the World Series, the NFL games, barely saw that much stuff on RE7 (which also makes sense given Capcom's financials).

RE7 is everything not to do in a RE game,

Oh you meant RE7 sucks or something, i thought you meant it sucks that people bought more copies of RE6 over 7. I read it wrong.

Congrats to Capcom. Really looking forward to picking this game up myself in the near future.

Isnt that a small shipment for such a franchise?

it is....

if it sells 3 million or 4 million lifetime then it's a fail.
