We all know PC gaming can be expensive. Building from scratch, upgrading, and even maintaining can cost quite a bit, especially if you're a power user like myself. However I believe that not only is PC gaming worth it because of the massive library of games and no compromises needed to be made on graphics and performance, but that PC gaming eventually pays for itself through F2P games, cheaper games, and straight up free games.

Renegade X launched today absolutely free of charge, and it looks like it can rival the quality of paid AAA shooters.

What is Renegade X? It's Command and Conquer Renegade's multiplayer rebuilt in a modern version of the Unreal Engine. Renegade's multiplayer was the highlight of the 2002 game, but between technical issues and overshadowing by other FPSs, the game never reached mega success. Depsite that, the multiplayer became a cult classic that deserved a re-release.

What sets this game apart from the rest is the primary game mode called Command and Conquer. Two unique teams battle to destroy the enemies base through a variety of methods. Players need to manage their own resources by protecting their harvester while trying to deny the enemy their resources by destroying the enemy harvester. Buildings in the base are all connected to each other with each giving a bonus to the faction. Buildings can be destroyed in a number of ways like planting C4 on a central terminal, bombarding it from the outside, or hitting it with a superweapon.

Check out the trailer!

Here's some gameplay and an explanation of the featured game mode.

Here's some screenshots.

As you can tell the graphics easily rival $60 shooters despite this being totally free.

Games like Renegade X are reasons for owning a PC and is proof that the initial cost of a PC is well worth it if you enjoy games.

Far from it. Comparing the two is to ignore the entirety of what C&C Renegade offered.

FPS/RTS hybrids are really cool and quite fun. Be nice to have more of them. But, consoles.

It's not really an RTS hybrid. It's just more depth to an FPS.

Hyrbid RTSs are pretty niche and not super popular even on the PC. The two that come to mind are Natural Selection 2 and Nuclear Dawn. Both are good games but aren't something that most gamers are able to get into.

Obligatory TITANFALL post. I would have been really excited to play this a long time ago, though.

Oh damn, Renegade was the first multiplayer game I ever played alongside BF 1942. I'm def going to try this for the nostalgic potential.

the website seems to be down right now though.

The visuals are interesting, like a mix between real and slightly cartoony too. I like it

I've been looking forward to this game for a very long time, played their very early beta and had a blast. It was like playing a vastly improved version of the original Renegade, brought back a lot of memories.

The game is so much more than just mindlessly killing each other, it actually encourages teamwork to win, and you can still play by yourself.

I wouldn't say it could rival AAA shooters, but for a free game it looks pretty damn good.

i can't believe you started your topic with pc gaming is expensive.

pc gaming is cheaper than any console i have ever owned.

after the entry price everything else is gravy if you can stand to wait a month or two for price drops on new releases.

i bet i played almost as many pc games last gen as console titles and paid less than half the amount of money in total, hardware included.

This looks awesome. Is it kinda of like Starhawk? Such as being able to build structures/bases as well as run & gun? We need more games like that...

Edit: I'm downloading it now.

I played it for awhile last night. The game is definitely not finished with plenty of bugs that are annoying. The game was made for only 32 players, just like the original, so 64 player on the small maps get chaotic and introduce a lot of lag. The devs have confirmed they are still working on a lot of aspects of the game when it comes to bugfixing and stability, so they should clear up the majority of the issues in the coming months. Progress will be slow though because the devs are doing it for free in their spare time.

The game itself is exactly what it should be, a copy of Command and Conquer Renegade's multiplayer. It's as fun as it ever was. They've tweaked the balance and added a new airstrike mechanic to help alleviate vehicle camping. There is further balance work to be done but the core of the game remains the same and it's a damn good time.

It's getting quite a bit of attention too. I hope it can keep numbers up for months to come. It's a truly unique experience.

I played their Black Dawn campaign aswell for a second time, I forgot how great it is despite having some bugs and glitches. The whole intro of that campaign felt so soothing, and the whole invasion on that island was quite well done. Only the escort mission was a bit tough
