Red Dead Redemption 2 is Gamespot's GOTY 2018

In 2010, GameSpot's Game of the Year was none other than Red Dead Redemption. Eight years later, that game remains one of our all-time favorites, and leaving John Marston behind to step into Arthur Morgan's story wasn't easy. Red Dead Redemption 2 ended up being everything we could have wanted in a prequel, but it's also a moving, often heartbreaking, and oddly hopeful story that stands independently of its predecessor--and that's only part of the reason why Red Dead 2 is GameSpot's 2018 Game of the Year.

@Pedro: Great thing about having PS4 is both GOW and RDR are playable. Realistically The Game Awards have a bigger impact on the public than GameSpot. If this was IGN, you'd have more room to gravel. Why are you bragging on a multiplat game anyway?

It's not my favorite game of the year, but RDR2 is a worthy winner in my opinion.

Well I guess that just confirms that GameSpot is “hardcore Lems” because only they would pick Red Dead Redemption 2 over God of War. ?

Anyway I think RDR2 is a really good choice. I loved the first game and this one looks and sounds fantastic. Look forward to playing it myself.

It's a great game. GoW, RDR2 and Spiderman were 3 of favorite games this gen.

Because it was the friggin' game of the year that year. TA is so good. There are plenty of GS GOTY awards I disagree with, but TA is not one of them.

Then why does it age so poorly? Better games came out in 1997.

Starcraft is a different type of RTS. Same with Warcraft. Blizzard RTS games just never grabbed me the way games like TA and Empire Earth did. They always felt limited to me - maybe it was the smaller scale.

TA does many things better than Starcraft: physics, UI, unit AI, unit variety and tech trees, strategy.

I don't agree that TA has aged poorly. You can buy it on Steam, it works with modern resolutions (after the main menu). The mechanics still hold up. If anything, Total Annihilation invalidates Starcraft for me. I don't ever feel there's a reason to play Starcraft when games like Total Annihilation just do RTS better.

The formula lives on. Supreme Commander in 2007 is very similar and is the logical successor to that formula. It's such a tight game with an extremely powerful and intuitive UI. A flick of the mouse wheel takes you from a view of the entire map down to a single unit. The game is still played a bunch today thanks to the Forged Alliance Forever project.

Starcraft and Age of Empires stole the show and for good reason. What killed TA was that both factions were the same. It was basically a Sci Fi Warcraft II.

Also better games were released in 1997. Diablo (released Dec 31, 1996) and Fallout also would have been better choices.

Really great game. Deserved, though I maybe would've gone elsewhere... I really think indie had an amazing year. Dead cells is maybe the most repayable game ever.

I can see why it won GOTY but it just wouldn't be my personal choice. The game often feels like a chore and I'm not sure if it's the game or just my personal workload but I can't seem to stay awake when playing it. Aside from that the controls are clunky/inaccurate and the random encounters are inconsistent.

Specific instances:

-There was a lumber yard where a tree fell on one of the workers and the prompt told me to press triangle to assist. I did and it wound up choking one of the nearby workers.

-There was an encounter with a family building a home where they were being raided. I killed the raiders to assist them and the father comes over says thank you but then gets hostile and aggressive and tells me not to comeback. (The encounter apparently resets itself because later on everything was fine and they asked me for $100.00)

It's little things like the above that when added up can take away from the overall experience.

The micromanagement system is also a little off. As much as people boast that you "have to take care of this or have to take care of that" the overall impact is minimal. My character has been "underweight" for quite some time with no real impact. The game states it affects stamina but I haven't been in a situation where it became problematic.

Oh and the icing on the cake was when my horse got too close to someone elses horse and they shot me in the face which for some reason prompted me to go into wanted status.

Can't believe rd2 would be anyone's game of the year. The game fucking sucks. I cant bring myself to even boot it up. Got monster hunter world for pc its like crack, cant put it down..

I have more hours in spiderman then I do on red dead 2.

All this talk about the game's chores really put me off the game. I still want to play it, just couldn't schedule anytime for it and don't want to pay full price for it. It's gonna be a 30 dollar game for me.

GameSpot was a PC site back in the '90s, so Total Annihilation was their 1997 PC GOTY.

Also, StarCraft came out in 1998.

I am not talking about 1997, I am talking about RTS history.

And its still a bad look considering Diablo and Fallout would be in that year (if Diablo would be eligible for 1997). Both games are historic game changers.

Red dead 2 is amazing. At first I thought it was a chore to play, but man... I love it. I wish it went on forever. I also love GOW. It’s nice to be able to play both of these monsters.

GoW and Spider-Man are both mediocre in most areas, so better RDR2 to get the goty, even if I'm no fan.

It's probably a good game. Haven't played it myself. Doubt I'd give it GotY if I had, though. It's still a Rockstar game, which means it's probably quite filled with little bugs and annoyances and chores as confirmed by many who've played the game, my friends included.

For me, it's between Monster Hunter World and Smash Bros. Ultimate. The indie scene has been strong as well. Need some more time before deciding.

I sure wish they included an "Easy Arcade Mode" option, I think I'd have more fun and not have took a break from it. lol :P

That's a win for gamers all around. It isn't like an exclusive won GOTY. I don't know why fanboys get so worked up.

Well, PS4 is the only place where you can play GOW and RDR2.
