Except blu ray players arent $800 anymore and if you don't have an hdtv upscaling is worthless.
Samsung Blu Ray Player
Sony Blu Ray Player
The ps3 is way over priced. I know that it may include a blue-ray player which cost like 0ver 1000 dollars but still, a game system should not cost over 500 dollars!!! I know that Sony is considering a price drop and they should definately do it because I am thinking about a ps3 but would never pay 600 dollars for it!footballrha8
Blu-ray doesn't cost $1000 to make. It's what they charge for a Sony blu-ray player. They only cost Sony about $300. If even that much to make anymore.

No it cost them around $800. Where the hell did you get $300 from?
From a what you are getting perspective its well worth it but for a gaming device its obsurd. $600 is a kick to the balls to the majority of people that supported the PS1 and PS2 which were the "casual" machines. The PS3 price tag doesn't appeal to the Playstation demographic. Hence the craptacular sales.
For the package yes you get more then what its worth. As a game system. Well, lets just say a year older and $200 cheaper console should not be outperforming the PS3 in any way shape or form. Period.

$800 is for the whole PS3 system not the blu-ray player!!
For a game console, it's overpriced. For a low end Blu-Ray player, it's about average.GrlGmrIt's actually one of the top Blu-Ray players on the market. Actually, it may be the top now that it has 1080P/24 and DVD upscaling.
A low-end Blu-Ray player it is not. This thing performed on the same level as the Sony BDP-S100 when it launched at $1000, except the ps3 had far faster load times (though it dind't have DVD upscaling at the time). Also, the ps3 plays SACDs, something no other Blu-Ray player can do, and some of the 1st-gen Blu-Ray players couldn't even paly regular CDs.

If Blu-Ray players only cost $300 to make, then they'd be selling them for that in an effort to take away the last thing HD DVD has, the price advantage. They want to kill HD DVD ASAP, and if they could meet their price point, they'd be doing it right now.

They don't cost $800 to make or they would never be in the PS3. My understanding they are coming out for PC's and only cost about $300[QUOTE="makingmusic476"][QUOTE="atarigrad"][QUOTE="squirrel337"][QUOTE="atarigrad"][QUOTE="footballrha8"]The ps3 is way over priced. Also, the OEM pc drives cost around $450-500, and that's just a drive. When you add in the extra components required to make a dedicated player (visual/audio processing, visual/audio output, support for BD-java, a DVD-upscaling chip, etc.) costs go up even higher.
Actually, that's another feature of the ps3. Up until the latest BR players launched, the ps3 was the only player to fully support BD-Java. I think the Sony BDP-S300 is the first standalone player to support it.
Wii is overpriced. iPhone is overpriced. Gas is overpriced.NobuoMusicMaker

Thats the thing the PS3 is not just a game system...
It's not overpriced. If anything, it is UNDERpriced for what it gives you. But that doesn't stop it from being expensive. Expensive is expensive.Verge_6
The videogame part is overpriced though you can't argue that. The 360 graphics are equal or better then most PS3 games so far and I don't think the PS3 is going to get any better during it's entire lifespan.

Well, this is regarding the system as a whole.

That's why the PS3 is #3 and will be for some time. Sony made the PS3 the Trojan horse for the Blu-Ray format. The most expensive part in the PS3 is the Blu-Ray drive I believe.

You are correct. But it still costs them about $830 to make each PS3, so they ARE selling it at a loss, and a substantial one at that.
Actually you can buy a mid range Sony blu ray player for $599 CDN, it was on sale for $500 awhile ago. Why is the PS3 still $699 in Canada? Our dollar is almost as high as the US, yet they don't lower the price. Sony being greedy by not lowering the canadian msrp?
$600 USD = 635 CDN. The PS3 should retail for like $634.99 or $639.99, we pay our dues and fees which is 14% tax on top of retail price.
It is expensive, not overpriced.makingmusic476
Yes, but even a guy working at Burger King can afford one.

Actually, the RSX cost more than the Blu-Ray drive.

If PS3 didnt have Blu-Ray player, just standard DVD, it would be $350 or$400 and it would be selling like hot-cakes on a coner.
Personally I would have bought one at that price. even without the movie player and the dreaded Cell processor, just as long as it could deliver my games, like the 360 is doing.

The Blu-Ray drive cost about $125 to manufacture at the launch of the ps3, so the thing would still cost around $715 to make. It would not have been sold for $400.
People need to stop blaming "the trojan horse" for the high price of the ps3. Blu-Ray is only one of many things that make the ps3 so expensive, and without it it still would've been expensive as hell. If Sony didn't include it, the ps3 would probably still cost $600, as the only reason they are willing to lose $250 per system is because they know it's winning them the format war. Had the ps3 cost $715 to manufacture at launch, they probably would've only risked losing ~$100 per console because they wouldn't have had Blu-Ray royalties to make up the losses.
Ps3 is expensive not overpriced.... at launch it was really underpriced.
Wii is cheap(relatively), but overpriced.
360 is about right in pricing but something needs to change soon...... hardware redesigned to be reliable or cheaper prices.

funny thing is that the "dreaded" cell is far better than the 360's cpu easyPlease Log In to post.
