Let's take a look at Microsoft in the past 5-10 years. They closed down Lionhead Studios (Fable series), yes, but they also have acquired so many other studios.

In 2018 alone, they acquired Compulsion Games, inXile Entertainment, Ninja Theory, Obsidian, Playground Games as well as opening brand new studio, The Initiative. In the last 5 years now, they have hardly had anything come from any of these acquisitions- Bleeding Edge (which was a complete flop both critically and commercially, small player base at launch, developer abandoned the game in less than a year) and some Forza racing titles. Wasteland Remastered? Wasteland 3? Don't know, don't care, never heard of them. Pentintent? Grounded? These are free-to-play, early access type titles, coming from larger studios under AAA Microsoft. Wtf.

In 2019, they acquired Double Fine Productions who then releases Psychonauts 2 on Xbox, PlayStation, PC. Okay.

In 2021, they acquired Zenimax/Bethesda who's so far noteworthy releases have all been on their competitor's platform (Deathloop, Ghostwire Tokyo) and not even their own. What is going on here and why should anyone be trying to get a $500 Xbox Series X or even an S when you get more bang for your buck on PS5 or by building a gaming rig?

@jippo: It wouldn't have come out for Xbox anyway. When Marvel made the deal, they were going to first parties and asking them to treat the game like a first party development. They wanted to make a AAAA exclusive. MS had the same opportunity to develop the game as a first party exclusive but turned it down.

Insomniac was purchased *after* Spiderman released.

didn't know that ...thanks

MS is the victim in this story, the pathetic sony has been abusing their market position with exclusivity deals, and the scam FTC even fall for it. MS had no choice but to buy out AB, to stay competitive.

MS can never be a victim. They make victims

Also, what is "abusing a market position"? Money is king in this market. How has MS not been able to gain leverage to their advantage with this thus far?

its simple my friend. Look at a game like FF7 remastered as an example. It sells 10 million on ps and 2 million on xbox. Sony goes to SE and tells them, we will pay you to keep the game off xbox. This means 2 million * 50 (avg price per copy) or $100 million. MS needs to come back and match that, just to keep it multiplatform.

If MS wanted to make it exclusive to xbox, they need to pay 10 million x 50 copies or around $500 million.

This is what it means to abuse market position. Sphony is able to do this only for big games where they have a huge market advantage. Mostly JRPGs like FF and DQ. But games like CoD, they can't afford to pay the price for exclusivity.

There's no reference level there to account for that. That deal was made at the dawn the PS4 days so the market position of either competitor could have gone either way. They were paid for the exclusive. Apparently that wasn't something Xbox sought for their console so, PS got it.

There's nothing stopping MS from going to companies like Square/Enix and securing their own deals. These deals are done to boost marketshare after all and as long as the dev/pub is compensated for the work, that's what matters in the end.

Well, since the case has been brought to court by the FTC, it is already at the stage where legal technicalities need to be discussed. How Phil personally feels about it no longer matters and he should be aware of that.

Nevertheless, the fact that he has abandoned his "good guy" act and expressed blatant hostility towards Sony in public seems to indicate that he may be becoming a bit mentally unstable. This should not come as a surprise, though, as he will almost certainly be discharged from MS if this deal fails.

Well, I fail to see how Nintendo tries to make Xbox smaller by blocking the ActiBlizz deal (which is what Phil is referring to). Maybe Phil fails to see that too, and doesn't blame Nintendo because of that.

Sony opened the can of worms? Microsoft has never made third party or marketing deals ever. No sirree bob! Also, what publishers did Sony purchase to keep MS from playing their games? These Xbox drone narratives are are good for a laugh

Sony buys time exclusives. FF7 Remake still not on Xbox. FF 16 also time exclusive till end of 2023. Sony not buying big publishers but they still playing dirty by buying time exclusives.

Dirty? Do you have some type of mental lapse or do they not know they company you are trying to make an argument for?

Did you forget Oblivion, BioShock, and Mass Effect on 360? ALL those were bought timed exclusive timed deals for MS my guy.

I don't remember anyone calling what MS did in the 360 days "dirty" for any of those exclusive deals. But you *fans flip flop on your argument stance every time you can't use it as an advantage.

"Sony do dirty" you sound like Phil Spencer crying about Sony not agreeing to have them ruin gaming by creating a monopoly.

"Sony do dirty" you sound like Phil Spencer crying about Sony not agreeing to have them ruin gaming by creating a monopoly.

A lot of "PC/360" games were not a timed exclusive - devs just skipped the PS3 for a while.

This is because (despite what cows want to believe), in the markets that games like these mattered (wester RPGs), the 360 beat the snot out of the PS3 -especially at the beginning of the PS3's lifecycle.

The 360 and PCs had the same family of hardware where as and the PS3 having that dumb Cell processor, it was cost prohibitive to put games on PS3 because a lot of things had to be rewritten to use the Cell. Combine that with a far lower userbase the first few years after it launched, and you had the whole "PC360" scenario.

Bioshock was a paid timed exclusive for sure, though.

But, to your point - is it "dirty" on both sides. But, MS has never done timed exclusives to the extent Sony has. Sorry, but that's just a fact.

Wow this guy is unbelievable. At one point he was deriding fanboyism and taking jabs at others:

"That tribalism in the industry, if there was anything that would ever drive me out of the industry, it's actually that, what you're talking about."

...and now is feeding directly into it. Just another example of this guy talking out of both sides of his mouth.

Funny thing is he could say the same about Nintendo but instead specifically decides to single out someone. There's your tribalism, Phil.

Instead of pointing fingers, stop making Xbox smaller, Phil. You realize it's on you to make it bigger by actually shipping games. It's not Sony's fault you haven't been doing that.

Maybe if this was the NES era... Nintendo has not had that power since PlayStation kicked their asses twice in a row (N64 v PS1, GC vs PS2). As much as I hated when Nintendo bought Next Level Games, that is nowhere near the level of buying a publisher that already owns multiple companies (including the once beloved Blizzard). In addition, Sony and MS have more influence in Big Tech while Nintendo barely makes a dent if not a scratch.

Also...

Manticore, thanks, get it right

Manticores do not exist. Everyone has a bias. Every "Manticore" I have seen are either cows or hermits, never sheep or lems.

@girlusocrazy: This is a weird post. Not sure why Phil would ever want, or think Nintendo will bring games to PC.

He will also view it as a different competitor, Sony is much more aligned with Microsofts software/hardware whereas Nintendo tends to be weaker hardware aimed at a different demographic.

The third party argument as well, at the end of the day what they care about is money/sales. Typically, third party releases on Nintendo are comparatively poor.

@girlusocrazy:

Unlike MS, Nintendo's trying to nurture internal developers and do a lot in-house.

Said like a bad thing.

They have a lot of influence too when they want to pick a third party for a collab, they can be kingmakers.

But they aren't outright buying them are they? Or hell, when they do exclusive content, it's rare and hardly makes a dent (ask Blizzard, EA and Namco Bandai) unless it's SoulCalibur II.

Phil still hangs around Nintendo every day with a "c'mon if you do it I'll be your best friend" attitude and then at night low key cries into his pillow because they won't bring their games to PC day one...

But wait, you said this to Cup...

Not sure why he wouldn't want it. Similarly he should be thankful Sony wants to bring their games to PC at all but instead he's crying that it's not day one. 🤷‍♂️ Kind of an entitled attitude.

So, like the Senator from Metal Gear Rising, you made it the f*** up?

Loading Video...

Anyway...

It's no secret they wanted to buy Nintendo

Yeah... and I think Phil, hell MS themselves, know that was dumb to offer, let alone consider. At the least, they did get Rare out of that. But that was it.

You can own a bunch of stuff and still have preferences. You can own a bunch of games and prefer some over others, does that make you a fanboy?

Doesn't make one less of one. I still have heavy Nintendo leanings, and I have been buying modern Xbox stuff and retro PC games on Steam for sometime.

Also, back to said collabs...

The collabs do well, partnering with Nintendo is attractive due to this, and if you get your products promoted by Nintendo too.

F-Zero GX. Chibi-Robo Zip Lash. Star Fox Assault. Star Fox Zero. Wonderful 101. They all would like a word.

Sony have been money hatting non stop.

Sony force developers to keep their games off Gamepass. That's a dirty move.

Listen, cows can try and spin this all day. No one is buying it. Sony have been money hatting for so long that no one has any sympathy for them when MS buys publishers.

Sorry, this thread is doa. Only your fellow cows will buy what your selling.

This "nurture" myth is such a bizarre Sony fetish among the fans.

None of them nurture a thing. The best thing Sony ever did was that they never pressure a developer to rush games out, that's literally it.

And that's what MS is now doing, which is why the release schedule has dramatically slowed. Which is why there's been a longer gap between FM7 and FM8 and FH4 and FH5 for example. If they were still rushing games out, a lot more would have released in the last couple of years.

The latest Pokemon game is a shit show. Nurture? They didn't even quality control.

What MS is doing is right. I admired Sony for not rushing games out on the PS3, and MS are doing the same thing.

You'd think that after 3 gens now of losing to Sony that Phil and the Xbox team would learn that obviously sony is doing something right, but noooooo. We get the same tired, old crap from MS and Phil, a guy who only got his job because he was the only one who left when everyone else quit. I'm sorry, but the Xbox is a brand not worth paying attention to.

Nintendo doesn't do this? I thought they did...

I hope it works out for them and for gamers, so far it didn't give me a reason to get an Xbox

The latest Pokemon game is a shit show. Nurture? They didn't even quality control.

Pokemon is made by Game Freak, but yeah Nintendo approved it. Any other examples?

Results will not be fast. Sony has been doing it for a long time.

I have always said, this gen is more about Xbox getting back on their feet and their plans will take a long time to bare fruit. As will the Zenimax deal.

They won't catch up to Sony in any meaningful ways this gen, but they'll be in a stronger position next gen.

I've always said this.
