Phil Spencer claims PlayStation wants to grow ‘by making Xbox smaller’

“Sony is trying to protect its dominance on the console. The way they grow is by making Xbox smaller,” Spencer said.

“[Sony] has a very different view of the industry than we do. They don’t ship their games day and date on PC, they do not put their games into their subscription when they launch their games.”

“Sony is leading the dialogue around why the deal shouldn’t go through to protect its dominant position on console, so the thing they grab onto is Call of Duty,”

Siiigh. Phil stating this like Microsoft hasn't been the masters of capitalism for almost five decades now. Look, MS. You will never be an underdog in this industry, you currently have one publisher, and many studios under your belt, and you still can't seem to get games out in a timely manner. I don't think the problem is content.

MS can afford to not only buy up pubs, but also take a loss leader strategy by putting all these games under a sub service day one. Never used to hear MS bellyache directly about their rivals, but it sounds like it's getting under their skin. All that talk about Sony not being their competition, but Google, Amazon and others seems to be a great big load of horseshit.

This outburst almost makes it seem like he's trying to lose the ABK deal. You spend years on social media trying to brand a "good guy" image, then you flush it all at once at the first sign of resistance from government agencies. Phil's finally sounding like he has to justify his position of VP of Gaming at Microsoft.

Those 70 billion they have can green light multiple projects from the studios they already own and they could be pushing out content for their service. Instead they’re just trying to buy publishers to control who has access to major ips. Sony didn’t make them do that. They made bad choices all on their own. Like cancelling scalebound, passing on Spider-Man exclusivity, and not releasing any major exclusives for an entire year.

Funny that the reason they gave marvel for not taking Spider-Man was because they wanted to work on their own ips. Now look.

Not to mention they didn't even have to lose the Call of Duty marketing deal, they just gave it up. Now they're trying to get the whole shebang. I can tell all the money they got to blow on video games is a more recent thing because now they're practically screaming, "WHY HASN'T THIS MARKET SUCCUMBED TO US YET?!"

No excuses, Phil. You should be investing in your companies and developing new ones, not trying to buy out huge publishers just to have an edge on the competition.

Ten years may seem like a long time, but as you get older, time starts going by faster and faster, and before you know it, CoD would be Xbox exclusive after the contract expired. It makes sense why Sony would be against this. And reading some of the posts in this thread, you guys have good points. Why focus on buying up more studios when you could be honing what you have already? This is why I'm glad I'm not involved in the decision making behind this. XD

However if you want to go the route of them paying to keep games off of other platforms then they most certainly did that as well in the past. They’re just crying now though because Microsoft has a bigger wallet and they showed them how the big boys play this game. 😅

What can of worms what that be? Studios and IPs have been sold and aquired on a moderate scale throughout the decades without much of fuss.

It is so funny reading the complaints about this deal when the same folks who have been cheering exclusives at the top of their lungs. Now that MS is actually putting their money where their mouth is (keep in mind OP was one of the goons who said that they should in the past), the tears are flowing. "They should invest in creating their own studios" but they are mute when Sony makes acquisitions. In fact, the same goons in this thread create celebration threads.😂

I never said MS needed to waste all their cash reserves to buy up pubs to keep third party IPs away from other systems. And that's not even something Sony has the capital to do. MS missing the occasional third party exclusive or getting it later isn't nearly on the same level as what MS is trying to do, and you know it. There's a reason they're now at odds with regulating bodies as opposed to Sony.

Ok bro, PlayStation isn't the one spending billions to buy out Doom, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Call of Duty, Diablo, Quake, Wolfenstein, Crash Bandicoot, Candy Crush, Starcraft, Overwatch, Starfield, Dishonored, Redfall, Prey, Warcraft etc.

Nothing is stopping them from weilding those IPs to make others smaller either. Microsoft isn't nobler than PlayStation.

Sony isn't a regulatory agency holding back the deal, they only raised objections with it. MS drew this attention to themselves because they make themselves too obvious when they want to control a market.

They raise prices because they care. They don't have BC support for PSVR with their new hardware because they care. In the fall of 2019 Sony had bought Insomniac Games which brought out Spiderman for Sony and didn't come on the xbox because sony had bought Insomniac games.
