Meta has started licensing the operating system for its Quest headset to other hardware makers, starting with Lenovo and Asus. It’s also making a limited-run, gaming-focused Quest with Xbox.

On the theme of opening up, Meta is also pushing for more ways to discover alternative app stores. It’s making its experimental App Lab store more prominent and even inviting Google to bring the Play Store to its operating system, which is now called Horizon OS. In a blog post, Meta additionally said that it’s working on a spatial framework for developers to more easily port their mobile apps to Horizon OS. Verge

I remember the Sony fannies hyping PSVR2 and touting the out of stock as a sign of success (Portal is next). A little over a year later, it is not only missing in action but is now Sony's latest $600 abandonware, meanwhile Oculus is spreading the "love".😏

PSVR2 cost way more than the base PS5 console itself. PSVR2 without outside support was dead on arrival and should have had PC support day one. Oculus being the PC focus does give it an advantage. The reason to ever get a PSVR2 is for the exclusives and those exclusives are hard to come-by due to development time and lack of support.

No one want's to admit it but PSVR2 is dying faster than the PS Vita itself and this is coming form someone who really like his Vita😢

Happy with my psvr2,but I can understand some people might not be able to afford it. They really should have lowered the price by now. VR really is great, shame Sony doesn't support it like they should.

If PSVR2 was Backwards Compatibility for the first PSVR1 games, it would have done slightly better than it is now.

it's almost as if the better strategy is to try to reach as many customers as possible rather than limit your reach to only one platform.. 🤔

I thought Oculus was interesting until at one point we were forced to scan a piece of ID to verify who we were, or lose the account and any purchase. I should have expected this from Meta.

It was interesting to use as a Steam VR device and worked well for that, but now I won't even recommend it for this.

I hear Meta is expanding the platform to third party hardware manufacturers which is a good move for them, but I won't be supporting or recommending the platform.

Is Oculus the old name for Quest? I did not understand why Meta changed ther VR device's name from Oculus (Latin for "eye") to "Quest" which has a generic ring to it.

Another great piece of hardware that Sony failed to support. Just like the Vita. If they weren't going to spend considerable resources on 1st party games for it, at the very least they should've opened the piggy bank and got Half Life Alyx on the thing. I would've bought one just for that.

Also, how's that Apple Vision Pro doing? Lol

It was called Oculus Quest before, but Oculus was bought by Facebook. Facebook later changed their own name to Meta and they wanted to re-brand it under Meta. So, now it is Meta Quest.

Having dealt with Facebook (own Rift S) won't be getting any product from them again. Fairly interested in the PSVR2 for the PC end.

But, they are all at fault. By default it was limited platform, instead of having it open they immediately tried to segment off their piece of the pie to the platforms detriment.

By comparison Valve with Alyx attempted to leave open it up as much as possible, including contracted Facebook, who ignored them, and to date it's the second best selling VR game behind Beat Sabre.

I'm interested to see what the Xbox partnership turns into. The limited edition headset comes with a Xbox controller and Game Pass. I really hope that ends up being more than just playing Xbox on a virtual screen

I can't. The Meta inferface coupled with the Steam interface coupled with the Windows shell made the whole thing spaz out.

It was one of the worst experiences in my life. meanwhile bought this for 40 cents:

I pressed "start". Fairly easy. On Meta.

Flat-screen Halflife 2 redundant. Probably never play it again like that.

If you want to play Steam games you have to install Steam shell on that Meta shell that is running on Windows.

I know this goes fairly easy for most, it's just that I did not feel like troubleshooting yet another system, and doing so while constantly having to put these glasses on, off, on, off

Honestly the only thing that I was looking forward to was gaming while standing up.

I love flat screen HL 2, I played it just a couple of months ago:

Love how flat everything looks!

Ugh.....Meta. Why does VR need to be at the mercy of meta? Valve? Any word on that rumoured standalone headset? Valve? VAAAAALVVVEEEE ah they ain't listening. As with anything Meta: my reaction to this news is "What's the catch?".

Anywho a shame about PSVR but it's been clear that Sony don't have the resources to support 2 platforms at the same time. And VR is a different platform. Even if it's running on the same console...it's just a different beast altogether. Vr requires it's own games.

I don't know if i'll pick up sonys headset. I already have an Index and, like, 30% of a plan to get it back up and running. The lighthouses are great for tracking....but man they are a pain to accommodate.

As I have said in other threads: hopefully we at least see an exchange of games from the PC and PS side so VR devs can have more opportunity to get more money. And games originally built for Meta Quest too...get them onto other platforms also. VR, sadly, is a small market so trying to slice it up just makes no sense.

Sony need to hurry up and make this available to other applications other than Sony. From what I hear the tech is awesome, but limiting this to such a niche of games is just killing yourself.

Portal will not suffer the same fate as it's actually available to most (if not all) games on PS5.

Support Valve in 2 seconds if they released a cheaper version.

You can love it flat, but if you actually played through it in VR you'd 100% be agreeing with me.

Not just the fact the gunplay is automatically leaps and bounds better, VR gives it the sense of scale and solidity. When a helicopter goes over your head, it feels like you're looking at the proper scale of a helicopter. Striders etc..

But again the software side was spazing out on me, I can't really help that.

Cool but know that you are going to purchase a device Sony has abandoned faster than the Vita according to some.

Can confirm. I’ve used the Arcade 1UP machines 1000X more than my VR headsets. What cabinet are you thinking about getting @silentchief?
