The Switch is beating expectations.

Research firm SuperData revealed today that its analysis shows that Nintendo has sold 2.4 million Switches during its first month of release. The home console/portable hybrid launched worldwide on March 3. SuperData noted that it collaborated with market researcher Gfk and the Japanese gaming publication Famitsu to come up with the figure.

SuperData now projects that the Switch will sell 7.2 million consoles in 2017. That is up from its original forecast of 5 million units, showing that this is a better start than the research group was expecting.

Industry-tracking firm The NPD Group noted yesterday that the Switch sold 906,000 consoles in March in the U.S., beating the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Nintendo also managed to sell 925,000 copies of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, meaning that the praised open-world game actually had an attach rate higher than 100 percent.

SOURCE

Nintendo's own forecast was for 2 million units- they have sold more units than they expected to produce (meaning they did try to produce more units to keep up with stock).

For now, the Switch is off to a great start.

Good for them. I'm looking forward to June when ARMS comes out. I think I will pick up Lego City and a bunch of indie titles before then too.

Very solid. The greatest signal of success will be how the market responds as Nintendo kills the 3DS. But the true testing period is the first year as a whole - Nintendo has to sell 40m+ of these things, in my eyes, to justify producing hardware.

You do realize this is a console right? Name 1 console that has sold 40M+ in its 1st year or even half of that.

@kingtito: I didn't imply (or at least mean to) that the Switch needed to sell 40m right away - I'm speaking to its lifetime. And we've been here before with Nintendo: hot start with a rapid decline in subsequent months. The enthusiasm for a Switch will cool down, it's just a matter of when.

And buy the marketing pitch if you want, but the Switch is a handheld first and console second (and fairly shitty as to the latter).

@charizard1605: Had I meant to imply selling 40m in the first year, I wouldve conjoined the clauses with a semi-colon. Mind the grammar knave :P

40m lifetime, minimum

I must say I'm surprised with its success. Zelda scores sure helped.

Saying this I'm happy consoles are still being sold like crazy. Where are the PC gamers bloating about the doom of consoles?

But then you contradict yourself- what Nintendo handheld had demand for it die down and failed to sell? Even the Nintendo 3DS had its strongest year ever last year, which was its sixth year on the market.

Contextual misunderstanding :P

If you are treating it as a handheld, it shall definitely sell well over 40 million

@charizard1605: I swear we go over this every time we talk about Nintendo. First year 35% price cut. Without it, the Vita/3DS story would have been far more compelling if they were retailing at the same price.

Granted it worked out. But doing it again with Switch will make the case that hardware just isn't worth it more and more prevalent. So if the Switch sales start to flag in this first year, the uneasiness will be palpable.

@charizard1605: also, the 3DS wasn't good until the XL. And it succeeded in spite of its primary feature; 3D is and was - as implemented - lacking in merit.

No handheld sold 40 million, but the DS sold over 30 million in one year if I recall.

You should celebrate if Switch wont end up in a serious life support after 3 years or something and not if it sells 14 million in its first year or having a spike of great games for a a year or two.

Thats the only thing you should celebrate for at this point and as im saying 2 years now , for Switch and Nintendo , that is the biggest bet they should win this generation , no , they HAVE to.

As long as nintendo considering this a console , hybrid in short , ill take it as that. And for a console has no chance to survive for too long with lack of 3rd parties if they dont get serious and support the system all the way with 1st/2nd parties.

But it's also a handheld. Nintendo handhelds always get third party support, and last for years. The 3DS had its best year ever last year, which was its sixth year on the market. It is set to continue until at least next year, by which point it will be eight years old.

Switch is likely to be supported in a similar manner, especially since Nintendo has no other system to fall back on.

I didnt see any spectacular than the usual support from either Nintendo nor any 3rd party towards Switch from Direct though. We will see

i doubt it will sell as good next month.

but if it sells at least 2million WW. it will have sold faster than the ps4's 4 million WW in 2 months despite not launching in the holidays!

amazing.

New news, new thread.

Please leave the moderation stuff to the moderators, thanks :)

Well if you did a better job...

What exactly was done wrong here in this thread? It even notes the NPD sales in the article he linked to.

Well, apparently name is what sells consoles. There goes Shew's theory out the window.

This console literally has one fucking game, which might I add that I can buy for my WiiU, and mobile phone hardware.

I see the same pattern with Switch. A great exclusive and then .. what exactly ? We will see , i hope if it sells great in the end for 1st and 3rd parties to get better and be sustainable for a whole generation and not 2-3 years top.

Enthusiasm for a new piece of kit. Not surprised, let's see if Nintendo's learned anything. They've shown in a past that they have to be hammered in the head over and over to change. If this is the same old Nintendo, Switch will do better but only so far.
