Nintendo executive says Tears of the Kingdom is worth the $70

Nintendo of America president Doug Bowserhas said the company expects The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to justify its $70 price tag.

The company announced last month that the upcoming game costs $69.99, marking the first time it has charged more than $59.99 for a standard edition of a digital Switchtitle.

In a recent interview, Nintendo’s US boss was asked how the platform holder reached its decision to price Tears of the Kingdom at $70.

“We look at what the game has to offer,” Bowser told Associated Press. “I think fans will find this is an incredibly full, deeply immersive experience. The price point reflects the type of experience that fans can expect when it comes to playing this particular game.”

After the game’s price was announced, a Nintendo spokesperson suggested $70 won’t necessarily be the new norm for first-party Switch software, stating that the company determines the suggested retail price of its products “on a case-by-case basis”.

Bowser said on the matter: “This isn’t a price point that we’ll necessarily have on all our titles. It’s actually a fairly common pricing model either here or in Europe or other parts of the world, where the pricing may vary depending on the game itself.”

Sony began charging $70 for first-party games when PS5launched in 2020, while Microsoft started charging $70 for first-party Xbox Series X/S games this year.

Thoughts, SW? Should game prices vary depending on the game? I recently bought Dead Space Remake for $50. I feel like that price is more fair than $70 considering it’s a remake of a game I already played.

Whether one agrees with this or not, one thing is for sure, don't anticipate waiting for a price drop. Nintendo rarely fluctuates their prices. I'd rather play it when I want than wait the better part of a year for a maybe $10-$15 discount during the holidays.

Not saying I'm okay with this, but that's just the reality of the situation. They know there's only one place to play this (legitimately), customers know that too, they name this price, you either accept that or wallow over it:

I do think game pricing can be silly. Full priced POS, it's alright if it's AAA. Actual great game, but of a lower budget? Nope!

Whether a game is worth its price is up to the consumer, as not all consumers agree whether a certain game is worth its price. Since the Legend of Zelda is a high-tier series, gamers are willing to pay $70 for Tears of the Kingdom. I doubt that a low-tier series will ask for $70.

Judging by the voice of Ganon in the last Tears of the Kingdom trailer, the voice acting will be horrible yet again. Sounded like a nerd trying really hard to sound cool, which is exactly what it was.

I really don’t get all the hype for this, beyond just a free pass for being a Zelda game. I enjoyed my time with BotW, but it got really samey halfway through, and the TOTK trailers looked exactly like just more of the same. By their own admission they’re even reusing the same map with minor differences, not to mention no graphical upgrade. Majora’s Mask may have been only a slight graphical upgrade and reused character models, but at least they bothered to make all new maps and areas.

This should have been an expansion pack.

I'm of the belief that no Switch game should even cost $60 considering they're basically designed to run on almost 20 year old specs. Especially when we're talking about the likes of Animal Crossing and Pokemon and all the Wii U ports.

I'm also of the belief, Nintendo should bleed its fans as much as possible.... so hopefully the Switch 2 version costs $80

I don't like games costing $70, but I can appreciate the development costs of certain games on current gen hardware. It just looks stupid that Nintendo wants to join in, just because.

I don't think even MS wanted to raise the prices of games to $70, they held off as long as possible.

I think Sony felt they had to. But I'd prefer if Sony did it on a more game by game basis rather than making it a standard price. There are some games that clearly shouldn't be $70, like TLOU 1 turbo hyper fighting remaster 2.

Everyone should do it on a per game basis. I look at a game like Starfield and I'd say it makes sense, but others not so much.
