**Please know the difference between your personal opinion and important.**
_______________________________________________________________

The Official
List, containing the single most essential video and computer games that had the most impact on gaming this decade, has finally been released on GameSpot. Find out which games truly are the most important, when all fanboyism is removed from sight.

_______________________________________________________________

Top Games That Changed Gaming Forever

5.UNCHARTED 2: AMONG THIEVES
When: 2009
On: PlayStation 3
Why is this on the list:
No, this is not a joke. Anybody who has played this game is aware of the fact that it is a true masterwork, and will inspire gaming developers in every single genre for years to come. The fact that the PlayStation 3 is a failure doesn't change the fact that its greatest game, "UNCHARTED 2", is brilliance at its finest. Who would have really thought that one of the decade's most entertaining as well as best video game would have come at the end of it?
[Entertainment value (my personal opinion): 9]
[Revolutionary factor: 9]
[Influence on Gaming: 10]
[Longevity: N/A]

4.WORLD OF WARCRAFT
When: 2004
On: PC
Why is this on the list:
If you deny this, then you should presumably stop reading and begin gaming, am I correct? Because this is serious talk. Even if you didn't like WoW, you can't question the impact of the game on gaming as a whole. Blizzard Entertainment succeeded in uniting over 10 million gamers around the world in their own world. Hell, WoW is larger than my country! Nonetheless, if you throw away all this talk about it being huge and recognizable, you've got yourself one absolutely excellent, most addictive game, and the best world ever.
[Entertainment value (my personal opinion): 8.5]
[Revolutionary factor: 8]
[Influence on Gaming: 10]
[Longevity: 10]

3.HALF-LIFE 2
When: 2004
On: PC
Why is this on the list:
The Greatest Sequel Ever Made. Six years in development, Valve finally released a masterpiece of truly epic proportions. The characters, story line, graphics, physics and atmosphere made it a true piece of history. Valve's second is not as good or as entertaining as the original Half-Life, but easily among the best of this decade, that now ends. One of two that are true symbols for first-person shooter gaming this decade.
[Entertainment value (my personal opinion): 10]
[Revolutionary factor: 9]
[Influence on Gaming: 10]
[Longevity: 8]

2.GRAND THEFT AUTO III
When: 2001
On: PlayStation 2
Why is this on the list:
This little game literally entered the book "How Video Games Should Be Produced" and rewrote it, entirely. It inspired countless of developers once made available to the general public. If you don't consider this one of the most essential, then you're probably not a gamer and only own a Nintendo Wii.
[Entertainment value (my personal opinion): 9]
[Revolutionary factor: 10]
[Influence on Gaming: 10]
[Longevity: 9.5]

1.HALO: COMBAT EVOLVED
When: 2001
On: Xbox
Why is this on the list:
The defining date of this decade: November 15, 2001.
00 - 09 was the decade of the first-person shooters - no contest. Today, the first-person shooter genre is the most popular in the entire world, and nothing else even comes remotely close.
Consoles have stolen the crown from the once-PC. Microsoft is now at least as powerful as Sony in the console branch. The Xbox and Xbox 360 are considered "shooter consoles" with focus on online.
Reason? All of this can be traced back to November 15th, 2001.

Halo defines this decade. Halo truthfully owned everything and everyone, and will forever be remembered as a true landmark in gaming history. Hats off, folks.

[Entertainment value (my personal opinion): 10]
[Revolutionary factor: 10]
[Influence on Gaming: 10]
[Longevity: 10]

Honorable Mentions:

Resident Evil 4
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Gears of War
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Halo 2
BioShock
____________________________________

Now Merry Christmas, and happy new year! The 00-09 decade has been absolutely awesome. Hopefully, this one will be even more exciting.

Claiming that UC2 have had a '10' in influence on gaming is just silly. The game hasn't been out long enough to have had any influence on anything yet. Never mind making any sort of predictions on what kind of influence it would have over a decade. I'm not saying it's a bad game but talking about it influencing the industry at this point just make the whole post reek of blind fanboyism.

While each of the other games have had a lot of influence on games over the last decade it's missing games such as Deus Ex, Mario Galaxy. It's nice that you have a list of games you really like but calling it an official gamespot list.. especially when the first item on the list makes no sense in this context seem a little... weird?

U2 is not important at all. It just came out, and really does not add anything new to the table.

Yes this. Heck I do not even agree with Half life as far as major games of the decade. Uncharted though there is in no way shape or form should ever be considered top 5 game sof the decade.

Ugh...another "Most Important" list that puts Halo in the #1 slot. And is it ironic that in the Uncharted 2 block, the OP clearly defines the PS3 as a failure? Not only does this list reek on so many levels by leaving out such games as Deus Ex, but it reeks of insipid fanboyism as well.

How could a list not have sims, nintendo dogs, or wii sports if it is talking about most important games. The most important games list is going to look incredibly ugly because most of the games will be casual. Those are the most influential games because they sold the most. Halo CE isn't on the list. Guitar hero possibly. Maple story possibly. Even some Zegna facebook applications.

1. Wii sports

2. Sims

3. nintendo dogs

4. World of warcraft

5. GTA 3

I agree with this in a lot of ways, because I don't see how anyone can deny the fact that the casual market is where it's at these days. That's not to say that the market is lacking hardcore gaming experiences (a term I've grown to hate with a passion, but I digress), but if you think that any of the games OP listed will have as much of an impact on the gaming industry as, say, Wii Sports, you're nuts. Even Facebook/Myspace apps are going to be very influential in future progression of video games rather anyone likes it or not.

Please Perfect Dark would not be near as known if it was not for the Halo haters. Please do not act like Perfect Dark has anything close to the impact on games in general that Halo has had from online.FPS in general, to quality. I am not saying Perfect Dark is bad but only someone looking for a reason to bash Halo would ever say something like that.

How, oh how, would Perfect Dark "not be near as known if it was not for the Halo haters"? According to my calendar (that would be the same one that says 2010 started three days ago; is this the same calendar you follow?), Perfect Dark was out, well-received, and well-known long before Halo haters even existed.

shoryuken_
You didn't play Half Life 2 during the time it was released then. Uncharted 2 COULD be influential in a way, but we must wait at least 5 years to see the kinds of games that are produced. If they are much more refined, cinematic, have incredible voice acting and superior layered animations AND feature many levels where the player move and be affected by the moving level through animation, then we can say that Uncharted 2 was really the first game to bring all that into one. If this happens, it doesn't mean that Uncharted 2 is the most influential, but it does mean that it was influential in some way and we should stop and say: "Ok, this was the game that really caught the eye and is directly responsible for developers trying to produced more improved and refined games with things that we don't usually see (like players playing through the collapsing building and being affected depending on their position/movement or where they are standing).

None of the games are top 5 most important games though. Which is what the purpose of this thread is. Which games shifted the gaming spectrum. 5 hardcore games? Hardly.

You need to remove Uncharted 2 from the list. It is just the average game that only has its high production values to make it important. Strip it from the game and compare what is left from it and compare it to other games and it's importance almost vanishes.

You should replace it with something like The Sims or one of those other life simulators that are so popular nowadays in social webs.

I agree that these games have set standards for their genres, so in that way they are important, "revolutionary" games. None have actually changed gaming significantly, they have just shown people how to do a game right.

I'm addressing his post, not the TC's. Half Life 2 did do significant things to gaming. Uncharted 2 easily has the potential too. I didn't straight up say that these are the most influential games.

Halo mostly had impact because it was successful. In a way it popularised the FPS genre on the consoles to an extent not seen before, but in mere terms of gameplay, it did few things that hadn't been done before. It built upon and optimalised existing concepts, for which it should be recognised, but people who act like good FPS shooters didn't exist before Halo need a reality check.

In the context of its time, Perfect Dark was of near unsurpassable quality, though not revolutionary either in terms of gameplay. That honour goes to Goldeneye, which played a huge part in the 'delinearisation' of the FPS genre in general. For one of the first times, especially on a console, an FPS level no longer consisted of finding the key and unlocking the door until the end of the level was reached, but of certain specific objectives that needed to be completed in order to get to the next level.

According to my calendar (that would be the same one that says 2010 started three days ago; is this the same calendar you follow?), Perfect Dark was out, well-received, and well-known long before Halo haters even existed.

Pretty much the only time Perfect dark one is erver mentioned is when PS3 fanboys try to bash Halo. Perfect Dark and Goldeneye are known pretty much now both because they are use for the Halo bashers mainly Sony fanboys. Halo did FAR ...let me say that again (Far!) more to console and FPS in general then either of those games.

**Please know the difference between your personal opinion and important.**

The fact that the PlayStation 3 is a failure doesn't change the fact that its greatest game, "UNCHARTED 2", is brilliance at its finest.

You say to please know the difference between personal opinion and important and yet you yourself don't seem to know this either. You say to leave fanboyism out of it and then you have a line like that right off the bat?

This list may be a good one for "amazing/impressive games of the decade" (personal opinion dictates here though) but its by no means a list of "important" games.

As other of said there were a heck of a lot more "important" games that visually sucked and you probably wouldn't even touch a gun in. As others of said, Uncharted 2 hasn't even been out long enough. The only games I agree with are GTA III and WoW. Things like the Sims or even Bejeweled take much higher precidence over many of those. What about Guitar Hero? There was practically no such thing as the music genre prior to its release (minusa fewobscuritiesand things like DDR), seeing the giant wall of guitars at any game shop should hint at that one.

I agree with Halo and GTA being on there. Theyrevolutionized games but i dont get how Uncharted 2 is one of the most important games of the decade when its only been out 2 months and never introduced anything new to gaming. But im not saying that it isnt a great game

Wow, good call. I completely agree with all your picks. I think Halo: CE is the most influential game of the last decade, esp. considering its impact not only on gaming but culture at large.

5.UNCHARTED 2: AMONG THIEVES

[Influence on Gaming: 10]

That makes no sense considering the game has not inspire any game developer or anything yet because it was launched a few weeks ago. Maybe you are right with the high influence, but in a year or so, not today.

Also agreed... In terms of most "importance" Wii Sports, Sims and Nintendogs changed the entire decade.

Uncharted 2, as good as it is, hasn't influenced anything, whatsoever and probably never will.

Influential=/=most sales, espicially when said game is bundled with a console.

How are people saying Halo doesn't belong on the list?? Its obviously the most important game there because without it the Xbox wouldn't even exist. Who knows how this gen would have turned out had microsoft pulled out of the console wars because of the absence of Halo. Things could be DRASTICALLY different.
