Insomniac Games said a while back that it was "flattered" that the spherical worlds of Mario Galaxy were inspired by Ratchet and Clank.

Official Nintendo Magazine UK asked the father of Mario what he thought about Insomiac's comments in a recent interview, to be published in the next issue (Issue 25).

Miyamoto said he was "surprised" by Insomniac's comment. "In terms of the spherical worlds and anti-gravity," he went on to explain, "we had the original idea as soon as we finished the development of Mario 64 and had been experimenting with it for many years, even on the N64."

"It's not an idea we got from anywhere else," adds Miyamoto, before adding: "I'm sorry but I have to admit that I've never seen the game in question. Is it a PC game?"

Miyamoto learns from no-one.

He does play them.
Together with his wife.

Miyamoto's strength is to look outside of the box, so not knowing games can be a good thing.
He made Mario vs Donkey kong and Super Mario Bros that way.
He made those games without even knowing gaming.

If I spent 3+ years making a game I wouldn't play mine. Can you imagine some of the misery these guys go throw when a few lines of code won't work and they have to start pushing their timetables back?

Now as for Miyamoto's comment if he is honest about it, than LOL

It's not his job to "research". It's his job to make amazing games - and he rarely ever achieves anything less than greatness.

Remember that little tech demo with 128 Marios they showed when GameCube was reveled?

The Marios were running around a spherical planet. Miyamoto has stated in a previous interview that the "128 Marios" Project evolved into Pikmin and SMG.

I'm pretty sure that miyamoto got the idea from this:

behold King Kai's planet from dragonball z

a lot of japanese video game developers have a lot of love for both dragonball and dragonballz. Remember that Akira toriyama invented the idea of shooting power from wrists, which capcom promptly used in street fighter.

If you play galaxy there are obvious planets that are references to king kai's planet. There are some challenges where I used the strategy that Goku used to catch Bubbles (the monkey). I mean that literally too. I was like 'why dont I just do what Goku did!'

only reason i even heard of ratchet and clank games was due to the funny commercials they overplayed in the past. i dont like the ratchet and clank tod commercials. they should of just kept the way they advertised the older ratchet games.

heres an example

You don't know that. Thus, FAIL. I had "heard" of Ratchet and Clank, but before Tools of Destruction I knew very little about it. How does R&C sell in Japan? He could very well not have heard of it. Besides, Miyamoto is too busy developing classics to notice franchises like Ratchet and Clank.

I am NOT surprised.

flashattackfina

those are NOT WW sales

R&C 2.93 million sold

R&C2: 2.42 milllion sold

R&C 3: 2.17 million sold

these are world widesales

Good post on Worldwide sales. I was just wondering where SER69 got his numbers from. And everyone in the industry has heard of Ratchet and Clank. Miyamoto was flat out lying when he said that. Even my wife knows about Ratchet and Clank and she has zero interest in games.

People should probably realize that Shiggy in all most likely cases doesn't care what the competition does. All those years when Sonic went head to head with Mario did Shiggy one time take anything from Sega Sonic to a game changing effect?

Shiggy doesn't care about what everyone else does. His hand in the creation of the Wii is proof of that. He only cares about his vision. His vision doesn't involve others ideas it involves things more like walking in his Garden and um wierd crap like that.

I didn't know R&C existed until I came here actually. It was around April when someone said Mario Galaxy looked better than R&C (funny thread).
