Poll Kevin VanOrd vs Jeff Gerstmann (87 votes)

Kevin VanOrd 33%
Jeff Gerstman 67%

Which Gamespot lead writer gets your vote in a contest between the two.

The Basics

Jeff Gerstmann's been at GS since the beginning, and after surviving the great controversy of giving Zelda: Twilight Princess an 8.8/10, he got terminated after giving an unflattering review of Kane and Lynch Dead Men. After, he founded the website GiantBomb. He is arguably THE face of video game journalism.

Then, there's Kevin VanOrd, who started off in GS, as the new guy, but after the original Gamespot crew left, he worked his way up the ranks and restored the reputation of the website. Today, he is still their chief editor and has done a fine job.

My Opinion

I wholeheartedly concede that Kevin is a much better writer, and when it came to the technical aspect of writing reviews, Gerstmann was average at best. Jeff was more like a video game fan whereas Kevin was moreso the journalist. Jeff often analyzed the mechanics of gameplay and wrote the reviews in context of recommending it to a friend. Kevin often writes his reviews as social commentary weighing the game's artistic merits, like an editorial on a newspaper.

So yeah, Kevin was the better reviewer, but Jeff simply represented everything I liked the most about Gamespot. Particularly, the era I have fond memories with. The company (Alex, Ryan, Brad, and friends) he kept. His casual style, or his unabashed honesty. Kevin feels like a highly esteemed (though still very humble) professional writer, but Jeff felt like a friend.

So, I'll go with Jeff on this one.

They have different tastes. Kevin VanOrd is very big into RPGs, story-driven games, and artsy experiences. He's my favorite reviewer currently on the site.

Jeff is way more awesome/funny but his taste in games is terribad. VanOrd is one of the few GS writers that doesnt completely suck.

honestly, i never really seen/read any of Jeff reviews. Not even when he worked here at GS. I never went to Giant Bomb, so I dont know what they do over there, dont care to find out.

VanOrd is a really good and honest reviewer, always has been. Probably the only good reviewer left in GS, too bad they barely use him for reviews.

Kevin is a superior writer(I would even bet Jeff wouldn't disagree with that), both kind of easy as far as critics, but Jeff is more entertaining on a mic, quick look, during a podcast, etc. Regardless I don't mind reading a Van Ord write up as he tends to come off genuine. Don't ever really agree with him, but by the low ass bar set by other game critics, he's pretty chill. Would rather listen to Gertsmann talk games though, that shit isn't even close.

I perfer Kevin, Jeff would often say funny Things but rarely have alot of good points as to why he liked or disliked a game. And he had a focus on one area of gaming and ignored all other venues of games (logical he was brought in to review console games originaly), which he still often feels like doing. That is ok if you know what you are going into, but if you are to explain about any given game on any given platform I prefer Kevin.

When that is said, Jeff is the better showman, where as Kevin lacks behind his own Words.

All in all they are likely some of the better in the industry, and Jeff certainly is the more influential.

I would pick Brad over Jeff I think, And ofcourse Kasavin pretty much stands as THE best reviewer EVER.

I tend to find it odd that we don't have alot of great reviewers anymore :\ we used to have alot.

I don't like them. They don't know how to review games, Not saying they are bad writers, it's just I tend to not agree with either guys review of video games.

I have very different tastes then either of those 2 guys so I might still read a review of theirs, but I tend to take them all with a grain of salt because I already know they hate the games I like, and overrate the games I hate.

If it was up to me I would have gave Zelda TP an 8/10.

Kevin Vanord is by far the greatest asset GS has right now, the greatest bulwark of journalistic credibility this site has had in years. I'm not saying this because i intend to lick his boots, there is nothing for me to attain there, thats just how i feel about it. I've been dissapointed by the rating and review system many times, but more often than not i've ended up agreeing with Van0rds opinions and editorials.

So, Kevin all the way.

Kevin is the only decent reviewer left in this website. Auch,Major props for actually losing weight :) (unlike good ol Jeff, 20 years in games industry,20 years being a BigMac. He is still very awesome, since body physique doesnt decide who is better at writing)

But i voted for Jeff,he is the pinnacle of reviewing games. When someone says 'VG reviewer' , i instantly think of JG.He is personality and very influential too. It doesnt take much thought that the site went down after he left GS. I would love to be a giantbomber, but idk, despite having all the best faces (ShoeMaker,Alex Pablo Navvaro, etc) i cant get used to that site. Not to mention the 5* is just too crippling as a review system.

Jeff.

Kevin is better at writing reviews, but that's not everything that counts. The greatest quality any journalist can have is integrity. It's something that affects even the professional's working environment.

I think Kevin is professional and impartial, but I can't measure to what extent. But with Jeff I easily can, especially since he refused to change his K&L review back in 2007.

That episode was so big at the time that it's like GS suffered a major reform after that. And the site is now a lot less accountable for it's work than before.

I guess that's enough to vote for Jeff. That's significance that goes beyond his work.

Neither is better or worst. They have their own opinions and they don't represent anyone but themselves.

I think they both write good reviews and are very honest and have very legitimate objective and subjective points of view.

Kevin doesn't bring in the traffic though. McShea and Petit do because of their radical scores and reasoning behind some reviews.

Kevin is too honest and transparent. He even did live streams of games like Guild Wars 2 and MOH Warfighter so you could hear his thoughts as he played
