Wowza.. we knew it was around 155ish, but this is the first time we got an official confirmed number. Do you think the Switch can overtake it at this point, SW? It's getting close, could be 50/50.

Ol Lyin Ryan at it again. Just one more for the road it seems. PS2 did good since was such a cheap DVD Player, it was a great gimmick. Plus it was sold at insanely discounted prices. But Switch will still beat it even though it faces more competition with the rise of mobile and PC gaming. And Switch won't need a price cut or to sell to terrorist organizations to launch missiles like PS2 did. Sony always relying on gimmicks, such a sad company.

So does that suggest that between 2012 and 2024 an estimated 5 million new ps2s were sold world wide? I didn't realize Sony was still producing the console!? Or are they suggesting their counting was off back in 2012?

Guess I'm asking where the added console sales came from?

@TheEroica: Sony saw Switch was about to pass it and decided to use Lyin Ryan to push out one more.

Selling less consoles these days and games getting much more expensive to make. Certainly seems that expanding beyond confining games to a singular device is the path forward.

ConsoleUnits sold
PlayStation 2155 million (as of March 31, 2012)[43][44]
Xbox24 million (as of May 10, 2006)[11][12]
GameCube21.74 million (as of September 30, 2010)[13]
Dreamcast9.13 million (as of September 6, 2002)[14]

Meanwhile, Switch is at 140 million, PS5 is at 55 million, XSX/XSS somewhere around 30 million. And we're only halfway through the gen. Not really sure what spin people are trying to put on consoles 😄

Switch is 140 across two generations. But, that undermines your agenda.

And for a good reason at the time. I remember DVD players were so expensive, everyone pretty much purchased PS2 mainly for the DVD player as it was way cheaper to afford, and playing games to most people was a bonus but overall, some people just got it to use the DVD player.

Yea, and what did that 160.000.000 system have? It had something something called video games. And those video games weren't all live service garbage that you cancelled, and now we have nothing to look forward to on the horizon. He blows. Please gtfo and never come back.

I am not sure I can believe anything Jim Ryan says anymore. He lied to our faces about generations, the Sony/ABK deal, free upgrades from PS4 to PS5 versions, as well as saying Miles Morales, GT7, God of War Ragnarök, and Horizon Forbidden West were only possible on the PS5 before showing the PS4 versions.

I am really happy to see him leaving the company.

It's only a matter of time before the Switch catches the PS2. Switch is outpacing the PS2 without even a major price drop. When Switch does eventually get that price drop, that should help close the gap.

@SolidGame_basic: To be fair, Switch competed with PS4/X1 so you should cut the Switch numbers in half (give half of them to the PS4/X1 gen and the other half to the PS5/XS gen)

still that's 155 million vs 210 million and there are still 3 years or more of the gen.

Plus, I imagine PC gaming has more than doubled, if not tripled in that time. And the mobile gaming market has probably increased by a factor of 100 and minimum. I cannot imagine more than 2-3 million mobile gamers around 2006 and cannot imagine less than 200-300 million as of 2024.

The PS2 was in production from 2000-2013. The Switch has been in the market for 7 years.

@SolidGame_basic: I was thinking of what gens they belong in.

You can place the PS2 sales in the PS2 generation, but you cannot post all of Switch sales into one generation as it is a cross generational device.

N64 - PS1 gen

GC - PS2 gen

Wii - PS3 gen

Wii-U - inbetween PS3 and PS4

Switch - inbetween PS4 and PS5

"Switch 2" - inbetween PS5 and PS6

Switch is at 140 million now but I don't see it hitting 160 million if they launched the Switch 2 at a competitive price (say $299 or less) tomorrow.

My prediction: Switch 2 release (very) shortly after they announces Switch surpasses PS2 sales figures.

PS3 launched in 2006. So then let’s compare sales of PS2 from 2000 to 2006. So, 103.69 million
GameCube had 21.34 million from 2001 to 2007.
Xbox had 24 million from 2001 to 2006.
Dreamcast was 9 million. So total is about 158 million.

PS5/XSX launched in November 2020. So for 3.5 years, it’s about 85 million together.
Switch sales from 2020 to 2023 were about 86 million.
So altogether, around 170.

PS2 sold around 40-50M after the PS3 released. Switch could still pass 160M after the Switch 2 releases. But they'd have to drop the Switch price so that it's less than the Switch 2.

Nintendo, wake up! A new goal post for you to pass!

If the Switch ends up selling more than 160, this beating the PS2, I'll be so happy! Earth will heal, when Nintendo surpasses the PS2.

Hope this happens. Then, six months later, Nintendo hires him. Now that would be the juice i always wanted to see.

@Jag85: Yeah the reason I guess was the PS2 was selling for around $150 or even $99 after the PS3 launch (I live in Norway where prices have always been higher than the US, but the PS2 was goddamn dirt cheap) while the PS3 cost $599.

If Nintendo dropped the price of a Switch to < $199 and the Switch 2 launches for > $599 then yeah the Switch 1 will still sell like hot cakes for sure.

I doubt the Switch 2 will launch for such a high price. Switch launched for $299 and has remained at that price ever since. But due to inflation, Switch 2 could launch for $399 this time around. If Switch drops to $199, that would be half the price of a Switch 2, so the Switch should continue selling well after that.

Sure, Sony salesman.

Also, where did he "confirm" that? Your link says nothing else than that he confirmed it. No sources or anything.

What an incredibly dumb thread.

he was CEO and with the company for 30 years, I doubt he would just blurt out a random number. Plus, we know that back in 2012, the number was 155, so it’s not unreasonable to think that there were additional units sold after that.

Man that console sold gangbusters back in the day. Really solidified PS as the go to console. Only the wii has somewhat disrupted it since (though they also targeted different parts of the market).

If nintendo can come out with a 149.99 SKU of the switch though: that would sell like mad i think. I just had a quick look and it looks like the Switch Lite is selling for around €210. So still a bit of cutting would be needed. But that would definitely get the switch over the line i think.

...Not that Nintendo care about that. All they want to see is their platform printing money....which the Switch is currently doing....a lot.

I believe either it's slip of tongue or he's counting the PS2 that were built in to the TVs or something. Official Sony numbers still put it at 155M even in their latest report.

Love the goalpost shift- "Switch will never outsell PS4" to "Let's see it outsell the PS2"

Real talk- check out this article.

4 years into its life the PS2 had sold over 70 million units and the price was cut to $150. At that price or lower it sold 80+ million units!? Good for them.

I bought a new one in 2013 ... so they were still selling em then.

It's sad that a lame system like the Switch will be the best selling ever when it's all said and done.
