An HD remake won't save a console. If it continues like this after Mario, Prime and other IP's come out, then Nintendo should start worrying

Good luck seeing a new Metroid Prime before 2016, and thats being optimistic. Ā Retro is occupied with Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze (which they just delayed till 2014). Ā Hell, the new Zelda game is rumored to be late 2015 at the earliest. Ā

Nintendo was so confident that a 10 year old title would be a system seller for their Wii U.Ā

A part of me is thankful that Nintendo is getting this response with the Wii U

Maybe they'll rethink how they design consoles for their next one.

I have no doubt that they're over there completely baffled as to why they can't sell this system. Ā They have no clue, the consequence of living in their own little bubble.

It's a HD remake of a Nintendo game, on a system only Nintendo fans own, and those Nintendo fans played that Nintendo game when they loyally bought the Gamecube :P

The PS3, with a much larger library, sells roughly the same amount every month as Wii U. It just shows that Japan isn't big on consoles and almost exclusively care about handhelds.

The PS3 already sold 9.5 million though, and is at the end of it's lifespan. The WiiU is just over a million and is at the start of it's lifespan. Pretty different situations.

Of course they are, but PS3 didn't sell like gang busters early on either in Japan, or anywhere else. Having good software is always the catalyst for system sales. But still, Japan is mostly a handheld gaming nation, and bulky consoles will sell less there than in other places.

Some people , mega sheeps , were so excited with WW and thought that would push sales like no other... Ahhh , little sheeps. You think people will keep buying rehashes and one of the same shit every gen ? I dont think so. Miracles like Wii happens only once. Now about software sales. 7 Sony games in top 10 , more than impressive. 3DS winning easily hardware sales. Nintendo should be in panic mode right now console wise.

Tbh, the Japanese haven't been buying home consoles this gen. Even the PS3 sales are farly horiffic. PS2 sold far far more month on month there. And it seems like no one wants the Vita, six thousand versus the 3DS XL's ninety three thousand, that's insane.

At least the Wii U is only half the PS3s.

No wonder Sony are in no rush to release the PS4 in Japan.

Wii U sold slightly more than PSP with WW bundle ( free download also ) along with price cut. PS3 is already 8 years old. Vita compared to 3DS doing super bad though Wii U selling as much as PSP in Japan ?!! Rofl big time

But it didn't rely on a gimmick like the Wii, maybe there just aren't enough Japanese centric games this gen.

Apart from the 1st party Nintendo and Sony studios, and one or two others like Kojima and Platinum Games, most Japanese devs seem to be doing most of their good work on handhelds now. Not sure whether devs switched and Japanese gamers followed, or vice versa, but it sure seems like the Japanese gaming culture is about handhelds now. Sony aren't even releasing the PS4 there til next year. That would've sounded like madness a short time ago.

I think that the number of relatively well known video game companies in Japan dwarf any other country except for the United States. You've got SEGA, Nintendo, Platinum Games, From Software, Cave, Arc System Works, and so on. I can't come up with any other country that comes even remotely close the number of devs that Japan houses.Ā

Not bad for one country, people usually forget that in their 'Japan vs. the entire fvcking western world' comparisons.Ā

I'm not mocking Japan or anything, it's just compared to the PS2 which they pretty much owned (barring a few big western franchises like GTA), they have been pretty quiet this gen on consoles.

My point is that their output may have lessened (JRPGs has took a serious nosedive, for example), but the west has bloomed this generation on consoles, more so than in the previous generation, and that's what makes it look more dramatic than it really is.Ā

Yup. I'm not trying to make any point beyond Japanese devs and gamers seem more handheld focussed now, which kinda explains low WiiU sales and Sonys decision to delay PS4 there in favour of the more console focussed West.

What a freakin waste of a one year head start :? Nintendo would have been in a much better position had they waited, made the U much closer in performance ( GPU, ram ) to X1 / PS4 and launched with a full stable of 1st & 3rd party games. Ohh well, I can hears teh cheaps now, bu but 3DS, yeah, I know but I'm no big fan of handhelds sooo. :P

That said, some day when the U with WWHD packed in is like 149.99, I'll enjoy sailing the big blue in Celda HD. :D

Somehow I'm glad to read this. Hopefully Nintendo finally realizes that releasing a port of an old game won't help them move units.

No one but Nintendo were stupid enough to think an HD Remaster is going to sell systems. They're desperate at this point.
