Japan: Wii U Sells 5K With Wind Waker HD

This weeks Japanese software and hardware sales charts are incourtesy of Media Create. The Nintendo 3DS remains the dominant format selling 134,244 units this week. The sales were no doubt helped by Monster Hunter 4 which shifted an impressive 213,000 units. However, the Wii U is still struggling as the console sold 5,909 units, which placed it just behind the PlayStation Vita this week. The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD sold 31.154 units and was placed seventh in the charts. Heres the Japanese software and hardware charts.

Good luck seeing a new Metroid Prime before 2016, and thats being optimistic.  Retro is occupied with Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze (which they just delayed till 2014).  Hell, the new Zelda game is rumored to be late 2015 at the earliest.

The PS3, with a much larger library, sells roughly the same amount every month as Wii U. It just shows that Japan isn't big on consoles and almost exclusively care about handhelds.

Tbh, the Japanese haven't been buying home consoles this gen. Even the PS3 sales are farly horiffic. PS2 sold far far more month on month there. And it seems like no one wants the Vita, six thousand versus the 3DS XL's ninety three thousand, that's insane.

At least the Wii U is only half the PS3s.

No wonder Sony are in no rush to release the PS4 in Japan.

Apart from the 1st party Nintendo and Sony studios, and one or two others like Kojima and Platinum Games, most Japanese devs seem to be doing most of their good work on handhelds now. Not sure whether devs switched and Japanese gamers followed, or vice versa, but it sure seems like the Japanese gaming culture is about handhelds now. Sony aren't even releasing the PS4 there til next year. That would've sounded like madness a short time ago.locopatho

I think that the number of relatively well known video game companies in Japan dwarf any other country except for the United States. You've got SEGA, Nintendo, Platinum Games, From Software, Cave, Arc System Works, and so on. I can't come up with any other country that comes even remotely close the number of devs that Japan houses. 

Not bad for one country, people usually forget that in their 'Japan vs. the entire fvcking western world' comparisons.

I'm not mocking Japan or anything, it's just compared to the PS2 which they pretty much owned (barring a few big western franchises like GTA), they have been pretty quiet this gen on consoles.locopatho

What a freakin waste of a one year head start :? Nintendo would have been in a much better position had they waited, made the U much closer in performance ( GPU, ram ) to X1 / PS4 and launched with a full stable of 1st & 3rd party games. Ohh well, I can hears teh cheaps now, bu but 3DS, yeah, I know but I'm no big fan of handhelds sooo. :P

That said, some day when the U with WWHD packed in is like 149.99, I'll enjoy sailing the big blue in Celda HD. :D
