It's going to be a while before PS5 comes out, agreed?

PS4 is killing it. Don't know why Sony would want a successor to come out that would only eat away at their sales. I'm thinking PS5 won't be announced until 2020 at the earliest. And maybe it will come out 2021. Which is a good thing in my opinion. It gives them time to get better hardware. Your thoughts, SW? Or is it coming sooner?

I don't know, but I certainly hope you are wrong. I hate how weak this gen is. I want to get some decent hardware to reduce the gap between my rig and the things I "have to" own to play its exclusives.

It is in Sony’s best interest to delay it as long as possible. It is also best for gamers to delay it because we want a bigger leap than what we got from PS3/360 to PS4/Xbone.

I don’t want the PS5 to be a slightly better Xbone X. I want PS5 to slaughter everything. Be like 10 times better than Xbone X.

The "leaps" are only going to get smaller. The technology is plateauing.

Don't know and don't care when will PS5 release. When Sony is ready to announce PS5, then I'll care but for now, I'm still enjoying this gen what it has to offer.

Yeah, probably a ways off. As well as the system is still selling + these relatively recent upgrades, I doubt Sony or MS are in any real rush to pull the trigger on new hardware.

On one hand, I think it's a good thing. I'm not really thrilled about buying a new console considering I've gotten such little use out of the PS4 as is. Keep this gen going plz.

On the other hand, whether some PC gamers like to admit it or not, consoles are the baseline that the industry targets. So a new run of consoles does benefit the PC crowd, even if the "leaps" are more like steps these days. Raising the lowest common denominator is always a good thing.

Not too fussed about it either way tbh. Most of my favorite games are far from being technical powerhouse material anyways.

Yeah, it would be a dick move by Microsoft and Sony to release mid-gen upgrades only to release full next-gen consoles before they're even a year or two old.

No idea if anyone shares my opinion, but Sony should leave the X86 architecture. Mid/high end tech develops too fast and is expensive, hence the consoles end up with weak shit. Do there own thing and this issue gets alleviated somewhat.

@SolidGame_basic: it's in no one's interest really, the truth is both the PS4 and Xbox one were under cooked, the existence of the PRO and the X is pretty much a testament to that fact,( although that was more evident on the Xbox side of things,)Nintendo is once again hitting a broad base of both core nintendo and more casual fans who enjoy Nintendo for what it is more than anything else(so they're not going to change anything). The Mid gen upgrades (the oldest of which is only just over a year old) represent the level of performance most people expected at launch, now both Sony and MS would find themselves on the receiving end of consumer backlash if they suddenly tried to shift into another hardware generation. A 2013 launch with a 2016/17 upgrade followed by a 2019 new gen doesn't sound good, 4-5 years past the upgrade consoles sounds like a safer bet, So 2021 sounds about right.

Looking at some of the stuff going on in the PC space is informative, if you look at the likes of Star Citizen you get an idea of where enthusiast level gaming is headed and that means even with optimization the next consoles are going to need some serious hardware and will still have to be affordable as a piece of consumer electronics.

since the whole of Sony relies on the PS4's success, when sales start to show a downward trend then they will have to strategically plan the PS5 release so that revenues from the gaming division don't drop significantly and they can cover their R&D and marketing and not let the company dip into the red, it might mean a premature release, but even if system sales drop though, they make a lot on game sales too, and will continue to do so the larger their install base gets, so that's probably a bigger thing to focus their transition around, but they also don't want to release too early and allow their competitors to leapfrog their 9th gen system in terms of power and features, in some ways it's best they wait as long as they can if they can manage it, keep their cards close to their chest, see what their competitors are up to

if anything, I think Sony will focus their next plans around competing with Nintendo, while I don't think they can really go toe-to-toe with Nintendo with any portable system, I think at least attempting too will at least carry the benefit of helping split the Japanese third party developers so that Nintendo doesn't end up with a monopoly of third party Japanese support, that kind of support has kind of been the largest differentiating factor of what the PlayStation brand has over Xbox but if Nintendo steals that then the PS will just have to make due with its own first party line-up, which still has decent offerings but hasn't been as strong as they once were

maybe their next fiscal report will answer this question, frankly I'd focus their report around seeing just how much the whole of Sony relies on gaming division revenues to keep their heads above water, if the other segments have started to strengthen on their own and they don't rely as much on gaming division then Sony has an opportunity to ride out this gen a little longer, the less likely that is though the more pressing it will be not let their momentum in gaming take any hit

I think yes. Considering how weak the current systems launched, a system that launches somewhat decent this or next year could lead to systems capable of real 4k at a stable framerate (hopefully 60Hz). Sure, probably not at maxed Pc settings, but maybe something around a 1070 or maybe even 1080 would be nice.

The cows got a long uphill road of super salty tears being the much weaker console for the next four years. :P

Yea, 2020 at the earliest. I'm starting to think they may even hold off till 2021.

PS4's momentum is just too strong and it isn't showing any signs of slowing down. It would be stupid to halt its momentum with a PS5 announcement.

Pretty much this. I'm totally happy where were at now, this gen isn't nothing to brag about but I'm totally fine without both Sony/MS announcing next-gen consoles for a very long time. I say year 2022-2024 is a start.

The longer they leave it the more likely it'll be the next "consoles" will be streaming boxes with a subscription service. They've already trained you with the pay for online games thing, now digital games are growing in popularity in the console space. Streaming is the next logical step for them to make. It's casual/mainstream friendly, has low running costs (both MS and Sony already have the infrastructure, even if internet speeds aren't adequate in all areas) and creates maximum profit.

If they do bring out another round of game consoles you can guarantee it'll just be an upgrade on the Pro/One.

@SolidGame_basic: It takes years to plan out the next console. Sony isn't going to wait until PS4 slows down. In 2019, I highly doubt PS4 will continue selling well... People know ps5 is coming soon. I still say fall 2019.

@NoodleFighter: How about 3 years old? The Pro was definitely not forced on anyone. And really isn't needed. So you have 60+ million base PS4 owners ready for ps5. People aren't use to upgrading their console within 3 years like Pro was. So they are still holding onto the base PS4 for the normal 6 year gen cycle. I know people say it'll upset people with a Pro.. but that's not that many, and I'm one of them, except I'm not gonna be upset. The base PS4 can't possible last more than 2 more years. All the consoles seem to have trouble with 60fps on AAA games. And native 4k is hit or miss. I just don't see how they can last longer than a traditional console cycle... Even with the Pro.

They won't release anything until the PS4 sales start to drop significantly. And even then, I can't see that they'll be able to get away with another "3D Gaming Machine + Media Player + Same Controller" all that easily.

I can't see Sony going another 2 years with just PS4 and PS4 Pro. 2020 will mark 7 years of the PS4 existence and 4 years of the Pro's existence. 2020 sounds like the perfect year to bring out all new hardware to sell in the 399-499 range. I think it will be a brand new console and not a "mid-gen" update again.

It doesn't make business sense or from a technological progression sense to make a PS5 before 2020. Anything before then will fail to be spectacular in any way and risks being eclipsed rather quickly by emerging technologies.

O think 2019/20 would be perfect. These consoles already proved to be incredibly capable, with great looking exclusives and most fast paced games (shooters, racers, fighters, etc) running at 60fps.

All i want (if i buy the PS5) is full BC with PS4. There are so many good games on the system that would be stupid from Sony to not take advantage of that.
