Is there really a difference between spending $400 and $500 on gaming console?

The way I see it, if you can afford the PS4, then you can afford the XBone! I just don't see the huge discrepency in which the price of either console should be a determining factor. At the end of the day, shouldn't it be about.....

1. What console your friends are getting

2. Which console has the games you want to play the most

3. Which controller your prefer

4. Which online community you like best

I simply don't get the mindset that the Xbone is so unbelievably expensive when just 7 years ago, people bought up the PS3 even though it was $100 more than the Xbone and had absolutely NO GAMES!!

on one hand you get a Game System for $500 that has you pay an Extra $60 a Year to hook up your console to the internet and access features on the system that should have been free.

on the other you get a Game System that's $100 cheaper and while you can pay $60 to play your games online, most of the features are available to you from the get go and Free to Play games are that, Free to play, even Online games.

There is, if you're a casual gamer you'll probably buy the cheapest one, that has all the multiplats.

$100 and a 50% power difference. It is actually a $125 difference because you need a play and charge kit for Xbone controller.

If you are actually buying it yourself oh yeah that's a huge difference.

Yes, even in 2013, $100 is a big deal.

And the fact that the hardware in the PS4 is BETTER than the XB1, it's even MORE important.

Consider that $100 could be used to pay for a game plus the bullshit pay for online fee or extra controller

i game mainly on pc so i am all for paying more for better quality, that has always been my mindset, but in this case i just don-t see any justification for a higher price, xbone console is inferior in hardware and costs more, and whats more, this and every other generation playstation has always had the better games.

Ok at launch it's 25% more as base price. Over the course of a gen, even the first year, after a few accessories, possibly another controller and of course games, it's maybe 5% more in the long run.

With regard to the original question, it's not the money but the perceived value.

X1 is more expensive and less capable (or so it's perceived spec wise) plus it comes with an unnecessary and unwanted device in Kinect.  Then you have XBL gold which is perceived more as a barrier to playing MP games rather than a gateway to great free & exclusive content (PS+ differs) and the PR disaster MS caused by not focusing on their core demographic when debuting the console.

It's not so much about the money - it's just a convenient excuse to stick it to the man at MS.
