is PS4 ending the generation horribly like the wii and 360 did?

Cows always praise Sony saying that it continues to deliver software all the way to the end of the generation when starting a new one.

The wii pretty much had nothing after 2011. the xbox 360 also dried up towards the end which cows said led to sony "catching up". wiiU was also dead by 2016?

Now in this gen where PS4 is the most dominant they seem to be doing the same thing.

-Pulling out of E3

-cancelling playstation experience

-no last of us at the game awards

seemingly trying to cut the PS4's life. Most likely to launch a new console in 2019/2020

what do you say? will this hurt sony's repuation? will this cause less initial sales of PS5?

the video title is what prompted me to do this thread. you dont have to watch it. i didnt watch it either :P

Unlike 360 and Wii. Ps4 users have many games to look forward too at the end of the gen. But yeah dont know what is beyond 2019.

Probably because Sony is now focusing on PS5 event and anything not currently announced is likely being developed for Next-Gen as we speak. Most of us PS4 owners have seen this coming, Sony is trying to build up PS5 hype. While I really don't care what Sony does nowadays, they have won this gen in an overkill way, so it isn't like it will hurt them at all. Maybe MS has a chance to try and take Sony by surprise would be something to look forward to as competition really heats up in next-gen.

I get the impression 2020 will be the unveiling. But I agree, any game with a long development cycle will be pushed into the next console cycle I would think.

Who cares about game shows? Are they still releasing software for their product? If the answer is yes, then no they aren't ditching their hardware.

I honestly don't know what they have coming up though. Not because they don't have anything, but I've been paying attention less and less.

The only way that happens is if Last of us 2 and ghosts of whatever don't come to PS4 next year and are saved for the ps5. I doubt that would happen.

1st party games will be coming through 2019, and I'm sure there will be plenty of 3rd parties releasing games for 2020 and beyond. So no, it doesn't' seem to be drying up like Wii that had ridiculous game droughts. Nor is it ending like the 360 which got sidetracked by the stupid Kinect focus.

Sony just isn't doing those shows because they don't want to announce PS5 games before they announce PS5 hardware. It is a little odd they aren't announcing PS5 at E3, but one would assume it will be announced sometime in 2019.

None of those things that were listed will hurt them if they continue to produce great quality games.

Why do they need to show off TLOU2 at The Game Awards? The idea that they need to constantly feed people information isn't necessary; they'll release things whenever they feel ready, and people will jump all over it either way. Ex. How many God of War trailers / gameplay clips did we get before it was released? Besides the launch campaign stuff, we probably only saw 4-5 videos in two years. The same thing can be said about Horizon.

Also, Sony doesn't need to reassure people of their purchase. The PS4 has delivered all generation long, and it doesn't seem like they're slowing down. They still have games like TLOU2, Dreams, Death Stranding, Days Gone and who knows what else in the works.

Nah. Sony is too good for E3. They are enough games to get us off our seats.

Let's not forget the slogan of the PlayStation 4... "Greatness Awaits". There's a reason behind it. You know and I know why.

Probably best they focus on PS5 anyways, their biggest help this gen was how MS messed things up on their end. They might not have such an advantage next time so best they start stacking the deck with launch releases.

No idea honestly, I'm very rarely thinking about next gen at all, and on a side note I did not know those 2 consoles ended "horribly", but I'm not interested in discussing the merits of that statement to be quite honest. The other day I was wondering, what if next gen (for Xbox anyways) was simply a matter of no longer being able to produce all games on the base consoles, and the X becomes the new Base console, and voila, next gen starts.

The X becomes the launch console of next gen, they have other models too so they can offer more choices also(a more powerful X, the Scarlett streaming thing, etc) but 100% percent of the ecosystem features carry over, all your games etc. Isn't that what they are planning anyways, I seem to remember quickly reading an article about that and I know about the 2 consoles Microsoft has in development.

But yeah, big ? for me as far as next gen is concerned and how Sony or Microsoft will do things. It's a bigger question mark for Sony because I have no idea if they are working on some kind of full backwards compatibility, this is something that Microsoft has been a little more open about. Definitely not in a hurry for next gen to start if it means I need to leave something behind from this gen. Need to wait to see the official announcements basically.

On the contrary, it might have one of the biggest bangs at the end of its life, if all of the following games come out in 2019, RIP every other system:

The Last of Us 2

Dreams

That zombie game

Ghost of Tsushima

Death Stranding

Been hearing on twitter that Last of us 2, Ghosts and Death Stranding could be held back for PS5 launch but still release on PS4. So tail end might be slim until Ps5 with some crossover games.

But wouldnt say its horrible since there is still a lot of content from(past/current) Sony 1p and sure in 2019 will gain some hype with Ps5 news, Plus Days Gone looks like it will be a fun game.

Ending "like the wii and 360"?

Lol, don't dare compare that dead trash Wii with X360. In it's final year, 2012, Wii literally only got The Last Story (not even a 2012 game, just a delayed 2011 release!) and a couple of shovelware titles like Mario Party Whatever.

In it's final year, 2013, the X360 got Game Of The Generation contenders like GTAV and Bioshock Infinite, the best Ass Creed (Black Flag), plus literally dozens more AAA and AA titles like Xcom, Diablo III (that game you got half a decade late on Switch LOL), Metro Last Light, etc.

The Wii was only alive 2006 to 2010, X360 lived from 2005 to at least 2014 (Dark Souls II!)

As for PS4, it's releasing dozens of megaton blockbusters, indie hits, exclusives, PC games, everything under the sun. It's closer to the strongest finish a console has ever had, to be frank (assuming 2020 PS5 and Last Of Us II making 2019)

Let's see.. At the end of last gen Microsoft offloaded Gears of War to a third-party, Halo to a tribute band, canned Fable til the end of days as far as we know, and stuck Rare with Kinect.

You know what? Yeah. Nailed it. That's totally what's going to happen with the PS4 between now and 2021.

I could care less how it ends. I get my enjoyment from the console with the few exclusives that interest me like Horizon & God of War. Still have to go and work on Spiderman and I am interested in Days Gone.

Assuming a 2019 launch of the PS5 no i dont think its a horrible end. If anything i think its a good send off. Making 2019 the year of PS5 hype and turning focus that way should lead to more exclusive content to help propel the console when it launches.

Sometimes Sonys long term support can backfire too. They supported the PS3 a bit too well towards the end (though the lifespan of that gen and managing that was generally a mess). They had PS3 games to wrap up when the PS4 was launching and that did the PS4 no favours really at launch. Sony had a big problem getting content out for the PS4 at one stage (remember that E3 where they completely cheesed it? FF7 remake and so on? it was a masterclass in managing E3 when you have nothing to release but you wont get away with it often). Momentum is key in the console business. Also remember that games take 2-3 years to make usually.

Now if its a 2020 release for the PS5....yeah thats a bit of a wait.

as for some of their actions: they are following nintendos lead on this one and are controlling the message more. E3 is a dinosaur. nintendos approach is correct. Sonys approach is correct. Its a relic from a time when magazines were the primary source of gaming news. It's great....sometimes....but its a relic. Like nintendo, Sony have realised that there is no point in making a show if you have nothing to show at that time.

Like with nintendo and their directs, sony will show stuff when its ready to show. right now nintendos 2019 look barren (we only have speculation with very little confirmed) but they will gradually show more as they year progresses...like they have done over the last few years. sony look like they are going the same route.
