GTA series have eveything for a video game, sandbox freeroaming, driving ( Bikes to Jets ), shooting, fashion customisation, mini games, cool radio stations, dating, memorable psychotic protagonists as by story ( Tommy Vercetti to Trevor ), multiplayer. Each and every game critically and commercially successful than the other. With GTA V on next gen systems ( ONE, PS 4, PC) Rockstar got into FPS mode also.

Which video games series offers so much stuff as GTA ? Can we call GTA series king of video games? You can say Saints Row series in recent times, but GTA started it all.

A lot of the features/mini-games which come with a GTA game usually comes off as half baked. San Andreas had this problem. GTA5 had this problem.

It's a good series, but I personally wouldn't consider it the "king".

I don't really feel like there is a king of video games to be honest...

GTA games are great, (except gta4 which was horrible) but I don't look at them and say, "wow, this is the top of the pyramid in game design."

they're just another flavor in the pot.

Ps. Chinatown wars punks a good lot of the console games... Play it if you haven't.

There really isn't a King of video games series at all. King of open-world games? There's certainly an argument for that. It's the most critically acclaimed and best-selling.

They are one of the "crown jewels" of gaming to me, yes. Like Mario with platformers, Civilization with turn based strategy, Street Fighter for fighting games, Fifa/Pro Evo for soccer games, I consider GTA games the pinnacle of the open world genre and must have titles in general.

Yet somehow it is boring. I haven't really cared for a GTA since Vice City. Imo GTA is just Pacman advanced to have maps 10,000 times bigger.

I consider GTA to be a jack of all trades, master of none. They offer a lot of different stuff to do, but they are not the best (or even great) at any of the stuff that they offer.

I don't think there can be a king of videogames; I think there can only be kings of different video games genres like how Mario is the king of platformers, WOW is the king of MMOs, Tetris is the king of puzzle games, etc...

In my opinion, Rock Star and Nintendo are the king game devs. Naughty Dog is pretty close for me.

I know it didn't answer your question, but wanted to throw this out there :P

Golfing is pretty fun in GTA V for a minigame.

More precisely Nintendo EAD. The number 1 developer. Except from IS and their work with Super Metroid. That game is still ahead of everything!

not for me, i've always found them to be terrible games. they play like crap, are designed like crap, have crappy middle school humor, and i don't much care for all the jabs at american culture.

I much prefer a game that does a few things extremely well than a whole bunch of things somewhat ok, but that's just me.

It's perhaps one of the most overrated video games I have ever played. It's up there with FF7 and Skyrim in undeserved praise.

So no, it's not the king of video games.

It's most definitely one of the top franchises in gaming.

I don't personally care for it though. As technical achievements they always blow me away, but as a game I get bored of them very quickly. I still haven't picked up GTA5, not sure if I ever will.

Great franchise but the controls are very clunky. The cover system and shooting in gta 5 are a mess.

I've been playing GTA games for nearly twenty years now, and I'd have to say that the latest entry is probably as close to the "king" of video games as we've yet seen. Certainly there are issues and imperfections with the game for which it takes justified criticism, but it is also maligned simply because it is so popular.

It certainly isn't "the king" in my eyes. IMO, the recent GTA's have been pretty average... They have big detailed worlds, which is cool, but it's mostly all show and no substance a bit for me.

Action/Adventure games can be amazing because they can also have things from other genres all in one game. The GTA games are so fun to play.

As much as I love the games, I wonder why they can't get the controls right.

I'm playing GTA V right now and while it's smoother than IV, it's still feels clunky.

**** no, the gameplay in the franchise is schizo in its quality. Fun series, but grossly overpraised for what amounts to a shallow game that parades itself around as something more meaningful, and that's a load of wank. On balance it's been consistent (sans the part where Grand Theft Auto 4 is dog shit) and has usually provided some impressive technical achievements, and Rockstar's actual open worlds in terms of atmosphere and and all that jazz? Holy shit. But the playing it part is where those games don't hold under any scrutiny, and the plot lines? Only passable in the realm of video games, and even then Rockstar has a tendency to lose the overall plot arc through the middle portion of the game.

If you're into that sort of game primarily, then it's king for you. Luckily we're not in the SNES era anymore, where there is one best game and all others are trying to be better. We're now in a time of complete choice where there is something for everyone.

Is there a King of games... No, and I'm glad.

nope.

open world RPG's are the masterclass of gaming imo. you can make your own character and build various attributes to suit your own playstyle. different classes also add replay value. and looting ftw.

i do like GTAs for what they are, though. laid back action games.

Depends on opinion. It's one the most popular and mainstream games out there (like Fifa and COD) but what about quality? One may prefer it but other may not. I myself don't think it's the best though.

@indzman: GTA is awful garbage. I haven't been able to force myself to finish any of them since San Andreas. Sandbox is kind of fun, but I can't get into GTA4 or 5's storytelling. I get sick of playing darts.

@HalcyonScarlet: wait... I bought a launch SNES and rode that entire generation... There was never a "one game to rule them all" in that generation or on that console... It actually all operated the same way as it does now, except you had to have a magazine sub to get your info, because no interwebz...
