I was just thinking, outside of Halflife and Fear 1, I don't give a shit about story/storytelling when it comes to FPS. This is partly why people enjoy games like painkiller, SS, Hard Reset and the upcoming Shadow Warrior, it's about shooting crap without fluff story in the background without you getting spammed with stupid scripted sequences that reduce player input or bad attempts to make you feels.

Ofcourse not. AI, level design and gunplay are the holy trinity of importance in a FPS.

If you nail those, just give me a background as to what the f*ck i'm doing, and i couldn't care less about anything els.

Actually, I kinda do. In fact, I often find i'm rushing through the gameplay, in order to find out the story.

Honestly I rarely play the singleplayer in a Multiplayer FPS like COD, Battlefield etc.

I played the first level on BF3, and the last COD I completed a mission in was MW2.

Sad 'cause I loved MW1's campaign and got every achievement.

You better like it, everything els apart from the story and artstyle is average as hell. Gunplay in particular is sub-average though.

Hell no, if it has a good one that's a bonus (But that's EXTREMELY rare). Gunplay and AI should come first and foremost for modern games. Then level design, graphics, audio etc. Story is dead last.

I do like a decent story in an fps where possible. I may be in the minority, but I don't want just the fun of shooting people, I want a good story in there too (as rare as that is)

Depends on the game. In Halo or Bioshock, yes, I care about the story. In something like CoD or some other modern military shooter I dont really care.

Only when it drags the game down. The latest Bioshock had horrible pacing thanks to all the story shoved up the gamer's throat. A bad story can ruin a fps, a non-existant can't.

Just in few games it works, Cryostasis is teh shit.

I cared about the story in the Halo trilogy, and it led me to the very well-written books.  If it's a modern shooter, then I usually don't care, because it's always kill the russians or terrorist.

In all action games, different gameplay aspects is what matters most. Obviously a good story enhances every game but is not the priority, so it's not surprising many people don't give a sh*t about it.

I don't give a shit if it's a shitty story. A better story makes for a better game. That's a simple fact.

It used to be about space marines fighting demons/aliens, so no, I don't really care about story in shooters.

Nope. A lot of stories try to progress through cutscenes. The worst part of any story in an FPS game for me is taking me out of first-person view (and losing control) just to watch a cutscene.

The barebones approach of Flying Wild Hog in Hard Reset suits me just fine.

I do. When was the last good FPS that didn't have a decent story at the very least? Shooters tend to get very dull without some kind of interesting narrative to draw me in.

My favorite part in Halo 4 was near the end, facing off against loads of enemies with music swelling because I felt that, as Master Chief, everything was at stake. I had to stop the villain at all costs and I was the only one who could do it. With the story, music, gameplay, everything blended together to make a magnificent moment that would have been fun but not nearly as epic to me.

So I do care about story in the FPS genre.

Yeah, I do. Modern Warfare 3's campaign was so boring that I couldn't play it because the story wasn't good and it's just action set piece after set piece. Seriously, I stopped playing when the helicopter got hit by an RPG, then the pilot just turned the helicopter back around and flied away. What the hell. And don't  even get me started on Battlefield 3. That story was horrible, and I don't mean bad, I MEAN COMPLETELY HORRIBLE. I think a 5 year old can make a better story.

Yes, it never hurts to have a good story. And it's sad when a game like Rage, which has such great gunplay, has such crap story/storytelling/pacing. Of course the mechanics are much more important; I can play a game with good gameplay and a trash story, I can't play one with bad gameplay.

Yes, I do care about story in FPS - my favorite FPS games tend to be the likes of Half Life, Deus Ex, System Shock/Bioshock and others that have substantial single player/story heavy campaigns.

Halo's story, albeit difficult to follow because of a combination of low dialogue volume and the plot that throws you into the middle of it a little, but the scale of the world makes it actually quite deep.

Oh also, Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite. C'mon TC, are you even trying?

If the game was more into the SP then I like to know why I'm blowing stuff up and being awesome...but gameplay counts for more.

If it was more MP like Battlefield then I don't give a damn about the campaing. If your main selling point is MP then use your budget on that and add smart A.I for offline play.

The main indications of quality for me in FPS are good graphics, smooth animation, incentives for accuracy while shooting (no spray n pray) I'm not going to say that I don't care about story but I certainly don't give a shit about good "writing", I only care about narratives that create interesting scenarios with freedom for the artists to create something visually appealing.

i mostly don't.

i read a lot so i get my narrative fix in that way and games are so far behind in putting out a narrative that i mostly just ignore the crappy story and get on with the face shooting.

every once in awhile something comes along and has a decent little story to tell and i consider it a bonus.

To some extent, I do care about story in FPS. Killzone 2 was an example where I thought the story was really bad, and it did feel like a negative. Good stories can add to a FPS.

That has always been frustrating for me, although the Halos have always drawn me in more than Killzone 2 did.

Bioshock Infinite had a pretty good story. It was a very good game in general, and the thing I liked most about it was the Elizabeth character.

Any game needs to have some sort of narrative to at least move it along and keep you engaged.

Good narratives transform good games into great ones.

I don't care about story in a video game in general. It's just a bonus if it's good and doesn't interfere with gameplay too much.

Story is pretty much completely inessential

Good gameplay+good story= good game

Good gameplay+bad story= good game

Bad gameplay+good story= bad game

Bad gameplay+bad story= bad game

If the gameplay isn't good, there's no incentive for the player to continue. It's what keeps a player engaged

*clap clap clap, I agree to some extend. Some games with very good story, but have quite simple gameplay, the game is still considered decent imo, eg: to the moon.
