I tend to buy just about any game I want at launch, but almost always at a deal. I never buy for $59.99. I get deals through Gamer's Club or other promos. Also, since I've started gaming more on PC, I've been able to find sites that sell the games at a good price early on. What about you, SW? Do you take the plunge right away?

Very rarely, if it's a game I'm really hyped for I will, but usually I wait for a good price drop. There's only like 3 games I'm buying at launch this year. And I'm looking forward to playing so much more, just gonna wait for the price to fall. Game prices go down so quick it almost never feels worth buying at full price.

Almost always. Rarely do I buy games much after launch. Recently I bought games like Batman Arkham Knight (PS4) and Fantasia that I was in the fence for, but the deals were too good. Usually if I want a game I get it on day one. And then put it right in the backlog.

Otherwise,I never do

Rarely. Since I graduated college and started working fulltime, day one purchases have been more frequent but I still don't do them too often. These are the only games I've ever gotten on release day.

StarFox Command
Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Mario Kart 8
Pokemon AlphaSapphire
Xenoblade Chronicles X

I think the last game I bought at launch (and pre-ordered at that) was Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition on PC.

I laugh at people who complain about the price of games at launch. Just imagine if you didn't have enough time to even play one every couple months. Suck it up buttercup.

Most games I really want to play I'll buy at launch. If I'm on the fence I wait for a game to hit the bargain bin.

Almost never. But if I know I will like a game and it has a watch bonus (such as zero time dilemma), I sure preorder it for day one.

I do pre-order games that I feel are worth $60 for and I expect to be very good. Games like Witcher 3, Forza 6, Bloodborne, RotTR, Fallout 4, Uncharted Collection, etc.. were all worth full price for me. Other games like Evolved, The Order 1886, SW: Battlefront, Project Cars, Madden 2015, etc... are not worth the full price to me. Games not worth a pre-order I'll usually get in the bargain bin or on EBay for 1/2 the price or less.

On occasion. Games I've been anticipating for a good while I'll get day one. Those games I tend to get special editions of. Almost everything else I'll wait for price drops.

I will buy Nintendo games day one. Worth it. Big PS4 releases go on sale so fast that 59.99 shouldn't even be msrp. Msrp ought to be $39.99. That is the most popular price very shortly after release.

PC games believe it or not I get them before they come out and don't pay a dime. Lol

I used to purchase games at launch all the time, but in the recent years I've cut back on my spending because my time with video games has decreased. Now, I usually only purchase games at launch that I'm greatly anticipating.

Super rarely since the prices skyrocketed. If they ever go back down, I might be more inclined to do it more.

Rarely. The last game was Fallout 4.

In general, I only buy games that I am reasonably confident in, and from developers I trust, at launch.

Rarely. If I do, it's likely a Nintendo game. Their games are pretty much always good, and they also never drop in price, so I might as well get them day 1 if I really want to play them. New Zeldas and Marios has to be played day 1..

When both these criteria are met- a) I really, really, really want the game and c) I have money.

This year, for example, I plan on buying the following games at launch-

  • Fire Emblem: Fates (already pre-ordered)
  • Uncharted 4
  • Horizon: Zero Dawn
  • Persona 5
  • The Legend of Zelda Wii U
  • Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
  • Mass Effect: Andromeda (but there's every chance that this doesn't even launch this year)

Only my three favourite franchises get the "guaranteed launch purchase" treatment. And that's a mainline Mario, Zelda, or Metroid game.

I might buy other games on launch, but it's no guarantee.

Very rarely. Titanfall taught me everything I needed to know about buying day 1 at full price based on hype. On PC I've found $30 is the sweet spot since you still get it during it's first year, but it offers a more robust feature set and some of the bugs are ironed out by that time.

Just depends. If its a game I'm really looking forward to, I'll get it at launch. Honestly, being an adult, I have a lot less time to play, so I almost always have a backlog and I just wait and get a game cheaper down the road.

Because of the free credits you could get from things like Xbox Rewards and Bing Rewards, I've bought a bunch of games at launch digitally and when I say launch, I really mean it's at exactly when the game releases right on the dot. Since you're able to pre-load, do a quick update and you're set to play instantly without waiting in those midnight events. Also they have stores like BestBuy which have this thing called GCU which discounts games plus you get gift cards for pre-orders and such. And Amazon recently giving Prime members a 20% off pre-orders as well, digital and disc games. I haven't paid in full for games using my own money so far this gen because of these ways to get free credits.

Only if it's a game I really want, and I'm actually going to have time to get into it straight away. Otherwise, it's incredibly stupid to buy a videogame on day 1 only to let it sit there.

I would estimate I average about 3 times per year buying a game day 1. Otherwise I have a backlog of games that I usually get through steam sales or through black friday type deals. I don't even keep up with what I buy, so that's why it is stupid for me to buy things day 1.

Rarely. Only games I would consider on Day 1 would be Nintendo games. That's only because they never seem to go down in price, and often times, they go out of print making them go for way more than the msrp later on down the road.
