So, I was waiting for AMD's supposedly big announcement last month for their upcoming R9 3XX series GPU release at GDC last month but instead all I got was some VR technology coming out AMD called Liquid VR. Instead of releasing new GPUs, AMD decided to be an idiot or lazy (or both) and decided not to release their GPUs. Frankly, I have zero interest in AMD's new tech. I think AMD is wasting their time and money when they could be using that engineering resources to bring GPUs to market much faster. Why? Because I think VR's are going to be a very, very niche product. They could bring new tech later on. Certainly not now when products hasn't even hit the market. Aside, from my rant, it got me thinking. How many people will actually BUY a VR Headset withing the next 5 - 10 years. Is this technology going to be viable enough to becoming mainstream withing the next 5 - 10 years? I just think it takes away from playing games on your PC screen or having the atmosphere of playing games on the big screen with your friends over (like I have with my PC hooked up to my 60" Plasma).

So, what are you guys thoughts? How many of you will actually buy a VR headset?

Money is already set aside. But the VR wars are gonna be brutal, still need the software end of the things to persuade me it's a worthy investment.

Unless it vastly improves the gameplay of Smash, Mario Kart, or Pokemon, I really don't care about VR.

Thats if it like $100... if its $200, nope.

I'll definitely get one for PC yes. As long as the games support it of course (mod support will do if it's solid).

I have zero interest in the next decade to purchase goggles to strap to my face.

I feel zero excitement and I know the genres are limited for this tech (first person view).

There's really no point to these VR headsets. At least not for the genres I like to play.

Not interested in the VR headsets, slightly interested in MS AR Hololens but I know it will be expensive and don't know if it will be worth it or enhance my experience so for now just keeping and eye out on it all.

Both the cost to get the most out of it and the need for tailored gaming experiences, means I am unlikely to jump on board. I don't see where the game support will come from, sure any game could work on it but that will just be the equivalent of a big TV on your face. I have no interest in that.

I think that watching TV on more or less the same kind of set that our grandparents had is lame. Sure, 1080p is nice and 4K is pretty, but it's still the same static flat screen at the end of the day. It's time for something new. I am all in on VR as both a gaming format and for entertainment. The time has come.

Meh. Someone will put a forward facing camera on a VR helmet from a cell phone and it will be game over for hololens. That tech is just far too easy to replace.

I may pick up a VR headset for the PS5 (or whatever the hell MS calls their next apology-box), but I haven't heard shit on price and the PS4 already struggles to output 1080p 60fps.

I don't really care about the framerate as along as it's stable, but I don't want to be staring at jaggies that are an inch away from my eyeball.

I think console VR tech really needs about 1 more generation to really deliver the goods.

Even without VR that binaural stuff sounds incredible in games when done intelligently. Bit like 3DS 3D effects can be great in spots.

I don't want to play a game with a helmet on...

Will flop just like 3D flopped, they are only aiming this at 10% of the market that have more money than sense.

In five years I'd imagine I'll have purchased more than one headset unless the whole market implodes into oblivion.

The first gen headsets look very capable, but I expect the tech to improve significantly in five years, and I'll upgrade to newer versions when I see a big enough improvement available.

I'm up in the air about getting either Oculus or Steams if it actually sees the light of day. Probably whichever comes first unless the choice becomes more obvious in time. I'm also waiting to see if Morpheus will work with Sony's Vita replacement. For long plane flights it would be great to VR out with a pair of noise dampening headphones.

@Shewgenja: Yeah I'm in much the same boat. I'm glad to see Valve getting in on the bandwagon, but I don't want to grab a headset until I see Final Oculus and compare. And from the way Oculus has been talking recently, that's not gonna be this year :(. Once the Rift and Vive are both out I'll snap one up almost immediately.

As for Morpheus, well let's just say it's gonna be a tough sell for me to grab a second headset so close to the beginning of VR when content will be slim. Now if it worked well with a handheld that could be a selling point, but while I love my Vita, I'm not so sure there's gonna be a Vita 2. :P

Yeah, I hear you there. Although, I guess there's always the hope that miniPCs take off and then you have the mobility factor with Oculus or Vive.

IMHO, people are really underestimating VR at this point in time. All Apple has to do is announce an iVR and this debate over it's relevance is doneskie.

@Shewgenja: Yeah, it seems people here underestimate VR, but SW is always a bit backwards and notoriously slow to get with the times. We still have people trying to argue digitally distributed games are automatically something less than a retail game years after Steam made retail an afterthought on PC.

Don't know, it's very early days. As far as I'm concerned, they're demo tech until they prove otherwise. First they have to come out, then I'll give them a year or two to see how they turn out and how they're supported.

After buying into the current gen with consoles, I'm never going to rush in and buy any hardware ever again.

Looks like Occulus will cost more than $200. That means a no go for me. I would rather spend that money on a new GPU.

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/oculus-rift-will-cost-more-than-200-how-much-would/1100-6427208/

Meanwhile Facebook purchase of Occulus looks to go beyond more than gaming according to Mark Zuckerberg. Makes sense, I could see it being in a wide variety of applications.
