Halo 5 Reaches $400 Million in Sales to Become Biggest Halo Launch Ever

"The game represents all the possibilities of Xbox One."

by on November 4, 2015

Microsoft on Wednesday announced that Halo 5: Guardians generated more than $400 million in global sales during its first week, meaning the Xbox One game is now the "biggest Halo launch" of all time. The figure includes sales of games and hardware, and drives Halo franchise lifetime revenue to over $5 billion.

By comparison, 2012's Halo 4 generated $220 million its its first 24 hours and around $300 million in its first week. A specific unit sales number for Halo 5 was not announced today.

In addition, Halo 5 has become the fastest-selling Xbox One exclusive ever, while it also enjoyed the highest launch-week attach rate for any first-party Xbox One game. On top of that, Halo 5 was the most-played Xbox One game on Xbox Live during its launch week.

Here's a breakdown of everything you get with the various editions of Black Ops 3 and the different bonuses retailers are offering.

"Fans have logged more than 21 million hours of total gameplay, including 12 million hours in campaign mode alone," Microsoft said in a statement. "The widely praised multiplayer modes have also led to nine million total hours played with nearly seven million multiplayer matches played across Arena and the all-new Warzone mode. In addition, Halo fans are taking to the new Requisition System in a big way, with over 45 million REQ Packs acquired, totaling more than 568 million REQ Cards."

Microsoft also announced that Halo 5 is the "best-selling digital game ever" through the Xbox Store during its launch week.

"The success of Halo 5: Guardians is a testament to the innovative work from the entire team at 343 Industries to bring this installment to Xbox One and the incredible community of fans who have come to love the story, characters and gameplay central to the franchise," Xbox boss Phil Spencer said in a statement. "The game represents all the possibilities of Xbox One and has earned its place as the anchor title in the greatest holiday games lineup in Xbox history."

400,000,000/60= 6.7 million copies sold?

Marking down for some of the special editions, it comes to roughly 5.5 or 6 million copies.

That's insane.

EDIT: It's been pointed out that this also includes hardware bundles. So accounting for that:

One Halo 5 hardware bundle is $350, and feasibly in the production pipeline, maybe 250,000 or 300,000 were made globally? Taking 350,000 as the number because it makes division easy, that's just 1000 copies, which is a statistical rounding error at this point.

The point is, it does appear as though the game sold quite a bit in its opening weeks- it sounds the sales came mostly from NA though.

EDIT 2: Goddammit, I forgot this game has microtransactions. That throws a wrench into any calculation.

This has to be because of the U.S. Halo 5's first week sales, Japan and UK combined were 157K. Splatoon did 162K in comparison. Halo isn't doing hot overseas so this means the game is HUGE in the states.

Did you miss this part "The figure includes sales of games and hardware"?

So no, Halo 5 didn't sell 5/6 or 7 million copies.

I thought that part referred to either Special Editions (which I accounted for), or bundles (which still count as unit sales)? What else would they mean?

haha you beat my thread by like 20 seconds.

@charizard1605- - it includes hardware sales though, so that figure wont work too well. though if you take away software sales from that, well then i guess it would make it a system seller

so basically TCHBO that is all.

haha, yep, I noticed that, sorry.

And yes, TCHBO but that happens on a hourly basis around here. :P

Wait. By hardware are they including consoles bundled with the game and Halo 5 controllers and stuff? That would be an incredibly silly way to spin the news.

Sublime PR. If Microsft's PR was a drink it would be a fine aged wine.

It is within it self an art form at this point. I could even imagine a painter producing this piece on canvas before being handed over to the marketing team.

Exquisite.

It did! And I will be more than happy to eat crow if I was wrong in the long run :-)

At the very least, we have this from Microsoft:

Microsoft also announced that Halo 5 is the "best-selling digital game ever" through the Xbox Store during its launch week.

So yeah, sounds like the game did have a high digital skew.

Has Microsoft always reported Halo sales by $$$ instead of by units sold? This seems incredibly weird.

This would obviously include special editions and console bundles. I wonder if they're also throwing in microtransactions into that figure.

They definitely did that for Halo 4.

But yes, I had forgotten about microtransactions...

Also begs the question of the special edition XO controllers were included in this too, since they were "Halo 5" themed.

One has to suspect that if Halo 5 actually is the best/fastest selling Halo game ever in terms of quantity, they'd be hyping THAT instead of monetary figures? Even if half of this $400,000,000 figure is from stand-alone game sales, that's 4 million copies in one week. That would be AMAZING, and it would be shocking if Microsoft didn't hype that shit out.

The thing is, they're not hyping that shit out. Should raise an eyebrow or two.

I really hope microtransactions aren't a big piece of those sales. That would just help to propel video games into the awful direction they are already going.

Also just a reminder; the $300 in the first week for Halo 4 [apparently] did NOT include hardware figures.

Granted, Halo 4 had a much larger install base, but it still strongly implies that Halo 4 actually sold more game copies.

I guess the Angry Joe effect didn't stop people from buying the game huh lol. The MP of Halo is great, definitely one of the best MP experience this year thus far.
