Still 28nm. What a crap.
We aren't going to see anything less than 28nm for a good while.

Yes because a graphic card is all you need to play PC games right
True but its a very easy upgrade for someone to experience games at a better than console level. No extra power requirements, small size.

@aroxx_ab: I didn't know consoles came with monitors and sound systems. A k/m combo pack is 10-15$. You don't need mechanical keyboards and that stuff

I know plenty of people, students especially, who have nothing but their cellphones and maybe a laptop.
Some don't even have the latter. They depend on campus computers to get their stuff done.
With AMD cards having 3gb since forever though... I'm surprised nvidia went with 2gb, if only for the sake of marketing.
But remember that AMD also went with 2gb and some compression technology talk with the r9 285. Nvidia is basically doing the same announcing 2gb but also talking about memory speed and their own compression tech.
Wondering when they're gonna announce the 8GB GTX 970 ....
I guess it's just supposed to be a great 1080p performer. 2GB is fine for that.
Exactly. I'm not sure why everyone is expecting record breaking performance out of a 179.00 card. Thats not how Nvidia works. A 970 is the sweet spot for PC gamers.
It's 179 $?
I just pulled it outta my ass. I'm guessing $179 - 209-
http://videocardz.com/54329/nvidia-geforce-gtx-960-confirmed-specifications-and-launch-date
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 is essentially a double GTX 750, or half GTX 980 if you wish. The GTX 960 is equipped with GM206 processor, which has 1024 CUDA cores. Card is featuring 2GB GDDR5 memory and 128-bit interface. Jen-Hsun told me the efficient memory clock is 9.3 GHz (yes, I’m serious). NVIDIA is now advertising memory clock speed after increasing it by 33% (the bandwidth is higher due to 3rd Gen. colour compression (delta compression) algorithm. Soon, the only real thing in NVIDIA materials will be the name of the card.
More inside.
Really NVIDIA? 2gb. Cmon son. I guess might have to go 970 unless a proper ti version gets announced sooner or latter with more memory. Eh, my 760 is still fine for the year anyway.
So how do you feel about this SW?
My R9-290s would be my last JEDEC GDDR5 based video card and I'm waiting for JEDEC HBM based solution.

I hope its half the price of the first one
This better be south of $200 otherwise a failure. 2gb and not only that but a 128bit wide bus ? I really dont see any reason other than power consumption anyone should get this over gtxx 760/770, r9 280/280x

GTX 960 is suppose to be nearly on par with 770, even with it's 128bit and if it is south of $200 then its a better option then 760 or 770 for the price. Nvidia's maxwell has their new compression methods saving memory bandwidth which is why its able to work with 128bit. Now alot of AA or resolutions above 1080 will become an issue for that 2gb and 128bit bus. But according to earlier leaks there is suppose to be different 960 models so we could see a 960ti which should nearly reach 780 levels if its on a 256bit bus whether or not it has 4gb is a mystery.
The 7970s in my gaming rig are over 3 years old and yet, still nothing worth of upgrading to.
These past years have been super slow progress. We need to move to smaller node ASAP.

well even so i cant get excited for a supposedly mid-range gpu that uses 2gb on a 128bit bus when a 280x most likely will be comparatively priced and is a 3gb card on a wider bus for similar performance ( and if i have to guess 280 prices will drop even more ). Besides nvidia hasnt revealed price yet but if its closer to 150 than 200 then yeah i guess it will be a good buy
I'm more eagerly though for a ti version and AMD's answer in the mid range section ( be it 370x, 380 )

Most of the 200 series are just rehashed versions of the 7000 series, The 280x is nothing more then a tweaked 7970ghz, also many 280x's have blackscreen and artifact issues. So have to choose carefully. But yeah if the 960 is below $200 it would be a great buy. If the 960ti comes with 4gb and 256bit bus and is ~250 ish that is still a good buy.
With the 300 series if they are truly going to be 20nm expect to pay a premium for the upper end models.
128bit????
console peasant card confirmed
It's not as bad as you think. This is taken from a review of the GM107 (GTX 750Ti GPU).
"While on the subject of performance efficiency, NVIDIA has also been working on memory efficiency too. From a performance perspective GDDR5 is very powerful, however it’s also very power hungry, especially in comparison to DDR3. With GM107 in particular being a 128-bit design that would need to compete with the likes of the 192-bit GK106, NVIDIA has massively increased the amount of L2 cache they use, from 256KB in GK107 to 2MB on GM107. This reduces the amount of traffic that needs to cross the memory bus, reducing both the power spent on the memory bus and the need for a larger memory bus altogether.." http://www.anandtech.com/show/7764/the-nvidia-geforce-gtx-750-ti-and-gtx-750-review-maxwell/3

I'm looking for a replacement for my 660 Ti but I don't think this is it.
Really wanted to go with Nvidia again, but it looks like ATI has more appealing mid-range offerings. Fucking Witcher 3 is driving me insane...
@clyde46As in, I'll probably just get a R9 280X instead.
Edit: I'm mainly worried about the 128 Bit bus. Like... wtf?

Because it doesn't fucking matter? This is a new chip compared to AMD's rehashed 7970's AKA the 280x. I think you are a moron to pass this card up if its priced at $200 for a card is more expensive and has less features.
Either way, I'm going to wait for benchmarks.
I can get a 280X for, like, 220€ today (never owned an XFX card, but I don't think it would matter).
Don't know the price of the 960 but I'm assuming it will be the same. 200 to 250 euros, depending on brand, which is what I'm willing to spend.

Still think you're stupid to even entertain the idea of buying a last gen card, hell its actually from two gens ago over something that is just coming to market.
I'll go for whichever gives me better performance. When you have a mid-range system, every frame counts.

Avoid XFX like the plague and also hope you know that 280x is nothing more then a tweaked 7970ghz, I would wait and see what what 960 series brings to the table.

Check out my post, above about the memory bus.
I'm more than confident the GTX 960 will easily run upcoming games, extremely well. The GTX 750Ti seems to perform very well on anything I throw at it and it's based on the same principles, the 960 is just much more.
Wait before you dismiss it. These Maxwell GPUs are designed to do a lot more with a lot less.

While AMD does dominate the 100 and 200 dollar brackets, do not get the r9 280x. R9 290 is just 20-40 dollars more.
I been talking about the gtx 960 weeks ago. The gtx 960 is a waste of money but there is a 960 ti variant coming. That will be a way better card if you decide to go with Nvidia.
The specs and performance of the gtx 960 were leaked weeks ago. Its pretty much a gtx 670 with lower power usage. If that is true, there is no way I can recommend the card unless its priced 150 dollars.
People have been complaining (including myself) that the gtx 960 should have been the gtx 950 and the gtx 960 ti should have been the current gtx 960.

The people who leaked the specs for NVIDIA also leaked the card's performance. If the performance is true, then you are getting around a gtx 670 in performance which is horrendous for the 200+ price tag. However, people are saying that NVIDIA has adjusted the cost because the feedback and the pricing of the gtx 960ti model. If the performance is true and you have a power supply to support it, then r9 280x is the better choice over the gtx 960. However, I think the r9 280x is pointless when the r9 290 is just 20-40 dollars more.
The 960ti is the card people should be looking at. It will be released fairly soon. Whether or not Nvidia prices it competitively is a whole other story.
