Grey Goo is inspired by classic RTS games and is created by developers of Command & Conquer. Grey Goo will feature story driven campaign that will progress the story through CGI Cutscenes. The game is scheduled to launch on January 23 for PC.

The name Grey Goo doesn't sound odd when you take into consideration that the game is about three races; Human(s), Beta(s) and Goo(s).

The third faction, the goo, is a really interesting concept for a traditional base building RTS.

Really looking forward to the RTS coming out this year. This genre didn't get enough love these past years :)

I was surprised to find that there will be a Blitzkrieg 3 this year, I loooooooooove Blitzkrieg 1&2.

Also, there is even a WWI RTS, very interesting.

This is what makes me laugh when console gamers say they have loads of games. Where they do get some, we get a 15 page list with options covering every conceivable genre. It's a good time to be a PC gamer :)

Hehe, indeed it is. Was meaning to get an PS4 and/or Xbone but seeing as how most games end up on PC too I won't get around to it for years.

But I do believe that consoles have been covering smaller genres more and more, especially with the advent of indie games on consoles. I've even seen RTS (RTT) done well on consoles in games like Patapon or Swords and Soldiers. That was nice to see.

It's just that ... a lot of smaller console games drown in the massive media hype that is created for games like Uncharted or Halo.

It's not that there aren't big hyped-up games on PC either, but I find PC gamers are more open to niches and a bit less prone to media hype.

I'm the exact opposite :p

Like I find Civilization games to be extremely interesting setting wise. But I'm not sure if they are for me as I prefer real time.

Like Age of Empires (1) and Rise of Nations tried to be the Civilization games of the RTS genre. And they are by far my favourite RTS games :D

Empire Earth 2 as well.

That game was glorious.

But honestly it's up to the game. I like both turn-based and real-time games, but it depends far more on the other elements of the game.

I just love base-building, and then destroying the world with my vast armies.

I know. I kind of talk in generalities. GTX 980 PC's with 16+ GB of RAM should be getting more attention. Don't shoot the messager, tell it to Chris Roberts, he agrees.

RTS is basically a genre that the big publishers declared dead. They like to declare a lot of genres dead, like horror games, because of their focus groups. Only for those genres to come around out of the indie or smaller publishers scenes and be popular.

No company would be willing to

a) take a risk in a genre that is not as popular as it once was and

b) not only take that risk, but take an even bigger risk by only targeting that game at the 0.0000000000000001% of PC RTS gamers that own a GTX 980 with 16GB of RAM.

Even Blizzard was not willing to take a risk with their graphics and aimed to reach as many systems as possible.

IMO Company of Heroes 2 is amazing looking RTS game. So if you want great graphics with some amazing attention to detail, check that game out.

Because graphics are everything right? Every gen PC gets benchmark games and better visuals. Nothing to worry about. Let's not derail the thread. People are excited about this game.

Yeah, that's the whole fun of the genre for me. Build your base, gather resources, make this gigantic upgraded army and then duke it out with somebody who did the same :P

I'm willing to try out more turn based games. As a lot of aspects are the same in both genres.

Didn't play much EE2 but the first one was a huge time sink for me. The concept of starting out in the stone age and working your way into the present and even the future was so much fun.

Never said that. Just think more games should use the beefy hardware people pay so much for instead of just porting console games over and adding a few lights and textures.

Most devs are greedy. It is easier for them to focus on lowest common denominator and then port it to PC with enhancements than the other way around. Still, as I said every gen PC gets benchmark games that sell a lot of GPUs; Half Life 2, FEAR, Company of Heroes, Crysis, Crysis Warhead, Witcher 2, battlefield 3, Shogun 2 etc. And right now there are already quite a few benchmark games in the works.

I don't know why people think that RTS is dying genre. It is yet another bullsh*t spread by so called journalists who said the same thing about PC Gaming. And new C&C was nothing but cash grab. It was F2P/P2W game. That said, I agree that EA ruined C&C franchise.

Why?

there were couple of balancing issues in the beta that just caused frustration. For example a human player could wall off their base and completely fill it with near endless turrets. This is something that could happen very VERY early in the game and it causes players to play the "sit and build massive army" approach every single game. units in the game IMO felt very slow in movement and the basic units in the game are near useless.

there were afew other issues with the beta that i cant recall at the moment, but givin they had months to go over the feedback i expect to see some changes.

I don't know if the Goo were part of the beta, but if they were, did you get a chance with them? The humans and Betas seem more traditional in their approach to RTS mechanics, so any flaws would seem to be easily remedied. The Goo present a much different approach to gameplay that may be harder to fine tune. While I haven't touched the beta, it just seems like to me that the Goo's mechanics are either going to really shine or fall flat.
