One of the biggest issues thatGears of War 2faced was the lack of dedicated servers. After launch, online play was quickly plagued by a flagrant host advantage and bothersome lag spikes, sometimes even to the point of un-playability. Epic Games looks to change this with the next iteration in theGearssaga.

According to the most recent edition of the Official Xbox Magazine, or OXM,Gears of War 3will feature dedicated servers that will eliminate the irritating host advantage while downplaying any other gameplay lag that players may have faced in the second iteration ofGears.

The August 2010 issue explained the extent of the overall reduction of online woes. "Expected dedicated servers that'll reduce the lag that plaguedGears 2down to practically zero."

Well, it's about time. Why haven't titan developers like Epic Games, Infinity Ward and Bungie utilized dedicated servers in the past? The technology is there, on any platform the developer chooses (just look atBad Company 2). Freezing the game and swapping hosts is great and all, but it isn't even a viable solution when the process sometimes takes five minutes and occasionally results in a dropped game. Titles likeModern Warfare 2tend to put so much focus onto multiplayer, yet the poor networking is so disorganized that it taints any competitive, or even casual experience.

The same article dared to ask the question: willGoW3feature an extensive pre-release multiplayer beta to work out the networking kinks and issues (a laHalo: Reach)? Although the magazine wasn't able to fudge an answer out of Epic, it's an interesting thought nonetheless.Modern Warfare 2had no public beta, which left network and balance issues abundant within the title.Halo: Reach, on the other hand, displayed new and old features within its beta, allowing Bungie to repair any underlying issues (there were many) with online multiplayer.

Dedicated servers and a strong widespread beta could result in one of the most refined multiplayer experiences of 2011.source:http://360.kombo.com/article.php?artid=19275

Oh, sorry if old guys. Just wanted to spread the news to more people.

They hinted at it. Then an article said no announcements yet. And now it's been truly confirmed.

Also, Halo:Reach's beta was kinda smooth, even for matchmaking.

Good that it will be even better for launch though!

Gears 2 was the biggest dissapointment this gen for me. Gears 1 is my most played shooter this gen so i was expecting big things from gears 2.

What they need to do is get rid of this crappy TrueSkill matchmaking thats infecting games. Its gutter trash and only makes games worse. The gears 1 system was 100x better.

All i'm saying is most PC features end up on consoles sooner or later. With the PC showing the way for all to follow. For example HD gaming, multiplayer, dedicated servers etc... Yet console only fanboys have no idea of this. Some still think PC cant do HD! On topic though, this is good. There is a reason why PC gamers have been harping on about the merits of dedicated servers vs p2p.

Well now you don't have to endure lag...either through dedicated servers, or through not playing.

Wow who cares, Gears has always sucked online, Gears 2 was probably the biggest failure of a successfull games online ever. Gears 3 even without lag will have lame unbalanced uninspired online.

I'd be fine without dedicated servers if every developer could just nail their netcode as well as Bungie does. Dedicated servers are a pain because if the host quits that's it, game over, whereas games like Halo will quickly choose a new host to keep the game going. Still, dedicated servers are definitely welcome seeing as Epic have shown twice now that they simply cannot do decent netcode.

Its funny becasue gears 2 is now playable and it plays fine for me the most lag i get is maybe 1 out of every ten matches and that is usually to someones bad host, but eh problem is taht it took 1 1/2 years to work out all the kinks. SO hopefully Epic does right and makes sure their game is poilished, i notice that he is ditching the whole slogan thing fo his game, last game was "bigger better more bad ass" now it "it will be the best most polished Gears fo war to date" which makes me think theya re actually trying to make this last installment amazing.

Sorry but i think your a bit confused! There is no single host on dedicated servers! Its actually a full server, dedicated to running the game. That is the advantage of dedicated servers, cos a host cannot quit and ruin the game for everyone else. That happens in P2P online games, which is most console online play. Also dedicated servers have less chance of lag.

That's a shame. More devs should step up to the plate and include dedicated servers - it really extends the longevity of the online portion (and as such, the consumer's willingness to pay for DLC - something you'd think devs would have realized by now).

Honestly I don't care if they have dedicated servers or not. The first gears played great even without it. Sure the host had a tiny advantage.. but big deal. As long as the gameplay is as smooth as the first and matchmaking isn't a pain in the ass like hte second, I couldn't care less if its dedicated or a player hosting.

I'm sure you'll get your bots. I don't expect Epic to drop features. They would much rather add them on.(ofcourse that would be using logic and reasoning and stuff, but I like to believe epic does things within reason :P )

Dedicated Servers are not so important, if the netcode is improved...

Heck, look at the Halo;Reach beta!

That was pretty smooth (for a Beta), and was comparable with dedicated servers, and verystreamlined.

If Epic can do a job like Bungie (And have a BETA!!!), then dedicated servers may not matter as much.
