For me I'd give a thumbs up to Dark Souls, Moonlight butterfly and Ash Lake were fantastic.

I specifically gave the OST's because they played a large part in making those levels as good as they are.

So what games this gen had good atmosphere in your opinion? Give specific examples please.

Both inFAMOUS. I actually felt like a super hero playing those games. Unlike the Batman games.

Satorl Marsh, the day to night transition in Xenoblade especially the first time you see it. I can't say I've ever been that blown away. Jeez that was something special, the art, the music, the high level monsters coming out. Everything was unbelievably good. Skytown Elisia in Metroid Prime 3 was also just unbelievable. Perhaps an odd choice but I found most of Sonic Generations levels to have great atmosphere, especially the retro levels. Fantastic stuff.

I remember when I first entered the marsh and was disgusted about entering another bland looking swamp, then night came... :) these are the reasons why this game is a masterpiece.

Limbo. Really the only good thing about the game. Metro 2033's level where you just walk along the tunnel and see the ghosts. All of Legend of Grimlock. I got so sucked into the game that I beat it in like 4 days or something.

Game literally restored my faith in swamp environments. That is damn well the best swamp environment I have ever seen period. I was in awe at that transition. Xenoblade had problems but atmosphere was definitely not one.

Metro 2033, BioShock 1&2, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, New Vegas, Demon's Souls (Boletarian Palace to be specific), Dark Souls, FEAR, Dishonored, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, STALKER series, Amnesia, and tons of others that didn't immediately pop into my head.

Dark Souls - Darkroot Garden. That place is spooky first time through. Also the DLC areas are very atmospheric.

Bioshock Infinite - The entire opening and Going through the carnival at the start.

Metro 2033 - The Ghosts level

STALKER - Heading underground is scary as hell

Amnesia - The place with the pile of dead bodies that's all kind of tiled like a bathroom

The Witcher 2 - Flotsam is amazing

God of War III - The opening

Uncharted 2 - The snowy areas

I have bad memories of that place and that game. Later on when you get the power weapons it gets less scary, but the opening several hours is just nail-biting to the extreme.

Bioshock Infinite, the first 20 minutes, where you are introduced to Columbia and the people living there.

Dark Souls, pretty much the entire game, but if i had to choose a particular place i would have to say Anor Lond, while it was a pretty empty place i really felt the desolation and sadness in the world.

Xenoblade Chronicles, yes, Satorl Marsh was impressive...but Bioni's Leg had the most impact on me because the world felt so big, i was kind of intimidated by that view.

Alice Madness Returns, the game was only ok, but the art was pretty impressive, the scenery truly has life on its own.

Demon's Souls, Xenoblade, Prime 3, Dark Arisen. Dark Arisen especially. One of the main things Dragon's Dogma vanilla lacked was atmosphere (besides the endgame going to face the dragon), but Dark Arisen makes up for that in spades - The music is great, monsters are strong and challenging, bitterblack aisle is well detailed and really gives off the impression that this wont be an easy ride. It basically channeled its inner Souls game and delivered in spades imo.

The whole game pretty much does that. Man, Valek Mountain the first time was some epic shit. I discovered it and then the blizzard hit, holy cow was that awesome. And at night, possibly even nicer looking than Satorl.

Dead Space 1 and 2 (I suppose 3 as well, but it's environment was a lot more boring).

Skyrim (say what you will about the game itself, but the world was gorgeous).

Grand Theft Auto IV (soon to be bested by 5 by probably miles, but GTAIV contains easily, to this day, the most believable city I've seen in a game).

Red Dead Redemption (dat sky)

The Mass Effect series (once again, say what you will, but I felt as though I was part of it's world while playing, the graphics and lore combined to create impeccable atmosphere here)

The Witcher 2 (probably the best this gen for me).

This gen? I'd say Demon's Souls. The atmosphere was incredible in that game. Latria (world 3) especially.

I'd say Lords of Shadow. Through out the game it never broke the artistic level design.

When it comes out i would probably say the same for it's sequel

So. Much. Nostalgia.

The Saboteur from its music to the world changing from black and white into color as you liberate Paris.

Feeling good.

Assassin's Creed II nailed it when it comes to atmosphere running across Venice rooftops with that beautiful soundtrack just before diving into the water.

RDR vast open world along with suberb voice acting made you feel like you truly were in a western.

That was the worst part of the game.

Anyway I'd say Mafia II, Fallout 3, Oblivion, Arkham Asylum, MGS4 Shadow Moses, Bioshock 1.

I really like the intro scenes in RDR that also utilized tutorials. Like the mine shaft/gatling gun retrieval.

UC2's heaist scene was amazing to me.

I thought Arkham Aslyum's art direction led for incredible mood.

good picks, lets add cyrostasis, CoH, Oblivion and FO3, Super mario galaxy, Sleeping dogs, Batman Archam Asylum/city, Hard Reset, Mafia 2 and singularity to the list.

(guessing this was atmospheric, NOT scary, right?)
