There was one, it was a head of its time, as well as our bandwidths - so it has issues. Planetside 2 looks to come in with the right timing, and with a--now--working service model to boot.

The reason it isn't on PS3 is because of the massive player counts and map scale. There just isn't enough memory. Additionally, the guns and vehicles are balanced around mouse precision. They'd bring it to PS3 if they could but it's too advanced of a game all around. You guys have MAG, which is the best approximation of the Planetside experience that can run on console hardware.
