The PlayStation 2 may have won that gen - and objectively, I defy anyone to claim that the PS2 wasn't the best games platform of that era - but that was a great generation for gaming, because in spite of the PS2's absolute domination, there were three other game consoles that were absolutely amazing, well made and powerful, and in some cases, catered to gamers far better than the PS2 ever did.

The question is, which one of them do you think was the best?

Personally, while I adored all three of these machines and appreciated what they brought to the table, I did have my favorites here, with the top one in the running for my favorite console of all time:

  1. Gamecube (Metroid Prime, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Mario Kart Double Dash, Resident Evil 4)
  2. Xbox (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Halo 2, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Fable, Project Gotham Racing)
  3. Dreamcast (Resident Evil Code Veronica, Shenmue, SoulCalibur, Crazy Taxi)

The DC was a joke. The Cube had some great Nintendo games, but the Xbox did online the right way and had the best third party support, so the Xbox was the best.

I had more fun with Smash Melee than I did Halo that gen, that switched around though last gen. So I'll go with GC. Plus it had Resi 4.

It's just a shame it has the worst Zelda, Mario, and Kart titles on it, because except for Zelda you only got one of each on it.

Gamecube greater than DVD player Playstation 2. That was only reason anyone ever bought PS2, it was cheapest available system and it was cheaper than a dvd player, thats why i bought it even though i had a Gamecube and Dreamcast already. But i still enjoyed my Gamecube way more than my PS2, playing Soul Caliber, Smash Bros, Metroid, Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil games, Skies of Arcadia, Baten Kaitos series, Fire Emblem, Tales of Symphonia and my Zoids game, omg it was heaven.

Once Xbox graduated from the duke, it was easily the best console.

DC may be the only system I care for less than GC.

Gave us some of the best games ever, like: Metroid Prime, Shenmue, Shadow of the Colossus, Resident Evil 4, Ninja Gaiden Black, Paper Mario TTYD, KOTOR, Dragon Quest VIII, Panzer Dragoon Orta, GTA San Andreas & Vice City, Okami, SMT Nocturne, Skies of Arcadia, Tales of Symphonia & the Abyss. Just to name a few.

They all had great games but Xbox had the best graphics. Splinter Cell, DOA, Ninja Gaiden, Halo 1+2, Project Gotham Racing, Rallysport, Riddick, Forza.

All these without DLC or microtransactions. Or touch controls.

Plus, the GameBoy Advance was really great. Not phenomenal, but great.

Listen, I could have listed Metroid Prime alone and it would have beaten all of those games. Seriously?

Did the retro games forum come back for nothing?

Anyway, GameCube... and I'm going as far and say I still prefer that over the PS2. Why? Well, at least the GC wasn't behind in the local multiplayer department (two controller ports that can only be added on if you pay for a dated multitap, and NO PS2 revision EVER adding them on like they did online? How the hell is that acceptable after four controller ports we're popularized thanks to the N64's popularity with Smash/Goldeneye/etc) and it's exclusives department interest me more.

@nintendoboy16: But Xbox had Halo 2, and flying the banshee and destroying the Covenant on Legendary was just so epic. Rogue Leader was fantastic, but always being confined to your spaceship (except when in the hangar) seemed a tad limiting in comparison. But then again Apples and Oranges. I owned PS2, GC, DC and Xbox and loved them all dearly and equally.

For me: XB>GC>DC

The Xbox IMO was the runner up to the PS2, though it had some issues that halted it success then rather than a lack of interest. PS2 had more games, but Xbox had vastly superior ports of those games. What hurt it's long term viability most was Nvidia refusing to sell Microsoft their GPU cheaper and in the end halting price reduction and market competitiveness, resulting in both a premature ending to Xbox production and the early release of the Xbox 360, which actually turned out to be a benefit in the end in helping Microsoft achieve a foot in the market in the 7th gen.

GameCube was a good console, regardless of how I rank it it's worth noting that Nintendo had some good first party games for it, and a respectable amount of third party support, and unlike the competition it all fit in a nice tight package, wasn't a fan of the controller though.

I almost forget that the Dreamast was even a 6th gen console of any relevance given how it basically drove Sega into third party support for everyone else. STILL people are making games for the thing, so even though it seemed like the system died long ago there's still some things being made for those who still have them. I'm not too torn up for it being Sega's last console as my love for Sega died with the Saturn.

All around I'd say the Gamecube. Dreamcast controller is junk. Sonic Adventure is trash. A lot of mediocre stuff on Dreamcast get overrated, today. Most likely prefer it over Xbox I think but Gamecube is the most well rounded and has the best games in each genre, save for fighting games.

Have to go with Xbox (I still think it was one of the most underrated consoles released). I loved it.

Although I have some great memories playing Gamecube as well... my first Nintendo console, and easily my favourite since.

Xbox is definitely the most underrated of the bunch. The games I see people mostly mention are halo and games that were also on PC. Nothing wrong with that there are great games like Crimson skies, fable and jade empire but there are some amazing gems on xbox if you dig deeper.

I think the Xbox is underappreciated for the gems it had, but I'm taking the Cube.

-Metroid Prime 1 and 2 are my favorite first person shooters at this point.
-Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door is terrific
-Rogue Leader is terrific
-Melee is the best Smash Bros game and a damn good fighting game to boot
-The best racing game of that gen in FZero GX
-Eternal Darkness is an awesome horror game
-Resident Evil Remake is a gold standard for remakes
-Mario Kart Double Dash is actually probably the last time I liked Mario Kart
-Path of Radiance is probably on a short list for my favorite Fire Emblem game
-And while I don't care for Sunshine and Wind Waker isn't good, but Twilight Princess had its moments for a 3D Zelda game.

And while the multiplats can go back and forth (XBL had huge advantages thanks to actual online play), but The Xbox didn't get Killer 7, or Viewtiful Joe, or fucking Resident Evil 4.

The Dreamcast is like cool in how strong of a start it had, but a lot of its games I give no fucks for. I love Ninja Gaiden Black, and I had blast on Halo 2. I don't like them enough to overrule the part where Cube had Resident Evil 4 and Metroid Prime.

My favorite PS2 game is probably Socom 2 and GTA games. I didn't own a GameCube until 2011 when I was deployed to Afghanistan I bought one and played all the RE games. That's all I ever played from GC. I had an Xbox but didn't care for it, mostly played Rainbow 6, not sure what else. Now the Dreamcast...Shenmue, Shenmue, Shenmue...it had tons of other great games too. I'm surprised at the lack of respect for the Dreamcast shown in here. Very disappointing.
