Poll Frame rate or Resolution? (140 votes)

I prefer higher fps 70%
I prefer higher resolution 6%
Depends... 24%

This is not meant to be a troll topic or whatever. I'm curious to know if gamers, especially console gamers, prefer fps over resolution or vice versa and why.

As you know, devs are trying to get 30fps and 1080p on consoles, which i believe is wrong, they should focus more on fps because that shapes the gameplay, but i don't blame them because they're doing what gamers like and prefer ...

Personally, i tweak the hell outta my options to get a solid 60fps and i don't care if a Nvidia fog or sth is turned off ...because experience matters more....i'd rather play on 1080p 60fps than 2K 30fps so my vote goes to " i prefer higher fps"

Framerate.

Bad framerate is annoying. A lower resolution isn't.

fps....unless I want to experience 4K on my PC, then I will allow 30fps for a minute ( until I get a better card that can offer 4K at 60fps...whatever card that may be )

Good framerate and resolution and graphical effects, thanks.

All of which the Xbone cannot deliver.

Definitely Framerate. I'd sacrifice alot of res/fidelity if there was a 60FPS option in console games.

For PC, since I'm happy with 60FPS and 1080p, 144FPS seems more appealing of a luxury than 4k.

Gotta agree with the framerate, that smooth gameplay is important.

Depends, when I'm playing games liek Red Orchestra 2 (I had back then problems with my fps) then I pick resolution over it. You need to see the enemies at a distance.

Frame rate is far more important than resolution or bells and whistles. Having all of them is better but frame rates should be the highest priority.

Because the Potatobox would struggle to hit 60fps even at 720p.

Dunno about the PS4, would probably do a better job of it, marginally.

On a PC I downgrade graphic quality before sacrificing either. On a console it depends on the game. Some games, like the Uncharted series, really thrive off of the graphics and the quality of the title would be less if they dropped the resolution to maintain a higher framerate. For something like Halo or CoD, the 60fps has a direct impact on how the game plays and should take priority. Same with Forza. I'll take a lower resolution to keep that framerate high.

Depends on the type of game it is. For a lot of games, having a high frame-rate isn't necessary and I'd prefer maximum eye-candy instead.

Not that I prefer a higher frame rate, mainly just a stable one, but yeah, bigger concern over mine than resolution most times.

Bad frame rate can effect the game play and slow it down to a crawl, bad resolution just looks bad but doesn't effect the fun factor of the game.

About Uncharted, it'd be hell a lot better if it was 60fps ...because you move a lot and it's heavily action-oriented so you may not even notice lower res ...and in multiplayer it MUST be 60fps no matter the game imo

Frame rate or resolution is the wrong question.

If devs aimed for 60FPS for some of their projects they would have to scale back more than just graphics to achieve it. The frame rate and gameplay are a compromise in most cases, not the resolution.

We all know the consoles for the most part are CPU limited, so if your game will only put out 45FPS with all the AI and other scripts then it makes sense to use the power of the GPU and get higher res textures and more effects to use the other 10FPS the graphics card has spare and lock it to 30FPS.

So I say it all depends on the game, if the AI and whatnot is not important to a game but reaction time is (FPS. Racing) then 60FPS should be the target and the resolution should not actually matter so it should be both 60FPS and 1080p, there is no reason for a compromise. For everything else fine 30 is good enough for a lot of game especially third person games, 60 would be better.

As for dropping the resolution, I don't think that should ever be done if you properly optimise the game engine, you are better off dropping the draw distance or turning some of the effects off or down for problematic areas.

Frame rate. As long as a game runs smoothly, I usually don't care what it looks like (obviously it's good if it looks nice but it's not a requirement). Frame rate is pretty crucial to most games, whereas a game with even rudimentary graphics can still be really great.

I have both because my PC is capable. Framerate is more important though and I would sacrifice visuals to achieve a solid 60+ fps.

Just asked a question ...no need to be paranoid.

With most of the genres you mentioned higher fps can offer better experience tho...

Depends on the game. For example, if I'm playing Civilization, why would I give a crap about frame rate? If I'm playing a racing sim, or god forbid a FPS, I'm more concerned with frame rate.

In general I'll go for a higher frame rate. In some games, however, I think as long as I'm getting over 30 I'd rather the higher res. Eye candy like RISE doesn't require me to have great reflexes and as many images as possible per second, so why not enjoy extra resolution to make it look crispy af?

Of course I'd never play Rocket League at 30 fps either just to get a higher res. Depends on the game.

Still; voted for fps.

I'll bet 1 Million dollars most people will say Framerate but we'll get nothing but topics on why a game looks like crap due to lower resolutions. Works 60 percent of the time every time.
