End of an Era: Nintendo DS Officially Being Discontinued Worldwide

The greatest handheld ever sold, arguably the best system of last generation, and indeed, all time... is being discontinued. Nine years after it first hit the market, Nintendo revealed via its financial that the handheld is now being discontinued, after the most successful run for any game console in history. At the end of its lifespan, the Nintendo DS stood at 153.87 million units sold worldwide. Its total software sales worldwide were 933.69 million units, leading to the highest attach rate for any handheld game system in history.

And now, a look at the evolution of the Nintendo DS hardware over the years:

I love my DS Lite. Although I have to say its screens do look rather small now that I've got my 3DS XL :P

Some of my favorite games from last gen were on that system, and I didn't even own one.  Always played my brothers.  I'll have to pick one up now to see what I missed out on.  I've only played like 10 DS games, and absolutely loved about half of them.

The PS2 and the NDS are the holy duology of gaming. The greatest gaming systems ever created by man.

I think it would still be selling if they wouldn't drop it.

It was a good system but I missed the analog stick and texture filtering.

Controlling some games with the touch-screen was a pain and the graphics were a little too pixelated.

The double screen didn't impress me either but the system made-up with a stellar line-up of games.

Awesome little system, and I'm glad it did well :) But imo the 3DS will surpass it in terms of my personal enjoyment. And who knows, the 3DS might get close to those sales too. Currently it's at 31 million after 2 years, which is almost the same as the DS. I think the DS had around 35 mil at this point. So it's a possibility for the 3DS to match it.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...it's a sad day for gaming. The DS was a beast. Still play mine from time to time.

There's no never in this case, the fact the PS2 did it means that's it's possible for another console to do what it did or even surpass it. Making an absolute blanket statement like nothing will achieve what the DS/PS2 has done is silly at best.
