As PC gaming continues its long death spiral, it has been announced that the DotA 2 tournament The International 2015 will have the largest prize pool in esports history (surpassing last years International). It currently sits at $11.6 Million and counting. The International 2015 surpassed the previous prize pool in half the time, and will continue to grow until with Valve extending stretch goals out to $15 Million

The prize pool for The International, Valve's upcoming Dota 2 world championship tournament, is over $11.6 million dollars and counting – the biggest sum yet for any eSports competition, ever.

This is already well beyond last year's $10.9 million, which current Dota 2 players surpassed in half the time according to the game's prize pool tracking charts.

For those unfamiliar with Dota 2, the cash is coming from purchases of The Compendium, an upgradeable digital book that includes tickets to the tournament, rewards, challenges, cosmetic items, and more.

A quarter of The Compendium's sales goes towards the prize pool, which you can track on the official website for The International 2015.

The Tournament

Obviously this means PC gaming is the most hardcore! Will MOBAs and esports ever find similar success on consoles?

90% of E-sports and regular competitive gaming is on PC. Consoles stick with the movie games and racers.

I feel that e-sports and mobas are an entirely different beast to traditional PC gaming. There is a huge disconnect between moba players and non-moba players.

Playing dota 2 feels more like a sport. Purely competitive, emotionally intense, somewhat masochistic. Playing DOTA 2 for a while, then playing GTA V feels like switching platforms/mindset.

As bad as everything he's ever done! (I don't get how people didn't see the "twist" beating them round the face in sixth sense)

Also the last airbender is a better movie than MGS, COME AT ME SW!

I think "teach" is a bit of a reach, but i do remember what EA did with medal of honor. That game was so bias towards the US army that it affected gameplay.

Yeah, I mean when I first played the game online I got a lot of hate from tough guy nerds just because I died once and did one little mistake then I get blamed for the match loss. Like hell, I played TF2 and CS but I never once got blamed entirely for the team's loss or got shit talked that much when I played Dota. I'm not saying TF2 and CS have great communities, they don't but they're not as terrible as the Dota community.

@CountBleck12:

The Dota 2 community isn't as cancerous if you "git gud" and raise your MMR past a certain point. eventually people become a lot more supportive of you and objective in winning matches. That, or they're calm enough to not bad mouth you over a game.

However, that's only if you can play the game through all the hypocritical verbal beatdowns from all the pseudo-elitists down in wood league. If you're really that new to the game, and they're playing with you. It means that they're not very good in the first place.

I really wouldn't recommend Dota 2 to anyone who didn't play allstars back in WC3. Try an RTS, they're a lot better.

i think its safe to say all game's tied to E-sports are gonna have some level of toxicity. i've seen people kicked from games in counter strike because a player couldn't win a 3v1 clutch. Alot of players take the games too seriously and forget to have fun.

Starcraft 2's community isn't that bad though even on team matches. Same goes for Company of Heroes 2 but it isn't tied to e-sports.

I'd have to say Dota 2's community is five notches below every other gaming community on the internet. It's difficult to get through a single match without people on my team picking fights with eachother and making whoever is the least skilled feel bad. There are very few games out there like that. Usually the atmosphere in most games is just to play together and have fun - which is absolutely not the case here.

That's unfortunate. I have over 1700 matches played and ones where that happens is uncommon now but that might be because I get placed in High-Very High matches more often than not. The trolls don't seem to show up in those brackets. I wish there was some objective data because it would be really neat to see.

lower brackets tend to flame in a more generalized manner. they don't understand the game enough to say why they're losing (hence lowbar insults and flaming) while better players understand that flaming can put someone on tilt or they may recognize they have the advantage later on and can still win in a losing game. plus I feel like after enough matches there is a definite maturity block that prevents people from isolating logical decision making and improving at the game.
