My friends, modern day console gaming, does "balance" really matter all that much? Is this much more mechanically important for pc games? It seems much of console gaming now, are movie games in which the refinement of the mechanics aren't very important.

Outside of titles such as Street Fighter, does it really matter all that much? In pc gaming (Starcraft II/MOBA/CIV) many, many games balance is super important. So much so Starcraft has become a modern day chess.

Balance is needed in every game, however most games don't get that balance and are thus broken in my eyes.

It seems with Blizzard, pc has the most mechanically sound developer humanity has ever known. I suppose that's part of the longevity. While most console titles are forgotten about relativity quickly once the media buzz goes.

No evidence of rampant console games with bad balancing?

No examples?

Just conjecture?

If you're going to use Blizzard as as example of PC gaming longevity I'm going to use Super Metroid as an example of console longevity.

Using the best possible example is sort of pointless, why not use Big Rigs?

But no one plays that anymore. Millions play World Of Warcraft almost 10 years on. Millions play Starcraft more than ten years on.9 years after release Diablo 2 was still a top 10 seller list. My friend, this isn't a comparison, it's a homicide.

Why the **** would balance matter in a "movie game"? You don't even make sense half the time.

For multiplayer it's ALWAYS important no matter how "hardcore" and "complex" the game is.

Balance matters in every game with a competitive mode.

Does it matter in terms of success? no, not necessarily. You can market "crazy shit, whiz bang fun" much better than balance.

Does it matter in terms of critical reception? no when the hell has it ever come off like game critics give 2 shits about depth and nuance? much less balance?

That said I do think games that have stood the test of time tend to be the stuff that took care of business where it mattered: game design. Balance is a part of that. It's also something extremely difficult to achieve.

Has atrocious balance.

There is an entire forum dedicated to creating tiers to separate the broken mother fuckers from the status quo. That's not balance. Pokemon's competitive side has many strengths, and a lot of it revolves around how deep it is. But balance? lolno.

It being on a console or PC makes no difference. All multiplayer games need to be balanced. But this is a troll thread, so w/e.

No it certainly does not matter, the Biggest offender of this Power Fantasy Trend is Bioshock Infinite ! Damn I hate this game !

Everybody knows how I feel about RPGs so theres no need to get into that now.

Fighting Games are pretty much the only genre were balance is still important.

However its a dickmove trying to blame consoles for this. PC has its fair share of unbalanced crap.

It's not like balance is inherent to PC games. Look at WoW and League of Legends and you have two shitshows run by developers who are utterly incapable of class/champion balance.

Pc games are the games generally released unfinished. It wasn't until more recently that consoles started having these issues. Plus the definition of balance is Nintendo.

Yep, Fighting Games are the last true bastion of balance but even that might change because lets be honest, RPG Elements are everywhere ! 90% of them want you level up or upgrade constantly without the slightest care of what it does to the game's balance.

who are the genuinely unique, interesting, and new up and coming users?

i'll start: protossx.
